- Dress, c.1914-1918. White cotton pique. Calf length, three quarter length sleeves, buttons down centre front and up to neckline, waistband and cuffs.
The tight collar is edged with a scalloped trim; the right side of the collar extends diagonally to the right, making a slight V neck, and turns down the centre front. The trim follows the line to the waistband. At each shoulder just before the sleeve, there is a pleat that opens up. On the front at the waistband, there is some gathering in the waistband, and some small pleats at centre back. On the bodice front right, there is a small pocket that ends in a triangle shape and is topped with scalloped edging.
The sleeves are plain set-in, with fairly wide cuffs that turn up and are left open at the side.
Down the whole centre front there is an opening. Each side has holes, but no buttons remain: on the right, regular button holes and on the left, small bound holes.
The waistband is a two inch strip. Attached is the skirt in six slightly flared gores.

- Dress, c.1910-1913. Cotton lawn print in floral and checkered, with chiffon yoke, lace, and mauve satin silk waistband. Long tiered skirt, long sleeves, round neckline.
The cotton lawn fabric has a white background with vertical stripes of black and white checkers; purple flowers with green stems intertwine around the vertical checkers.
The neckline rounds into a slight V shape with a yoke of ivory chiffon on top of lace, which extends to the waistband. On the front and back right and left side of the bodice, there is a tab extending over the waistband from the bodice fabric, edged in lace. The bottom of the bodice is gathered to add some volume. The bodice is also open around the shoulders, edged with lace. There is a section of the main fabric underneath that connects to the lining.
The sleeves are full length, with some volume. The cuff begins halfway down the forearm with a gathered lace ruffle. The cuff section is narrower, and ends with three snaps at the wrist and another lace ruffle.
At the waist, there is a gathered mauve satin silk waistband, tacked on to the dress. The skirt is attached underneath in two tiers. The overskirt, attached to the bodice, has two somewhat flared gores and one godet on the right side seam from just above the knee to the calf. It also ends at the calf, and just above the hem there is a tiny band of drawn thread work embroidery. The bottom tier is attached to the skirt lining under the top hem; it is made up of four gores, all gathered.
The lining to the dress is done in ivory china silk, and it extends into the sleeves. In the bodice lining, there are four bones to hold its shape: on in the centre front and back, and one on each side. There are six panels in the back and four in the front, all finished with flat felled seams. The centre front closes with hook and eyes, and the waistband is secured on top with snaps and a hook and eye; the left bodice tab is secured to the waistband with two snaps. The skirt lining is also china silk, closing down the left side front with snaps. The skirt also has a left side opening that closes with snaps.
In each underarm there is a dress shield to protect the dress from perspiration. They each read: "Style 100 Trade Mark OMO. E. Y. 2. Odorless. No Rubber. Soak in cold soap suds, using good soap, scrub with a stiff brush, and rinse in clear cold water, shape carefully while wet, and dry thoroughly. Do not iron."

- Dress, c.1930s. Orange velvet with clear rhinestones and beads. Sleeveless with double shoulder straps, high waist with sash, long bias cut skirt that flares out to the bottom.
The dress has two sets of shoulder straps, both studded with white clear rhinestones and clear beading in oval designs. The straps are attached together at the front; the top straps attach to a the top corners of the back bodice panel, and the bottom straps attach to the back of the underarms. The bodice is lined with orange chiffon.
At the high waist, there is a self fabric belt that is tacked on at the front and hangs in the back. It closes on the left side with snaps, and there is a bow over the closure. The bodice and skirt also close here at the left seam, with snaps on the skirt and hooks and eyes on the bodice. The skirt attaches under the belt. It is cut on the bias, and flares out towards the bottom. The skirt ends at floor length with a hand rolled hem. There is also a separate self fabric bow with the dress, that is not attached.
There was a brown paper tag attached to the dress that reads "W Co / 1368." It is in the accession file.

- Dress, c.1924. Green rayon georgette. V neck, ruffle cap sleeves, decorative faggoted hemming in bodice, high waist line with tie belt, calf length skirt with ruffles.
There are are two rows of faggoted seams around the V neckline that converge at the front point. There are also three more rows around the bodice, which curve up to the V point. They are all covered by a bow. The cap sleeves have three tiers of flounces; each of these and the neckline are self bound with a half centimetre binding.
At a high waistline, there is a belt in the same fabric that is tacked on to the right side, and onto the left front and back with a draped effect. It is tied at the left side. The skirt has decorative seaming that extends from the sides at hip level, and curves down at side fronts. Here they fall straight down to the hems. On either side at the bottom of the dress, there are three rows of flounces. The flounces and hem are also self bound with half centimetre binding, and hand finished.
There is extensive detail in the finishing on each hem and seam. The faggoted seams are entirely hand sewn, and each ruffled hem is also bound and hand finished. The skirt seams are top stitched, and then whip-stitched inside to finish.
The slip is missing.

