- Immigrating from Hong Kong to Canada as a child, Alfred Woo easily assimilated into the Canadian way of life at an early age and has enjoyed the best of both worlds. A law graduate, his professional career included service as a Crown Counsel, securities administrator, corporate executive, and as private practitioner. He also served in the Canadian Army (Reserve Force) as a legal officer and an artillery officer before being honorably discharged at the rank of Major. A Burnaby resident for over 30 years, and now retired, he continues to volunteer helping seniors, a community service club, and a veterans group.

- History
- In February 2001, Council formally approved the City's Corporate Records Management Program. The Program manages the creation, maintenance, and disposition of the records of the City of Burnaby. An integral part of that program is the Records Classification System and Retention Schedule (RCSRS), which provides standardized classification codes among all municipal departments and identifies the retention periods for all classes of records created or received by the City. The City Archives, opened November 10, 2001, is the official repository for all inactive civic records of permanent administrative, legal, fiscal, historical, evidential, or informational value to the City of Burnaby. The Archives is guided by its Mandate and Acquisition Policy which was first adopted by Council on August 13, 2001, and revised on September 18, 2006 to include the acquisition and preservation of private (non-governmental) records that compliment the official city records and enhance understanding of the history and development of Burnaby. - Arlene Belcastro tells the story of her grandmother, Dakota Lamb, who was born to Norwegian parents in the late 1800s in North Dakota. She moved to Milk River, Alberta around 1900, then took up residence in Carmengay, Alberta during the Depression where she raised four children as a single mother after her husband left. She supported her family by taking in boarders, ironing, and working as a midwife. The family later moved to Edmonton, where she was one of the first Avon ladies. In 1944, she was able to take a job as a pastry cook up north during the construction of the Alaska Highway and save enough money to purchase her own home. The film includes Arlene’s memories of visiting Grandma Lamb’s rustic cabin at Baptiste Lake north of Edmonton, Alberta. Starting at age 6, Arlene and her cousin, Donna, spent every summer with Grandma Lamb. The rustic cabin did not have running water or electricity, so the girls learned about kerosene lamps, wood stoves, and using a cold storage trunk for refrigeration. Grandma Lamb taught them life-skills through chores such as gathering kindling and tending the garden, and encouraged their independence. Arlene recalls that they also learned by example from Grandma Lamb, who instilled a respect for nature and for other people and never complained about life or what material things she didn’t have. She was a resilient, respectful, and wise role model.

- Arlene Belcastro was born in Edmonton and attended H.A. Gray School and Victoria High School, where she completed commercial courses. She was married in Edmonton at age 19, and moved to Calgary after her eldest child was born. She learned to ride a horse at Elkana Ranch at Bragg Creek while living in Calgary. Following the birth of her second son, the family briefly lived in Nassau. Arlene returned to Edmonton after her marriage ended, and soon moved to the Vancouver/Burnaby area where she has lived for more than 40 years. At age 50, Arlene began acting and is currently a student of drumming, a community volunteer, and an avid traveler.

The building was set up as a permanent exhibit on site at Burnaby Village Museum. The majority of the records were created by museum and City of Burnaby staff. - History
- The Bell's Dry Goods building was built in 1922 by Clifford Tuckey with a small lean to structure on the back housing a kitchen and bedroom. The building was located on the northwest corner of Sixth Street and Thirteenth Avenue in Burnaby. William Bell (1884-1952) and Flora Bell (nee Connell) (1889-1953) immigrated to Burnaby from Scotland between 1917 and 1918. In about 1924, the building was purchased by William and Flora Bell. Flora operated "Bell's Dry Goods" store out of the building and the couple lived at the back of the store. William worked as a driver for a local lumber mill. Bell's Dry Goods was in operation in this one storey building between 1925 and 1937 with the building address, 1314 Sixth Street (later 7695 Sixth Street). In 1927, they moved to a house located on Thirteenth Avenue while they converted the back of the store to include the East Burnaby Post Office. In 1937, the Bells moved the one storey "Bell's Dry Goods" building a little further north and built a two storey building on the corner. Flora continued to operate Bell's Dry Goods on the ground level of the new building until 1941 and the couple lived upstairs. The new two storey building assumed the address of 1314 Sixth Street (later 7695 Sixth Street) and the older one storey building obtained a new address of 1316 Sixth Street (later 7685 Sixth Street). The East Burnaby Post Office continued to operate at 1314 Sixth Street until about 1954. On December 1, 1937, Maurice Whitechurch moved his Whitechurch Hardware store into the one storey building which he rented out from the Bells. In 1943, Maurice Whitechurch purchased the building from the Bells and Whitechurch Hardware store continued to operated at this location until the Spring of 1973. In June 1973, Mr. Fergie Will bought the store and the building was donated to Heritage Village (Burnaby Village Museum). In August 1974, the building was relocated from it's location on Sixth Avenue to Heritage Village. Sometime prior to the move, the extension at the rear of the building was removed. After the building was moved to Heritage Village, some exterior repairs were completed including the installation of exterior siding at the rear of the building and installation of large wood sliding door. The building opened as a carpentry shop exhibit in 1975. In March 1976, an extension at the rear of the building was rebuilt by museum staff. The building underwent several repairs and restorations between 1992 and 1996 and was closed to the public. Due to structural problems, the extension was demolished in 1992. Between 1993 and 1996, the building underwent a series of exterior and interior structural repairs to restore it to Bell's Dry Goods store which included the rebuilding of the extension at the rear of the building and the moving of the building onto a new foundation. The newly restored building opened as Bell's Dry Goods store (exhibit) on August 6, 1996. On November 23, 1992, the building was designated a heritage building under Heritage Designation Bylaw 1992, Bylaw Number 9807.

