Scope and Content: Venus Solano is on the carousel. She is riding a white horse with a grey mane. Horse has a red bridle. The saddle blanket is blue with three white stars. Breast decoration has flower with four white petals.

History: From Scrapbook vol III The Story in Photographs Continues. In 1989, Ms. Venus Solano and Mr. Doug McCalum and other local people came together to "Save the Carousel" and formed the "Friends of the Vancouver Carousel Society". In May 1989, Burnaby Village Museum agreed to provide a home for the carousel and the "Friends", led by President Don Wrigley, set about raising the $350,000 to purchase the machine. Keith Jamieson, a carousel expert, was brought in to coordinate the rebuilding project. With a lot of hard work, the help of the Government of British Columbia and the support of the Municipality of Burnaby, the carousel was purchased. Funds were also raised to pay for the restoration, and Burnaby agreed to build a new pavilion for it as a Centennial project.

History: "The C.W. Parker no. 119 carousel was built in 1912 in Leavenworth Kansas by the Charles Wallace Parker Company. It was the one hundred and nineteenth carousel made by the company and was so named the C.W. Parker no. 119 carousel. In 1913 the carousel was sold to Mr. F.K. Leggett of Houston Texas for $5,886.00 and was originally equipped with a steam engine and ""wishbones/grass-hopper/jumping horse"" mechanisms. It toured Texas for two years with the Lone Star Circus until 1915 when the machine was shipped back to the factory. It is believed that the machine was rebuilt by the factory with fancier horses and heavier rounding boards referred to as the “Superior” style. Some of the horses were built around 1917 and some between 1920 and 1922. The factory records consulted do not tell for certain where the machine went between 1915 and 1936, possibly to San Jose, California from 1918 until 1922 and then to San Francisco California, or Tacoma, Washington. Accounts from the family of James W. "Jimmy" Robertson, supervisor of rides for Happyland, tell of him travelling with his wife Dora Robertson to Washington, Oregon and California in the fall of 1935 or early 1936 to pick up a new carousel for Happyland. By May 1936, the C.W. Parker no. 119 carousel was in operation in Happlyland inside Hastings Park. The Parker #119 carousel was installed in a pavilion in Happyland which had been built in 1928 by a rival company (Philadelphia Toboggan Company - P.T.C.) and was located next to the "Shoot the Chutes" ride in Hastings Park. Here it remained until Happyland was demolished in 1957. The C.W. Parker no. 119 carousel was then moved to a new small pavilion in Playland until that too was demolished in 1972. From 1972 to 1990, the C.W. Parker no. 119 carousel was operated outdoors inside Playland, and was put away each winter. In 1989 it was announced that the carousel would be sold off horse by horse at an auction in New York. Venus Solano and Doug McCallum and other local people came together to save the carousel and formed The Lower Mainland Association of Friends of the Vancouver Carousel (also known as "Friends of the Carousel"). The first directors of the society consisted of, President and Chairman, Venus Solano; Secretary, Doug McCallum; Director, Keith Jamieson and Director, Nina Freid Rhodes. In May 1989, the Friends of the Carousel approached the Burnaby Village Museum Association who agreed to provide a home for the carousel, pending the approval of Burnaby Municipal Council. Don Wrigley who was president of the Burnaby Village Museum Association joined the board of The Friends of the Carousel as a liaison. The Friends of the Carousel first acquired two horses from the carousel, who were named Julius and Belle. These two carousel horses were used in fundraising over the summer of 1990, at which time the carousel was operating again for a short time inside Playland. The carousel horse named Julius was restored by William Dentzel III (a descendant of one of North America’s original carousel manufacturers) and the carousel horse named Belle was partially stripped and repaired. These carousel horses served as before and after examples of restoration. In June 1990 Don Wrigley was elected as president of The Friends of the Carousel and they set about raising the $350,000 to purchase the carousel and begin restoration work. With a lot of hard work, the help of the Government of British Columbia and the support of the Municipality of Burnaby, the carousel was purchased. Funds were also raised by The Friends of the Carousel to pay for the restoration, and Burnaby agreed to build a new pavilion for it as a Centennial project. Keith Jamieson, a carousel expert, was brought in to coordinate the rebuilding project and restoration work. The Centennial Parker Carousel (C.W. Parker no. 119 carousel) and the Don Wrigley Pavilion where the carousel is housed, opened at Burnaby Village Museum on March 25, 1993.