- Dress, c.1925-1929. Beige floral cotton rayon blend, with blue silk yoke and sleeves. Knee length skirt, dropped waist, straight shape with half length bishop sleeves.
The front of this dress has a blue silk yoke with attached collar, edged in pink ribbon. The yoke opens up with a V-neck, and has ten pink and gold buttons down the centre front. There is also one button directly under the left side of the collar, with a loop closure on the right. The rest of the bodice is beige cotton-rayon with a pattern of blue and red flowers, and it is unshaped.
The bishop sleeves are half length, with the fabric changing to blue silk two thirds of the way down. It closes at the cuff with a fabric tie.
At the end of the bodice yoke is a slightly dropped waistband of blue silk, and below this hangs two small triangle shapes edged in pink ribbon. The skirt is made of the blue floral fabric. It is cut as a straight tube, but there are three box pleats on the front to add some volume.

The open weave cotton material has embroidery in the art deco style. The bodice is hand sewn together along the embroidery lines, with a round neckline and a back that drapes open in a low hanging V shape. The sleeves have more of the same embroidery at the cuffs.
The back closure, just to the right of the centre, begins with an overlapping snap and two hooks and eyes at the waist. It continues with hooks and eyes to below the waist.
The skirt is machine sewn from one panel, heavily gathered all around the waist except for a section in the centre back. It continues until it reaches calf length, and ends with embroidery at the hem.

- Dress, c.1913-1914. Cream china silk skirt, silk chiffon sleeves, white cotton lawn bodice, ivory lace trim. High directoire waistline, long sleeves, full length skirt.
The neckline is a boat neck, trimmed with a small band of ivory lace with an abstract design. The bodice of white lawn is unshaped except for a dart under each bust, and there is also a tuck near the waist.
Each sleeve attaches onto the bodice side fronts, and the bodice is hemmed within. The chiffon sleeves extend in a kimono cut to a gathered wrist with a china silk cuff attached by chain stitch embroidery. It closes with two snaps.
The china silk skirt attaches at a high waist. It has gathers all around except for the centre front. Just past the knee, it has three large tucks that go around the circumference of the skirt and a fourth that is actually a hem. The dress has snap closures up the centre back, from the neckline to just past the hips.

- Dress, c.1910. Black satin silk, ivory lace yoke. High collar, three quarter length sleeves, black lace, embroidery, and ruffle trim, floor length with an overskirt.
The high lace collar has stays, and it continues into a yoke on the front and back. The centre front and back bodice beneath this have gathered panels, in a V shape on the back. Beneath this on the front, there are two rectangles joined by a faggoting stitch. On either side there are four round black velvet buttons, and on either side of that there is a black ruffle that extends over the shoulders to the back waist. Attached to the ruffle is a band of black lace, and on centre front below the rectangles there is a large appliquéd piece of black embroidered lace.
The sleeves are fairly fitted. They are ruched and taper down to a slightly more fitted cuff, edged with gathered ribbon and a band of lace.
The waist is at natural height, without any cinching. It is defined by a black ruffle on either side and a band of lace at the front and back. At centre back there is a black appliqué that is the same as the one on top of the waist at centre front. There are also three pin tucks at either side of the centre back, extending from the appliqué on the overskirt. At the centre front of the overskirt, there is a black ruffle that extends to its hem. At the hem, the ruffle curves down on either side front and angles into two square shapes at either side back. The underskirt has six gores; at calf level, the main dress fabric is attached.
The bodice closes up the centre back with hooks and eyes. Beneath there is also a lining that closes separately with hooks and eyes at the centre back. It has seven featherbones encircling the top of the waist. The overskirt, underskirt, and waistband close separately with hooks and eyes at the back left.

- Dress, c.1925-1929. Red cotton backed silk velvet. Straight draped cut, sleeveless, draped collar, knee length. Bag of scraps with dress on hanger.
This dress is handmade, and even includes the leftover scraps. The neckline is a wide scoop in the back with five pin tucks. The shoulders are gathered in the front, and smooth in the back. The front neckline is a V shape, perhaps a lopsided V, depending on how the snap closure that has since come off the right side was positioned. The left side of the V neck has two pleats.
There is no shaping at the waist, but the right side of the dress is gathered up to the left at dropped waist level, and fixed with a large rose decoration with a filigree and white jeweled broach. At the right seam, it is also gathered into several pleats, with an extended section that drapes down outside the right seam. The hem angles down to the right slightly. The right and left sides of the dress are left open except for the section gathered under the rose decoration, overlapping on the left side by several inches. The edges are faced with red silk chiffon.

