. In the
year 1897, as the festive date for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee drew
near, Claude Hill stacked up a huge woodpile for another reason. He
planned to light it as a celebration bonfire. When the big moment arrived
the burning tower of wood lit up the darkened sky creating a beacon that
could be seen

Due to poor road conditions, people ordered their
winter supplies in in the fall. Freighting the goods
was no easy task, George always said, and he had to
hire at least eight extra wagons, each pulled by four
horses.
