- The Jesse Love House is a vernacular example of a late Victorian-era wood-frame farmhouse with later Arts and Crafts alterations and additions, that has been relocated to the Burnaby Village Museum. This two-storey house has an L-shaped plan, with a compound gabled roof, overhanging eaves and a large wraparound verandah.
- Heritage Value
- The value of the Jesse Love House lies in its comprehensive representation of an early Burnaby farmhouse, and the typical additive growth of a home as the resident family prospered. Jesse Love (1849-1928) and his wife Martha Love (1858-1920) moved to Burnaby in 1893 with their family to start a fruit ranch and market garden on Cumberland Road in the East Burnaby district. Jesse Love was actively involved in community affairs, serving on the Burnaby School Board and also as a District Councillor in 1901 and from 1904-07. The original house was constructed by local builder George Salt and consisted of an entrance hall, dining room, lean-to kitchen, master bedroom and several rooms upstairs. As the family grew and prospered, additions were made to the house including a parlour, more bedrooms upstairs, and a large permanent kitchen. Jesse Love was actively involved in community affairs, and the kitchen became a local gathering spot for political discussion and civic organizations. The verandah, exterior shingle cladding, large windows, running water and electricity were eventually added as well. The heritage value for this house also lies in its interpretive value within the Burnaby Village Museum. The site is an important cultural feature for the interpretation of Burnaby’s heritage to the public. The house was moved to the Burnaby Village Museum in 1988 and both the interior and exterior were restored and interpreted to their 1925 period, including reproduction wallpaper.

- Serving platter, 16 X 12 inches. Made by J & G Meakin, Hanley, England. It is a [C]haplet patern. Blue patern with raised dots around the top edge. The patern is raised on the short sides of the oval. There is a chip on the inside of the bottom surface. "21 is pressed into the underside.

- Object History
- This lamp was given to Annie Love (daughter of Jesse and Martha Love) by her brother George Love (the oldest son of Jesse and Martha) as a wedding gift for her 1902 marriage to Wallace "Flash" Whiting. George Love owned his own sash and door company. The lamp was hand made by George Love from one solid piece of wood.

- Film footage documenting informal interviews with brothers William “Bill” and Albert Parker conducted by Burnaby Village Museum curator, Colin Stevens. The footage opens in the administration building of the Burnaby Village Museum where Bill Parker describes a pair of cross country skis that he is donating to the museum. Bill recollects how he constructed the skis out of cedar in the late 1920s when he was about 9 or 10 years old. Bill tells of how he skied in the neighbourhood of the Jesse Love farmhouse on Cumberland Road, using the skis until the mid to late 1930s. The film continues with a tour of the Jesse Love farmhouse which is under restoration on site of the Burnaby Village Museum. Curator Colin Stevens takes Albert and Bill Parker through various rooms inside of the house sharing details of what staff have discovered during the restoration process and gathers informative details by interviewing them. During the interviews, the brothers recollect what it was like living in the house in the 1920s. They provide details on the house’s construction, fixtures, heating and water systems along with particulars regarding furnishings and décor. Information that was gathered through interviews such as this, supported the restoration to be completed as accurately as possible.
- History
- Albert and William Charles “Bill” Parker are the sons of Sarah Parker (nee Love) and William Parker. Sarah Parker was the daughter of Jesse and Martha Love and grew up in the Love farmhouse located at 1390 Cumberland Road in Burnaby. Sarah and William Parker and their three children (Albert, Bill and Elsie) moved into the Love farmhouse in about 1925, eventually buying it in 1928 following the death of Sarah’s father Jesse Love. Sarah continued to live in the house until after her husband William died and eventually sold the house to her daughter Elsie Hughes and her husband John Hughes in 1966.

- Track 4: This portion of the interview takes place in the Love farmhouse kitchen. Elsie recalls the layout and uses of the room’s furnishings and fixtures. She and Jim also discuss the garden. Elsie relates an anecdote about a bullet being accidentally fired into the ceiling, making a hole which had to be patched. They talk about the use of the sink, which was the only one in the house for many years, and the lighting. Jim asks Elsie about the bathroom and the pantry. This track ends abruptly.

- Recording of an interview with Elsie Hughes (nee Parker) that was conducted by Jim Wolf in the Love farmhouse on site at the Burnaby Village Museum on May 1, 1989. Jim Wolf walks through the Love Farmhouse with Elsie Hughes after it was moved onto the site of the Burnaby Village Museum in 1988. Elsie Hughes who was the daughter of William and Sarah Parker and granddaughter of Jesse and Martha Love. Elsie married John Malcolm Hughes at St. Alban's Church in Burnaby on April 9, 1942. Elsie and Jim discuss the furnishings, decoration and amenities of the house at the time she moved into it in 1925 with her family. Elsie’s recollections were to be used as a resource for redecorating and refurnishing the house as it was in 1925 for its use as an exhibit at the Burnaby Village Museum. An unidentified man is also present, and sometimes contributes to the conversation.

- Photograph of the interior of the Love farmhouse dining room with a large picture window and open doorway into a living room with a television set in the corner. The living room off of the dining room was once closed in and used as a bedroom for Jesse and Martha Love and was restored after the house was moved from it's location of 7651 Cumberland Street (Address pre 1960: 1390 Cumberland Road) to the Burnaby Village Museum in 1988. This photograph was taken while Elsie Hughes (nee Love), her husband John Hughes and son Brent Hughes lived in the house. Elsie is the daughter of Sarah (nee Love) and William Parker. Sarah and William purchased the house in 1928, shortly after the death of Sarah's father, Jesse Love. Sarah and William Parker lived in the house with their three children, Albert, Bill and Elsie. William Parker died in 1961 and Sarah continued to live in the house until 1966 before selling it to her daughter Elsie and son in law John Hughes. Elsie and John lived in the house with their son Brent until 1971.