- Dress, c. 1921-1925. Blue wool crepe dress without shaping. A pink scarf is attached to the collar, and there is a false undershirt.
This dress is in the typical straight shape and mid-calf length of the first half of the 1920s. The subtle motif of three scallops in the skirt, lapel, ties, and cuffs is typical of the period's art deco design. The only shaping in the garment comes from tiny darts in the shoulders; a few pleats in the centre front as well as the loose fit of the garment allows the wearer to walk with ease.
The collar is low and rolled, with pink silk forming the public side. The underside is of the same fabric as the dress. The collar extends on either side in long strips that can be used as a tie or scarf. The ties end in the scalloped pattern of three bumps.
Lapels extend on the bodice to just below the bust area, with three gold metallic buttons on the left side. Under the lapel opening is a false undershirt in the same pink silk as the collar. It closes with snaps, under false ivory coloured buttons with a pinwheel design. About two inches below the spot where the lapels meet, there are also belt loops on either side of the dress to indicate a dropped waist, although there is no waist shaping. The belt is not present.
Where the lapels come together, the line of the right lapel continues downward diagonally to the left front. It then returns to the centre in a scalloped diagonal pattern, and at each scallop a new pleat extends into the skirt.
The sleeves are plain except for the cuffs, which repeat the scalloped pattern of the lapels and skirt. There is one gold metallic closure on each cuff.
The skirt ends with a false hem, which is hand sewn. There are quite a few hand sewn finishes to keep the dress in place, especially with the false undershirt, but it is mainly machine sewn. The seams are finished with a serger.

A geometric beaded pattern encircles the wide round neckline. The sleeves, attached with a corded seam, are brown chiffon. They flare out into a bishop sleeve, gathered to a velvet cuff with diagonal strips of velvet decorating the forearm.
The skirt attaches at a dropped waist with a corded seam. It is sewn in two panels, and slightly gathered. On the skirt there are two rings of a beaded design: lines of long beads interrupted by a large beaded butterfly with clear plastic purple beads on the antennas. The front and back both have a butterfly on the top right and bottom left. The hem is held up on the inside with the bottom line of beading.

- Dress with bolero jacket, c. 1930s. Black cotton lace with black silk chiffon slip. Sleeveless, low draped back, ankle length slightly flared at the bottom. Long sleeved lace bolero with metal brooch clasp.
The dress has a round neckline in front that drapes into a deep V in the back. There is a magnet at the centre front of the neckline to hold up the metal clasp of the bolero. The bodice attaches at a fairly high waistline. At the front of the skirt, there is are two triangular sections that make up the top section; on the back, there is one triangular piece cut into the top section of the skirt. The rest of it is cut as a front and back section, with a slight flare at the bottom.
The slip is cut differently, and may not be the original that went with the dress since it lacks the corresponding shoulder snaps. Each shoulder strap has five rows of smocking on the top. They meet at a triangle shape with gathering under the breasts, and at the back at the waistline in the same way as the dress. The skirt hangs in six gores which also flare out somewhat at the bottom. It is somewhat longer than the dress, visible at the bottom for several inches. The seams are unfinished.
The bolero is long sleeved, gathered to cuffs at the wrist, with purposeful large holes at each underarm. It has two darts at the bottom back, and a triangular shape hangs down from the centre back neckline. The front angles down to points from each shoulder, where there is a silver metal brooch clasp with clear rhinestones. It is held up with the magnet in the dress, which gives the bolero front a draped affect.

- Dress with coat. c.1930. Brown china silk. Brown and yellow embroidered flowers. The coat and dress are attached. Long sleeves, sash tie collar, button trim.
The 'coat' has a roll collar that falls in a deep V neck, and extends into long sashes that tie at the V point. The armholes have a corded binding. Jacket is actually sleeveless, and the sleeves attach instead to the dress beneath. They are quite loose, with a seam at the elbow. From this point to the wrist, there is a split in each sleeve. The slits are tacked back together at the wrists.
A few inches below the sash tie, there is a seam in the jacket at the natural waistline. A belt is tacked to the sides and closes in the centre front with snaps. The centre front of the jacket is left out, and along the inside edge of either side front panel there is a heavy trim of metal self-fabric covered ball buttons from beneath the hips to the hem. At each side and at the centre back, there is a slit in the jacket from the knees to the hem, each trimmed in the same buttons.
The dress beneath is made of the same brown silk, with an allover pattern of white and dark brown embroidered flowers. Only the sections that are visible beneath the jacket are made from this material; the covered sections in the bodice are made of ivory silk, and the covered section in the skirt are made of the same material as the jacket. There is no shaping in the dress. The jacket and dress hems both fall to calf length.