Scope and Content: Item consists of a video recording of a live Zoom webinar hosted by Burnaby Village Museum Community Engagement Coordinator Christina Froschauer. The webinar is titled "Ups and Downs of Conserving the C.W. Parker Carousel". The webinar is the fifth in a series of six webinars presented in partnership by Burnaby Village Museum and Burnaby Public Library. The live webinar was also made available on the Burnaby Village Museum's facebook page. Community members were invited to participate by bringing questions during the interactive online sessions. With thousands of people riding the Carousel every year, it is a wonder this 110-year-old fairground favourite keeps on turning. In the off-season, many dedicated hours go into the careful repair and maintenance of the Carousel. From cogs and gears to paints and jewels, this session covers the ups and downs of Carousel conservation. The first speaker is BVM conservator “Liz” Czerwinski. Liz’s presentation is titled “119 Parker Carousel at the Burnaby Village Museum”. Liz speaks about her role and responsibility at BVM as the conservator and her many responsibilities including the carousel. Liz provides an overview of how BVM preserves the carousel as a museum artifact and how it needs to meet current safety standards as a mechanical amusement ride. Liz provides historical background regarding the C.W. Parker no. 119 carousel and the establishment of the Lower Mainland Association of the Friends of the Vancouver Carousel “The Friends of the Carousel” to save the carousel in the 1990s and the installation of the carousel at Burnaby Village Museum. She describes the intense maintenance and mechanics of the carousel to keep it in operation and the preservation and ongoing conservation of the hand carved and painted horses and wooden carousel flooring. The second speaker is Carly Bouwman. Carly works in the area of artistic conservation as an exhibit preparator at Burnaby Village Museum and works with the Conservation Department team to restore the carousel bi annually. Carly’s talk is supported with a slide show detailing the process and many aspects of conservation work that is done on the hand carved and painted carousel horses. Conservation painting techniques are based on a manual created by volunteer Dorothy Seton Clarke. The third speaker is Michael DesMazes. Michael supports his talk with film footage documenting the mechanics and maintenance of the C.W. Parker no. 119 Carousel. Michael provides a commentary explaining some of the regular weekly, monthly and yearly mechanical maintenance and inspection that is done to the maintain the carousel. Film footage provides a detailed view of the working components of the carousel. Following the presentations Elizabeth Czerwinski, Michael DeMazes and Carly Bouwman answer questions from the attendees and comment further on the information. Some of the subjects covered include: significance of design details on the carousel horses, how the Wurtlitzer band organ works, painting and stripping techniques, running speed of the carousel, favourite carousel horses, significance of the rotational direction of the carousel, publication “A Carousel is Magic: the Saving of Parker #119 by the Friends of the Carousel ", accessibility design components on the carousel, safety specifications and guidelines, naming of the carousel horses and what the future holds for the next 50 years of operation of the carousel.

