History: Jim Wolf talks about Love Farmhouse with Esther Stanley, daughter of Jesse and Martha Love. They discuss the property, and the furnishings, decoration and amenities of the house as she remembers them. Esther’s recollections were to be used as a resource for redecorating and refurnishing the house as it was in 1925 for its use as an exhibit at the Burnaby Village Museum. Esther’s daughters are also present at the interview.

Scope and Content: Photograph of the interior of the Love farmhouse dining room with a large picture window and open doorway into a living room with a television set in the corner. The living room off of the dining room was once closed in and used as a bedroom for Jesse and Martha Love and was restored after the house was moved from it's location of 7651 Cumberland Street (Address pre 1960: 1390 Cumberland Road) to the Burnaby Village Museum in 1988. This photograph was taken while Elsie Hughes (nee Love), her husband John Hughes and son Brent Hughes lived in the house. Elsie is the daughter of Sarah (nee Love) and William Parker. Sarah and William purchased the house in 1928, shortly after the death of Sarah's father, Jesse Love. Sarah and William Parker lived in the house with their three children, Albert, Bill and Elsie. William Parker died in 1961 and Sarah continued to live in the house until 1966 before selling it to her daughter Elsie and son in law John Hughes. Elsie and John lived in the house with their son Brent until 1971.

Description: Mahogany dresser C. 1920; donor plaque affixed to upper right hand drawer per curator; rectangular mirror with beveled edge is attached to curved brackets which extend up from back of dresser, can be tilted; two small drawers at top, two full-width ones below; all drawers have keyholes but plate is missing from upper right drawer

Object History: The mahogany dresser was donated by Gordon Love, son of John Leonard Love and also grandson of Jesse Love. The dresser was used in the Love farmhouse by Jesse's wife Martha Love. The dresser might have been part of John Leonard Love's inheritance when Jesse Love passes away. The handles on the dresser were replaced at some time with modern hardware. The hardware was replaced with more appropriate hardware for the 1920 time period. The dresser is located in the master bedroom of the Love farmhouse.

Description: The core of the Jessie Love farm house is a 1893 two story, pioneer tent style building. The home was added to over the years and became a large Craftsmen style farm house.

Object History: Built on Cumberland Road in Burnaby in 1893. Music Room/Parlour/Living Room and bedrooms above added c.1898. Kitchen added c.1908. The home of Jesse and Martha Love and their eleven children. One of Burnaby's oldest structures. The home was moved to Burnaby Village Museum in the late 1980s and has been partially restored to its 1920s appearance.

Object History: This lamp was given to Annie Love (daughter of Jesse and Martha Love) by her brother George Love (the oldest son of Jesse and Martha) as a wedding gift for her 1902 marriage to Wallace "Flash" Whiting. George Love owned his own sash and door company. The lamp was hand made by George Love from one solid piece of wood.

The front of the leaflet has a sepia toned photograph of Jesse Love standing in front of the garden, Martha Love and one of their daughters standing on the porch of the house. Inside, there is a picture of the reproduced wallpaper and information regarding the house. On the back of the leaflet is the City of Burnaby logo for Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services. The leaflet measures 18cm x 13.5cm.

Object History: This artifact was used at the official opening of the Love Farmhouse exhibit, November 29, 1998; for distribution.

Love family members recall that Jesse Love purchased a peanut tube radio for his youngest daughter Hanna Victoria Love when she was the last child at home (after his wife Martha died in August 1920).

This series of 26 "Elsie" girls books are said, by the donor, to have been purchased by Jesse Love and his son in law Wallace (Flash) Whiting for the youngest of Jesse and Martha Love's children Hannah Victoria (Girlie) Love, age 10 at the time, and Annie (Love) Whiting's daughter Edith, age 8 at the time. The book series seems to have made their way through some of Jesse Love's daughter's children. Mrs. Whiting. Sarah (Love) Parker, daughter of Jesse Love, even named her daughter Elsie (Parker) Hughes after the main character of the series. The books seem to have made their way through the children and grand children of Annie (Love) and Wallace Whiting. The were donated by Edna Whiting, the daughter in law of Alfred Whiting, one of Annie's sons.
