She notes that her family always had visitors, for meals or to stay. Jean describes how her mother maintained a kitchen garden and domestic livestock, and what her mother did with the surplus. She talks about attending Gilmore Avenue School, relating how classes were held in various off-site locations when enrollment exceeded capacity. She also mentions attending the high school on Rosser Avenue. Jean talks of joining the school band in high school, playing the cornet. She describes becoming a member of the National Juvenile Band, playing concerts in many places, including the British Columbia Penitentiary.

History: Interviewee biography: Bill Gruenthal was born in the British Mandate of Palestine, now Israel, in 1935 after his parents had fled Germany in advance of the then worsening political situation. Bill’s father died in 1942; some years later his mother remarried to an Irish-born senior civil servant in that government. He had a difficult and somewhat dangerous job. Soon after marriage, the family, including Bill’s older brother, Martin, immigrated to Canada in January 1947 on the strength of his step-father’s British Passport. They traveled via New York, where Bill’s uncle and his family resided and who put up the family. Later that month, the parents travelled by CP rail from Montreal to Vancouver, followed by Bill and his brother in March 1947 who travelled from New York to White Rock on an American railroad. While passing through the Fraser Valley Bill’s parents took an interest in Silverdale, a small hamlet west of Mission where the four eventually settled. Bill finished High School in Mission and soon joined the insurance industry. Bill connected with the Jewish Community in Vancouver where he met his soon-to-be wife. Upon marriage they were transferred to Calgary; after five years suffering its cold weather they were transferred back to Vancouver. They settled in Burnaby in 1966 as an affordable neighbourhood with easy access to his office downtown Vancouver. Outside work, Bill helped raise his family of three daughters who all graduated Burnaby High School (Alpha). They joined Temple Sholom in Vancouver, and he volunteered and still volunteers for a number of non-profits, including The Jewish Museum and Archives and Nikkei Place Foundation (Burnaby). He was an early long-term supporter and a past president of Burquest Jewish Community Association, mostly involving persons from Burnaby, New Westminster, and the Tri-Cities area (hence the name). He ran for political office in Burnaby in 1976 but was not elected. He delivers food in Burnaby for the Food Bank and is a donor to many worthy causes including Burnaby General Hospital. Interviewer biography: Eric Damer is a Burnaby Village Museum Interpreter, Museum Registrar, Researcher and Blacksmith. Eric pounded hot steel for the first time in 1977 in junior high. Fifteen years later, he joined Burnaby Village Museum where he has smithed for three decades. He also provides historical research for museum exhibits and special projects. Outside the museum, Eric is a social historian with a special interest in educational history.

Jean continues talking about life in the house in Kitsilano, and she recalls where her daughters lived at various times. She talks of buying a house with Walter when they returned to Burnaby, and how later she lived with Terry for a while after Walter died. Jean notes that her mother was a Christian Scientist. She discusses going to the services and Sunday school the church offered, on Georgia Street in Vancouver. Jean describes how physical punishment was meted out for offenses in her family. She relates how she enjoyed looking at boats from the pier in downtown Vancouver, and begins to share a story about her father, but the tape ends.

Scope and Content: Track 6: This portion of the recording pertains to the way life has changed since Jean was a child. Jean describes how chores were done, and how supplies were delivered. She and Terry discuss the amenities in the family’s houses, how mail was picked up, and how telephone messages were received and relayed. Terry shares a memory of her grandmother Wright. Jean recalls the house on Kitchener Street which she and Walter built. She and Terry talk about the MacLure bus service. Terry recalls Jean’s kindness to neighbors, and how they reciprocated. Jean shares her perspective about the friendliness and sharing among neighbors which were usual at that time. She describes the work involved in clearing the lot and building the house on Kitchener Street, and how she kept a kitchen garden and domestic animals there. Jean discusses how hair styling was done in her youth, and relates a story of how her mother had a poor result with colouring products. She mentions her father using a razor and strop, and how the strop was also a symbol of physical punishment, common at that time. She describes a punishment she received in school. Jean recalls making treats, and talks about push lawnmowers, wooden sidewalks, and gravel roads. She and Terry talk about the family’s pianos and their importance to the family. Jean recalls the piano teachers her family members took lessons from and Terry remarks that the last one, Edward Parker, is the father of Jon Kimura Parker, a noted pianist.