History: Christina Froschauer has worked in various museums and art galleries across Canada over the past two decades and since January 2021, has worked as the Museum Community Engagement Coordinator at the Burnaby Village Museum. Her educational background includes a Masters in Art History and two Bachelor of Arts – one in Visual Arts and the other in Archaeology. Her research focus has been centered around artists whose work challenges and Indigenizes the Western Canons of Art History. In addition to her work at the museum, Christina is a sessional professor of Canadian Studies at Langara College. Elizabeth "Liz" Czerwinski is the Conservator for the Burnaby Village Museum. She has a Master of Art Conservation from Queens University, internship experience in the conservation of paintings and archaeological collections, and has been engaged with the smallest (hat pins) and largest (tram and carousel) preservation activities at the museum since 1992. Carly Bouwman is a freelance visual artist and designer, living in Southwestern British Columbia. Her professional projects include digital illustrations and graphics, residential interior design contracts, and 2-D and 3-D custom designed and fabricated works of art for private and public display. She also holds a position at the Burnaby Village Museum as an exhibit preparator and works with the conservation department to restore the carousel bi-annually. Michael DesMazes was born and raised in Abbotsford. Michael’s childhood home is a heritage landmark now called the Trethewey House Museum. His Mother was the past President of the Abbotsford Heritage society and Michael himself first volunteered for the Abbotsford Museum when he was 14. Michael has also worked at the Langley Centennial Museum and for three years headed up the Fraser Valley Military Museum and Archives, a by-product of his Museum studies at SFU in 1987. That same year Michael first joined the Burnaby Village as the Blacksmith for the museums first school programs. By 1990 Michael had become a relief interpreter covering every zone in the Village and was one of the researchers for Burnaby’s 100th anniversary project. Michael is the Official RCAF Historian for Boundary Bay and Abbotsford airports and has established and maintained Facebook pages on both for the last five years. He is a long-time member of the Organization of Military Museums of Canada (OMMC). Leaving the Burnaby Village Museum in January 1990, Michael enrolled in the Canadian Forces Primary reserves as a Medical Assistant with the 12th Vancouver Medical Company. It was during this time that Michael was also contracted to research and assembly a historical collection for Nabob’s 100th anniversary. In 1996 after leaving the Reserves, Michael returned to the Burnaby Village Museum as a new carousel operator. Today, 26 years later, Michael is still at the carousel as the senior operator responsible for general maintenance, minor repairs and training of new operators.

Scope and Content: Subseries consists of records pertaining to the Lower Mainland Association of Friends of the Carousel, including scrapbooks, receipts, statements, publications and information on the restoration of the Parker Carousel by the Association.

History: The No. 119 “Carry-Us-All” Carousel was built in 1912 by C.W. Parker, an amusement ride manufacturer in Leavenworth, Kansas. Fred Leggett bought No.119 for “Lone Star” Amusement Co. in Houston Texas, but it was returned to the Parker Factory in 1915 for reasons unknown. Back at the factory it was upgraded from Standard style to Superior and electrified. The carousel was used in the San Francisco area until 1936 when it was shipped to “Happyland” in Vancouver’s Hastings Park (home of the Pacific National Exhibition) then passed to “Playland” at Hastings Park in 1957. In 1988 the Carousel was scheduled to be broken up and sold at auction. Concerned citizens formed the Lower Mainland Association of the Friends of the Vancouver Carousel to save it. Through fundraising the Friends of the Carousel were able to acquire the carousel. Between 1990 and 1993 Friends of the Carousel were able to completely restore, repaint and rebuild the carousel. The City of Burnaby, Province of British Columbia and Friends of the Carousel contributed to the construction of a new building at Burnaby Village Museum to house it. Enterprising volunteers salvaged the maple hardwood gymnasium floor at the Oakalla penitentiary just before it was demolished and used it to rebuild the carousel platform. The association also acquired and restored a Wurlitzer 146B organ. On March 27, 1993, No. 119 moved to the Don Wrigley Pavilion at the Burnaby Village Museum, the Pavilion having been named after the president of the Friends of the Carousel for his coordination of the restoration project. Mrs. Norvie Frame, daughter original owner Fred Leggett, came with her family from Texas to attend the official opening. The Association created the Burnaby Village Museum exhibit “The Story of Parker #119”, the video “Labour of Love: The Saving of Number 119”, and their accompanying publications.

Description: Part of the 1912 C.W. Parker Carousel. Carousel horse No. 4, "Firefly." "Stargazer" style Flag horse jumper, head tossed high, ears back, mouth open. Colour: Black and white Ovaro Pinto. Look to make out the dalmatian dog head (the traditional fireman's dog) in the markings on the neck. Other shapes also hidden there. Variegated mane and tail, white blaze and stockings. Trappings: Red-toned stippled saddle and fender, with gold trim. American shield on back of cantle, blue blanket with red trim and gold fringe. American flag on hip area (36 of 48 stars showing) Red breast collar, blue trim. White, brown and bluish feathers hanging from breast collar. Sapphire blue jewel in gold breast plate.
