Series consists of records pertaining to the moving, restoration, exhibit and repair of the Bell's Dry Goods store and Whitechurch Hardware store building that was relocated from Sixth Avenue to Heritage Village (Burnaby Village Museum) in 1974. The building was set up as a permanent exhibit on site at Burnaby Village Museum. The majority of the records were created by museum and City of Burnaby staff. Series is arranged into four subseries: 1) Restoration, upgrades and repairs subseries 2) Bell's building photographs subseries 3) Bell's exhibit photographs subseries 4) Bell's research files subseries
History
The Bell's Dry Goods building was built in 1922 by Clifford Tuckey with a small lean to structure on the back housing a kitchen and bedroom. The building was located on the northwest corner of Sixth Street and Thirteenth Avenue in Burnaby. William Bell (1884-1952) and Flora Bell (nee Connell) (1889-1953) immigrated to Burnaby from Scotland between 1917 and 1918. In about 1924, the building was purchased by William and Flora Bell. Flora operated "Bell's Dry Goods" store out of the building and the couple lived at the back of the store. William worked as a driver for a local lumber mill. Bell's Dry Goods was in operation in this one storey building between 1925 and 1937 with the building address, 1314 Sixth Street (later 7695 Sixth Street). In 1927, they moved to a house located on Thirteenth Avenue while they converted the back of the store to include the East Burnaby Post Office. In 1937, the Bells moved the one storey "Bell's Dry Goods" building a little further north and built a two storey building on the corner. Flora continued to operate Bell's Dry Goods on the ground level of the new building until 1941 and the couple lived upstairs. The new two storey building assumed the address of 1314 Sixth Street (later 7695 Sixth Street) and the older one storey building obtained a new address of 1316 Sixth Street (later 7685 Sixth Street). The East Burnaby Post Office continued to operate at 1314 Sixth Street until about 1954. On December 1, 1937, Maurice Whitechurch moved his Whitechurch Hardware store into the one storey building which he rented out from the Bells. In 1943, Maurice Whitechurch purchased the building from the Bells and Whitechurch Hardware store continued to operated at this location until the Spring of 1973. In June 1973, Mr. Fergie Will bought the store and the building was donated to Heritage Village (Burnaby Village Museum). In August 1974, the building was relocated from it's location on Sixth Avenue to Heritage Village. Sometime prior to the move, the extension at the rear of the building was removed. After the building was moved to Heritage Village, some exterior repairs were completed including the installation of exterior siding at the rear of the building and installation of large wood sliding door. The building opened as a carpentry shop exhibit in 1975. In March 1976, an extension at the rear of the building was rebuilt by museum staff. The building underwent several repairs and restorations between 1992 and 1996 and was closed to the public. Due to structural problems, the extension was demolished in 1992. Between 1993 and 1996, the building underwent a series of exterior and interior structural repairs to restore it to Bell's Dry Goods store which included the rebuilding of the extension at the rear of the building and the moving of the building onto a new foundation. The newly restored building opened as Bell's Dry Goods store (exhibit) on August 6, 1996. On November 23, 1992, the building was designated a heritage building under Heritage Designation Bylaw 1992, Bylaw Number 9807.

The five films are titled; "Eileen Daily: Taking a stand"; "Burnaby’s Chinese Canadian Market Gardens"; "Saving Burnaby Lake"; "Saving the Salmon: the Brunette River Story" and "Troubled Times: Burnaby in the 1930s".
History
The Community Heritage Commission was established in 1988 by Burnaby City Council under the provisions of the B.C. Heritage Conservation Act. The role of the Commission has been to advise Council on various heritage matters referred to it by Council. The Commission has evolved to oversee programs and projects that support heritage conservation in Burnaby as guided by the Official Community Plan. One of the goals of the plan is to provide opportunities for increased awareness and the conservation of the City's unique natural, cultural, archaeological and built heritage. In 2017, the Community Heritage Commission received funding from Burnaby City Council and the BC/Canada 150 project to launch a Heritage Interpretive Plaque Program to celebrate and mark Burnaby's 125 anniversary. The project was launched by the Planning and Building Department in partnership with the Burnaby Village Museum which included the development of online video vignettes to accompany the markers in a new expanded interpretive program.