- Evening bodice, c.1910. Black satin silk. V shaped panels over shoulders to centre front and back, half length sleeves with white ruffle cuff, pleated waistband, embroidery.
There are two pleated panels that go over each shoulder and angle down to meet at centre front and cross over at centre back. They have three knife pleats, and on the half closest to the centre they are covered with floral embroidered net. At the back the opening left by the crossover panels is filled with a plain black piece; at the front, it is filled with a black piece covered in embroidered net.
The sleeves are unlined, with a dress shield at each underarm. There is a bound hole above each elbow. The hole is 'closed' with a false self bound button. The cuff is ivory chiffon with mini pleats and drawn thread embroidery at its edge. At the bottom of the bodice, which is round at the back and pointed down slightly in the front, there is a waistband with four pleats. At the centre front, five self covered buttons are aligned in a vertical line, one to each pleat section.
The bodice is lined with purple cotton and eleven bones. Attached to the centre back at waist level, there is also a grosgrain ribbon belt. The belt has an embroidered label that reads: "James Spence Co. Ltd., 75 to 79 St. Pauls Churchyard Churchyard, London, EC. Ball & Dinner Dresses, Ladies' Tailor." The bodice lining and waistband closes at centre front with hooks and eyes (the waistbands also over laps and connects with hooks and eyes to the left). The front embroidered panel connects with snaps underneath the left pleated panel.

- Evening bodice, c.1860-1865. Silk taffeta ikat design, cream background with purple stripes and flowers. Low round neck, short puff sleeves, round natural waist length.
The low round neckline is bordered by a thin purple velvet ribbon, and the neck edge is corded. The short puff sleeves rest low on the shoulders with corded seams, and they are gathered into a cuff trimmed with the same velvet ribbon. The front of the bodice has a centre panel and two side panels with top stitched seams that run in an upwards arc from the underarms to either side of the centre front. The back of the bodice has two darts on either side, and a centre back closure of hooks and thread eyes.
Inside, the bodice is lined in white linen. It has boning in each side seam, as well as each back dart. At the bottom, there is a waist band of the same fabric. The bodice fabric print consists of a cream background with vertical purple stripes separated by vertical floral zig-zags. The zig-zags are connected the green stems, and at each corner there is a bud in a pattern of pink, blue, and purple.

- Evening dress, c.1930s. Burnt out silk velvet: cream chiffon base with white and brown velvet leaf pattern. High waist, floor length, sleeveless, flares towards bottom.
This sleeveless dress has a round neckline. The bodice section uses bias shaping, with diagonal lines under each bust with a small amount of gathering. This forms a triangular shape that comes up into the middle of the bust, and at the bottom of the triangle the lines angle in again almost forming a diamond; before they do, the lines sweep out again to form gores on the skirt section.
On the lower back, there is a zig-zag pattern to the seam. The skirt flares out to a floor length hem. At the top of each shoulder straps there is a small strap with a snap that would connect to a slip, but there is no slip present.

- Evening dress, c.1912. Cream silk charmeuse with beaded lace overlay. High waist, directoire style. Half length sleeves, floor length skirt, rosettes on lower back of skirt.
The dress has a round neckline edged with a finer lace, and a bodice that is entirely covered in a layer of lace. On the lace there are abstract beaded patterns. Hanging from the right shoulder across to the centre front, there is a panel of finer lace. The main lace extends to halfway down the sleeve, and on the second half it is covered in the fine lace.
At the high waistline, the lace hangs in two split pieces that overlap at the centre front. The silk layer of the skirt is made in a front and back panel. The hem goes up to calf level, and the hem stitching is attached to a row of beading on the front of the skirt. At the centre back, at calf level, the two halves of the lace are held up together in a ball with wired rosettes.
The lace closes at the centre back with hooks and eyes to cover the closure in the main fabric. The silk layer closes up the the neckline at the centre back with hooks and eyes.

- Evening dress, c.1930. Blue and pink shot acetate taffeta. Large puffed short sleeves, belt, peplum, long skirt. Quilting detail on sleeve ends, belt, and peplum.
The dress has a relatively high V neckline. The sleeves are both pleated at the top of the cap, and very voluminous. Their short ends have ten quilted bands, and one small un-quilted section at the end. At the centre back of the bodice it is open to the waist, with a hook and eye at the very top of the neckline. At the bottom front, the bodice attaches in two pleats at either side of the centre front of the waistline.
A flared peplum extends from the waist with twenty quilted bands. There is also a belt around the waist made up of five quilted bands. It attaches via a belt loop on either side of the waist and attaches to itself with two self fabric covered ball buttons and loops. The peplum closes at centre front with six of the same buttons and loops. The skirt that extends underneath has a centre front closure of three snaps. It has four gores and reaches floor length.
