- Film footage of an interview conducted and recorded by Burnaby Village Museum curator Colin Stevens with Burnaby residents gathered inside of Bell's Dry Goods store on the site of Burnaby Village Museum. Burnaby residents were customers and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Bell and included: Jim Agnew; Mary Agne; May and Bill Long; Mel Coutts; Lois Coutts; Isobel Coutts and Aubrey Coutts. These residents all lived in the area of the building and knew the owners between 1920 and 1950. Residents recall the layout and furnishings of the interior of the building when it was operated as Bell's Dry Goods (1925 to 1937), Jean's Grocery Store [?], Whitechurch Hardware (1937-1973). Colin Stevens is particularly interested in gathering information on the layout and furnishings in Bell's since the museum intends to restore the building and display to the 1920s era.

Leggett during their visit to Vancouver to attend the opening of the newly restored carousel. They are shown being interviewed, sightseeing, and being presented with a copy of the film “The Story of Parker no. 119”. BCTV news coverage of the opening ceremony is included along with clips of volunteers restoring and working on the carousel. Film locations include Burnaby, the Burnaby Village Museum and Vancouver. The film was dedicated to the hundreds of volunteers of the Friends of the Carousel.

The video consists of 812 images from the Burnaby Image Bank which are indexed by Communities, Neighbourhoods, Subjects and Names. The indexes are provided at both the beginning and end of the video with photographs dispersed in between. An introduction is provided by Simon Fraser University Archivist, Jim Ross. The video was made available for public purchase and viewing on Video Home System (VHS) format and distributed to each Burnaby school and branch of the Burnaby Public Library for information and research purposes.

Film footage documents various stages of restoration of the carousel including, the carousel horses, the "doghouse" and Wurlitzer. There is some narration by the camera person but sound quality is poor and segments contain ambient noise. The footage is divided into segments marked by dates, visible in the bottom right corner. Dates range between April 1991 and March 1993. Some of this unedited footage could have been used for the Burnaby Village Museum film "Labour of Love - The Saving of Number 119" (see BV020.4.28). 00:00 - 03:23: Apr. 20, 1991 : Volunteers and staff working on the restoration of carousel horses in the Texaco warehouse. They are busy scraping away old paint. Various horses are suspended on frames while some are laid on their sides on work benches. 03:24 - 06:15: Nov. 2 1991 : Volunteers and staff working on scraping and sanding away old layers of paint on carousel horses in the Texaco warehouse. Some horses are getting repairs. A little narrative coming from camera operator but mostly ambient sound. Pieces of the "doghouse" are also visible. 06:16 - 08:20 : Dec. 28 1991 : Horses are in various stages of restoration and repair inside the Texaco warehouse. 08:21 - 09:40 : Dec. 28, 1991 : Volunteers are gathered in a lunch room taking a break. Views of carousel horses in another room of the warehouse which have been applied with a sealer. The Worlitzer is also visible during a stage of restoration. Volunteers are gathering inside and seating themselves on horses around the carousel for the Volunteers Grand Opening. The carousel begins to move with some volunteers riding various horses while the Wurlitzer plays in the background. 1:04:10 - 1:09:44 : March 27 1993 - Carousel is officially opened. Includes interviews by curator Colin Stevens with Friends of Carousel president, Don Wrigley and Dave Zieffert, Restorator of the Wurlitzer and Gordie Ironside who helped work with the restoration. Transit Centennial and includes a voice over commentary by Frank Horne and Vic Sharman. Frank and Vic worked as motormen on the BC Electric Railway. The trams are shown travelling through Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, Surrey, North Delta, Langley, Abbotsford, and Chilliwack. The excursion train was filmed in Washington State, U.S.A. The narrators give commentary, describing the routes, landmarks of the past and present, the various kinds of trams and buses seen, drivers’ protocols, and historical information. - Burnaby Village Museum is an open air museum that represents a typical tram-stop community. Museum interpreters welcome visitors, provide demonstrations and on site programming. The museum’s collection consists of thousands of artifacts, community records as well as several original Burnaby heritage buildings, a 1912 carousel, 1912 B.C. Electric Railway interurban tram, a Chinese Market Garden and Indigenous Learning House and Matriarch's Garden. In 1990, the Corporation of the District of Burnaby assumed the operation and management of Burnaby Village Museum from the Burnaby Village Museum Association. Burnaby Village Museum (formerly named Heritage Village) was originally created by the Burnaby Centennial '71 Committee in 1971 as a commemorative project for British Columbia's Centennial. A concept for an open-air museum was developed near Deer Lake on Districts Lots 79/ 85. The official sod turning for Heritage Village took place on the site on April 11, 1971. In the spring of 1971, a museum director and curator were hired to oversee the development of the project and the acquisition of artifacts with funding from the Parks and Recreation Commission. The Century Park Museum Association (later named Burnaby Village Museum Association) was formed on October 26, 1971 as a governing body for Heritage Village Museum. The museum opened on November 19, 1971 with Mayor Bob Pritte and Canada's Governor General Roland Michener. IN July 1972, the museum opened for it's first public season. The Village was described as depictive of the 1890 to 1920 era of the lower mainland. Since 1990, the site expanded from it’s original four acre size to it's current ten acres. In the 1990s and early 2000s staff and volunteers created exhibits and programs about Burnaby with an emphasis on the 1920s. Since it's 40th anniversary in 2011, the museum has implemented changes to make the museum more interactive and inclusive in telling the story of Burnaby's history.