Records include correspondence, photographs, documentation regarding travel within China along with export and import information, contracts, financial reports, credit applications, Chinese trade fair information and ephemera.
History
Kelly Douglas and Company Limited was founded in 1896 as a wholesale grocery business. In 1946, its headquarters moved from Vancouver to Burnaby and a manufacturing plant and warehouse were built on the site at 4700 Kingsway. During the nineteen seventies, Kelly Douglas and Company Limited and the Produce Department of Western Commodities Limited were located on this site. In 1986, the building was demolished and the produce department of Kelly Douglas was relocated to 6451 Telford Burnaby and the head office to 808 Nelson Street, Vancouver. In the nineteen seventies, Cecil Lee worked as a produce buyer for Kelly Douglas & Company Ltd.and Western Commodities. In the mid-1970s, Lee was asked to oversee the import of Chinese mandarin oranges into Canada. Until that time, mandarin oranges had come from Japan and were sold in the winter, especially at Christmas. When the Japanese market could no longer keep up with demand, Kelly Douglas & Company looked to China. The company relied on Lee’s cultural knowledge to build this very profitable part of their business. Cecil Lee designed the cardboard Chinese mandarin orange box to replace wooden container

Series consists of records created and adminstered by the Burnaby Village Museum pertaining to the history, acquistion, restoration, preservation and documentation of the C.W. Parker no. 119 carousel. Series have been arranged into the following subseries: 1) Carousel photographs subseries 2) Carousel sound recordings and films subseries
History
"The C.W. Parker no. 119 carousel was built in 1912 in Leavenworth Kansas by the Charles Wallace Parker Company. It was the one hundred and nineteenth carousel made by the company and was so named the C.W. Parker no. 119 carousel. In 1913 the carousel was sold to Mr. F.K. Leggett of Houston Texas for $5,886.00 and was originally equipped with a steam engine and ""wishbones/grass-hopper/jumping horse"" mechanisms. It toured Texas for two years with the Lone Star Circus until 1915 when the machine was shipped back to the factory. It is believed that the machine was rebuilt by the factory with fancier horses and heavier rounding boards referred to as the “Superior” style. Some of the horses were built around 1917 and some between 1920 and 1922. The factory records consulted do not tell for certain where the machine went between 1915 and 1936, possibly to San Jose, California from 1918 until 1922 and then to San Francisco California, or Tacoma, Washington. Accounts from the family of James W. "Jimmy" Robertson, supervisor of rides for Happyland, tell of him travelling with his wife Dora Robertson to Washington, Oregon and California in the fall of 1935 or early 1936 to pick up a new carousel for Happyland. By May 1936, the C.W. Parker no. 119 carousel was in operation in Happlyland inside Hastings Park. The Parker #119 carousel was installed in a pavilion in Happyland which had been built in 1928 by a rival company (Philadelphia Toboggan Company - P.T.C.) and was located next to the "Shoot the Chutes" ride in Hastings Park. Here it remained until Happyland was demolished in 1957. The C.W. Parker no. 119 carousel was then moved to a new small pavilion in Playland until that too was demolished in 1972. From 1972 to 1990, the C.W. Parker no. 119 carousel was operated outdoors inside Playland, and was put away each winter. In 1989 it was announced that the carousel would be sold off horse by horse at an auction in New York. Venus Solano and Doug McCallum and other local people came together to save the carousel and formed The Lower Mainland Association of Friends of the Vancouver Carousel (also known as "Friends of the Carousel"). The first directors of the society consisted of, President and Chairman, Venus Solano; Secretary, Doug McCallum; Director, Keith Jamieson and Director, Nina Freid Rhodes. In May 1989, the Friends of the Carousel approached the Burnaby Village Museum Association who agreed to provide a home for the carousel, pending the approval of Burnaby Municipal Council. Don Wrigley who was president of the Burnaby Village Museum Association joined the board of The Friends of the Carousel as a liaison. The Friends of the Carousel first acquired two horses from the carousel, who were named Julius and Belle. These two carousel horses were used in fundraising over the summer of 1990, at which time the carousel was operating again for a short time inside Playland. The carousel horse named Julius was restored by William Dentzel III (a descendant of one of North America’s original carousel manufacturers) and the carousel horse named Belle was partially stripped and repaired. These carousel horses served as before and after examples of restoration. In June 1990 Don Wrigley was elected as president of The Friends of the Carousel and they set about raising the $350,000 to purchase the carousel and begin restoration work. With a lot of hard work, the help of the Government of British Columbia and the support of the Municipality of Burnaby, the carousel was purchased. Funds were also raised by The Friends of the Carousel to pay for the restoration, and Burnaby agreed to build a new pavilion for it as a Centennial project. Keith Jamieson, a carousel expert, was brought in to coordinate the rebuilding project and restoration work. The Centennial Parker Carousel (C.W. Parker no. 119 carousel) and the Don Wrigley Pavilion where the carousel is housed, opened at Burnaby Village Museum on March 25, 1993.

History
The Elders Digital Storytelling project was called "Sharing Our Stories" and was a project completed by SFU Professor David Kaufman and Postdoctoral Scholar Ann Nguyen. The overall goal of the project was to use digital storytelling to encourage communication, socialization and development of English language, media and technology skills for seniors and immigrants. The project asked Burnaby seniors to write a short film about their lives and then to record using video software. Sharing Our Stories became part of a federally funded Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Partnership Grant in 2014 along with AGE-WELL NCE grants and was hosted by the City of Burnaby (BVM) and the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University. BVM was given permission to have a copy of some of the films for their collection.
