Heritage Value: The Capitol Hill Community Hall was designed by local architect Harold Cullerne (1890-1976). After Cullerne returned from service during the First World War, he joined J.H. Bowman in a partnership that lasted from 1919 to 1934. After Bowman retired in 1934, Cullerne practiced on his own, continuing to work on schools and institutional buildings, such as the Art Deco Hollywood Theatre in Vancouver. In 1944, Cullerne designed a community hall for Capitol Hill; the scheme was delayed, and redesigned before it was finally built after the end of the Second World War. A simple front gabled roof hall structure, this hall is a monument to community spirit, erected by community members on a volunteer basis, and used for community events for over half a century. The hall replaced two earlier structures, both destroyed by fire, that had served the same purpose.

Object History: The tools included in this donation belonged to Samuel Robins. Samuel and his wife Sarah Ann Robins moved to Burnaby in 1918. Robins could not find work in England in 1912 so he set off for New Zealand to find work. The ship he was to have sailed upon was delayed, but he needed to arrive in New York in time for the train to connect for the ship to New Zealand, so he sailed on the Olympic -- the sister ship to the Titanic. Upon arrival in New York he wired Sarah Ann grandmother that he had arrived safely. Samuel was a stonemason who worked on many projects in the Lower Mainland, including constructing houses in Shaughnessy and he also worked in the Vancouver City Hall. The family lived on Dover Street. His granddaughter believes that he brought his tools with him when he came to Canada.

Description: Tin, metal box with hinged lid. Lid has coloured portraits of Prince Albert and Queen Victoria. Each side has portrait of Queen Victoria from four different years. Each portrait is framed with a gold coloured border and is surrounded by a few flowers.

Object History: On 22 September 1896, Victoria surpassed George III as the longest reigning monarch in English, Scottish, and British history. The Queen requested all special public celebrations of the event to be delayed until 1897, to coincide with her Diamond Jubilee. The Colonial Secretary, Joseph Chamberlain, proposed that the Diamond Jubilee be made a festival of the British Empire.

Marks/Labels: Lid has "Prince Albert" and "Queen Victoria" to the side of each portrait and "1837" between the portraits. Under each of the portraits on the sides of the tin are the dates "1897", "1821", "1837" and "1832". Underside of tin has partial stamp "...FRY Co LONDON" "MAKER".