Summary of interview conducted on September 6, 2023: 0:00 – 16:09 Shirley Cohn shares background information about her parents who immigrated to Detroit from Hungary in the 1930’s. Shirley recalls what it was like for her parents being Jewish during World War II and how many of their relations were killed in the Holocaust. Shirley talks about her Jewish Hungarian heritage, what it was like growing up in Detroit, the Jewish community in Detroit and the Jewish holidays and traditions that her family celebrated. Shirley recalls her high school and University education and experiences, starting her career in social work and how she met her future husband, Theodore “Ted” Cohn. 16:10 – 18:27 Shirley shares the story about her father in law, Dr. Daniel E. Cohn who was Harry Houdini’s doctor at the time of his death in Detroit on Oct. 31, 1926. Shirley explains that she donated some of Dr. Daniel E. Cohn’s original documents pertaining to this event to the New York Public Library. 18:28 – 26:04 Shirley describes her experiences living and working in London Ontario while her husband was a professor at University of Western Ontario and Shirley worked as a social worker in family services. Shirley recalls experiences of anti-Semitism while living in London. Shirley talks about moving to Burnaby in 1977 after her husband took a job as a professor at Simon Fraser University. Shirley describes her experiences living in Burnaby, raising a family and working as a social worker at Burnaby General Hospital. 26:05 – 26:18 Shirley talks about her interests outside of work, her family’s involvement in the Burquest Jewish Community Association and being a member of Temple Shalom. Shirley recalls the changes that she’s encountered in Burnaby and in her career over the years, shares a story about her husband losing his thesis and describes what Burnaby was like while she was raising her family. Shirley shares what she thinks about the areas of development in Burnaby and conveys the importance of having parks and affordable housing. In closing, Shirley reflects on what is like to be a Jewish person living in Burnaby.

History: Interviewee biography: Shirley Tanner was born in Detroit in 1947. Her parents were both Jewish. Her mother fled Hungary as a refugee in 1939, while her father emigrated from there in 1934. Shirley attended public schools in Detroit, and then studied social work at the University of Michigan. After marriage, Shirley and Ted Cohn moved to Ontario where Ted had a faculty appointment at the University of Western Ontario in political science. Six years later they moved to Burnaby for Ted’s teaching position in political science at Simon Fraser University. While living in Burnaby, Shirley took care of a growing family while also practicing social work, mainly at Burnaby Hospital. The family enjoyed Burnaby’s libraries and parks. Shirley helped out at her children’s schools, became a Block Watch captain, and the family joined Burquest Jewish Community Association. The Cohns later became members of Temple Sholom Synagogue in Vancouver, while remaining in Burnaby. Beginning in 2009, Ted started an informal hiking group for retired Simon Fraser University staff. This group has been open to others, so now has a wide variety of members. Shirley has also helped lead hikes in the region. Scope and Content: Track 2: This portion of the recording pertains to the family’s new house, Jean’s parents, and what it was like to live in Vancouver Heights at that time. Jean describes what it was like to live in the house before it was finished, and how the family did their chores. She discusses the changes to chores, such as doing laundry, which occurred as the family adopted new technologies. Jean talks about her siblings, and the relativity of age. She recalls the birth of her younger brother, at home. She describes her parents’ backgrounds and how they met, after immigrating to Vancouver, as part of a close-knit Irish community. Jean recalls what the Vancouver Heights area was like in the 1920s. She mentions her father’s job, and recalls her mother’s daily occupations. She describes what she wore as a child, and the recreational activities of the time.

History: Recording is an interview with Jean Hogg conducted by her daughter Teresa Ballentine. Jean talks about her life as a resident of Burnaby from her childhood in the 1910s to widowhood in the 1960s. Margaret Jane (Jean) Wright was born in Burnaby in August 1915, two years after her family moved to 3871 East Pender Street. She was one of five children of Joseph Wright and Wilhelmina Williams. Her first husband was Walter Angus McCallum, who she was married to from 1940-1965; they raised two daughters: June and Teresa. Her second husband's last name was Hogg.

History: Interviewee biography: Normam Dowad was born and rasied in Burnaby. Norm graduated from Burnaby Central Secondary School, Simon Fraser University for one year, and obtained his law degree from York University. Norman began practicing law in 1974 years and has his own law practice that he operates out of Vancouver as of 2023. Interviewer biography: Eric Damer is a Burnaby Village Museum Interpreter, Museum Registrar, Researcher and Blacksmith. Eric pounded hot steel for the first time in 1977 in junior high. Fifteen years later, he joined Burnaby Village Museum where he has smithed for three decades. He also provides historical research for museum exhibits and special projects. Outside the museum, Eric is a social historian with a special interest in educational history.
