The "u" shaped section of the shaft is called a shaft bearing: each carousel horse is hung from the shaft bearing with a pony hook. When the carousel is in motion, the crankshaft rotates, which creates the "jumping" motion of the horses. The brackets that connect the crankshaft to the sweeps are also visible in this photograph.