- Teresa Florkow was born on October 11 1932 in Natal BC (now Sparwood BC). Her parents, Ann and John Bowman had another three girls (Betty Ann, Marilyn and Frances) before moving to Burnaby in 1945. They settled at 1713 Frederick Avenue at Rumble Street. Teresa attended Nelson Avenue School and then Burnaby South High School. After graduation, she worked at the Royal Bank at Kingsway and McKay for 7 years. She married Arc Florkow on July 14 1952. The couple moved to 5887 Berwick Street in Burnaby and had three children: Chris, Jill and Gail. Arc worked as a furniture painter until he bought a tugboat in 1975.

- History
- The Community Heritage Commission was established in 1988 by Burnaby City Council under the provisions of the B.C. Heritage Conservation Act. The role of the Commission has been to advise Council on various heritage matters referred to it by Council. The Commission has evolved to oversee programs and projects that support heritage conservation in Burnaby as guided by the Official Community Plan. One of the goals of the plan is to provide opportunities for increased awareness and the conservation of the City's unique natural, cultural, archaeological and built heritage. In 2017, the Community Heritage Commission received funding from Burnaby City Council and the BC/Canada 150 project to launch a Heritage Interpretive Plaque Program to celebrate and mark Burnaby's 125 anniversary. The project was launched by the Planning and Building Department in partnership with the Burnaby Village Museum which included the development of online video vignettes to accompany the markers in a new expanded interpretive program.

- Series consists of Burnaby Mountain Oral History Project records which were created under the direction of the Community Heritage Commission. The series consists of interviews with 23 people interviewed during 18 sessions which were conducted between September 2015 and January 2016. The purpose of the project was to explore the history of the Burnaby Mountain area which includes the Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area and Centennial Pavilion area, Simon Fraser University, the Trans Mountain tank farm, neighbourhoods such as Lochdale, Forest Hills, and Forest Grove, and watersheds such as the Stoney Creek watershed. A diverse group was interviewed who covered a wide range of topics such as recreation and other uses made of the mountain, the history of setting aside and managing parkland on the mountain, the mountain as home, and values assigned to the natural features of the mountain. The people interviewed included past and present employees of Burnaby's Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department; retired Burnaby city planning staff; retired Simon Fraser University professors; members of the Burnaby Mountain Biking Association, Burnaby Mountain Preservation Society, and the Stoney Creek Environment Committee; people who lived or live in adjacent neighbourhoods and have memories of the mountain from the 1930s onwards; past and present city council members and citizen representatives on the Parks Commission. The interviews range from 1 to 2 1/2 hours in length and cover a time period primarily between 1930 and 2015.

- The Burnaby Neighbourhood Speaker Series is a public programming series which began in 2014. The series is presented in partnership between the Burnaby Public Library and the Burnaby Village Museum. Presentations regarding a range of historical, cultural and contemporary topics related to Burnaby are provided at various Burnaby Public Library locations. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions in 2020-2021, these talks became available virtually utilizing the cloud based Zoom video communications platform and Facebook live platforms. This format has continued into 2022 to reach a broader audience.