- Collection consists of a selection of Oakalla correctional facility records including reports, correspondence, photographs and a video tour of the death row incarceration cells inside Oakalla Prison taken by Burnaby Village Museum curator after the facility was closed. Most of the photographs document Oakalla Prison in 1991 and were taken during the Open House event or when Burnaby Village Museum staff were granted access to retreive items prior to demolition. A small selection of facility photographs of site and staff are also included.

- History
- The Oakalla Prison Farm (also known as the Lower Mainland Regional Correctional Centre) was a model prison farm on 185 acres of land next to Deer Lake in Burnaby. The Oakalla Prison Farm opened in 1912 and was initially designed to hold 150 men and 50 women. By the 1950s, the population was well over one thousand. The prison included a working farm which included a dairy, vegetable gardens and livestock. In 1959 the last execution in British Columbia took place at Oakalla. Following a riot and mass escape in the late 1980s, poor conditions, and public outcry, Oakalla closed down in 1991. In the fall of 1991, the prison was opened up to the public whereby tours were conducted of the site. Not long after, buildings were demolished and a residential housing development took it's place. A playground now sits on the former site of the main building. In 1991, staff from Burnaby Village Museum were granted access, documenting the site prior to it's demolition. Many Oakalla artifacts and records were salvaged and accessioned into the Burnaby Village Museum's permanent collection.

- Interviewee biography: Kanwal Singh Neel was born in Mombasa, Kenya in 1953 and immigrated with his family to Canada in 1969. For the first few weeks after immigrating the family stayed at the Sikh Temple on Second Avenue before moving into a house which they rented. Kanwal attended Kitsilano Secondary School and later transferred to Steveston High School when his family moved to Richmond. In 1972, Kanwal and friends formed a bhangra group "Punjab Cultural Association" and in 1974 they performed at the World Exposition in Spokane, Washington. The group performed at various venues including the Pacific National Exhibition and other cities in the Province. In 1973, Kanwal was an officiate during the Canada Summer Games at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby. Kanwal obtained a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from University of British Columbia in computer science and mathematics and got his first teaching job in 1977. In 1978, he was an officiate of the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Alberta. Over the next ten years he devoted himself to becoming an educator and during this time he became more involved with the B.C. Math Teachers Association. Kanwal and his wife Nancy married in 1982 and have two daughters. In the early 1990's, Kanwal joined Simon Fraser University as a faculty associate to work, train and mentor student teachers. Kanwal became President of the B.C. Math Teachers Association and travelled throughout the province to help solve issues being faced by students. In 1993, he co-hosted a TV show "Math Shop" on The Knowledge Network and he later co-authored a textbook series titled "Math Makes Sense". Kanwal continued to advance his knowledge in the field of mathematics obtaining a Doctorate from Simon Fraser University in 2008. Kanwal developed his doctoral work in Haida Gwaii, studying the mathematics that the Haida peoples used in day to day life, applying the applications and integrating the mathematics concepts with their cultural knowledge. Kanwal also worked with the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation and the Stó:lō Nation in helping to develop resources for them. Kanwal has been recognized with various awards and honours including being awarded an honorary doctorate by Kwantlen Polytechnic University and in 2017 as an inductee in the Sports Wall of Fame in Richmond for his outstanding contribution to amateur sport as an International Athletics Official. Since retirement, Kanwal continues to be involved in a project at Simon Fraser University "Friends of Simon" where university students go out and mentor and tutor immigrant and refugee children from South Asia and Africa and other countries. Interviewer biography: Rajdeep was born and raised in the Lower Mainland and is of Punjabi (South Asian) descent. She has an Associate of Arts degree in Asian Studies from Kwantlen Polytechnic University, a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in Anthropology from the University of British Columbia. She is a student in the Restoration of Natural Systems program at the University of Victoria. Rajdeep works at Simon Fraser University as a Program Assistant and as a researcher with the City of Burnaby. At Burnaby Village Museum, Rajdeep contributed to the exhibit “Truths Not Often Told: Being South Asian in Burnaby”.
