History
Andrew Martin Johnson was born in Norway in 1861 and immigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia in 1886. His wife Margaret Sloane was born in Ireland. Margaret and Andrew Johnson's eldest child, Edward Sloane, was born June 10, 1901 but did not survive infancy. Their second child, Andrew Sloane, was born in 1906. Andrew Martin was a major landowner in Burnaby, at one time owning each of the four corners of Royal Oak and Kingsway and many of the adjacent properties. He made his fortune as a partner in the firm of Atkins & Johnson, a leading transportation company in Vancouver which later became the Mainland Transfer Company. In 1910, Andrew Martin purchased Burnaby's Royal Oak Hotel. He soon acquired the property on the opposite corner to build their family home, called "Glenedward" after their eldest son. He owned and operated the Royal Oak Hotel until his death on September 18, 1934. In 1943 Margaret sold Glenedward. The building has since been converted twice: first into the Royal Oak Funeral Chapel and then into the Johnson House Korean Restaurant. Andrew Sloane Johnson attended Kingsway West School and Britannia High School before earning a Bachelor's of Business Administration at the University of Washington in 1930. He lived at Glenedward until moving to Washington for school.

History
The North Burnaby Kiwanis Club was first organized on May 31, 1949. The club was officially incorporated in 1954 with W.G. Switzer as its first president. The territorial limits of the club were of Burnaby from north of the Grandview highway to the easterly limits of the municipality, using the Great Northern Railway (G.N.R.) right-of-way as their division line. Membership consisted of men in good character and community standing, residing, having interest in, or engaged in recognised lines of business, agricultural, institutional and professional life within the territorial limits of the club. The North Burnaby Kiwanis Club’s goals were: to give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than to the material values of life; to encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships; to promote the adoption and application of higher social, business and professional standards; to develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship; to provide, through this club, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build a better community; to cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and good will. The final meeting of the North Burnaby Kiwanis Club was held January 17, 1977.

History
The Capitol Hall Community Association was formed in 1912, with meetings held in a machine shop located south of Hastings Street. By 1923, the Association had moved to the original Howard Avenue School at Howard and Francis, but the building was destroyed by fire in 1924. A new hall was erected south of Hastings Street in 1926 and was used for Association activities until 1943 when it was also destroyed by fire. From 1943 until late 1947, Capitol Hill Community Association meetings were held in a variety of places, including the United Church Hall, Mrs. Wilson’s house on Ellesmere, Capitol Hill School, Harry Royle’s Store and Mrs. Wood’s house on North Warwick. Various plans and sketches for a new hall were discussed, including one by architect Harold Collerne, but it was turned down. By June of 1944, members decided on the Howard Avenue site on Dynes Park, north of Hastings Street. Two applications for building permits were turned down. In 1946, the Municipal Clerk finally requested tenders for the erection of the hall. In 1947, a "temporary” hall was built on the present site and remains there to this day. Planning and construction was carried out with George Green as Chairman of the Building Committee and William James Dynes as Foreman. The members were in the new hall by December 1947.

History
The Central Burnaby Ratepayers and Citizens Association was incorporated as a Society on November 21, 1944. The Assocation operated out of the Douglas Road School with membership open to all ratepayers and bona fide residents of Central Burnaby. In the beginning, the Association had the objective of developing interest in local municipal affairs in cooperation with the Council of Burnaby, and to promote the social and cultural life of the community. By 1964, the Association's objective was to keep the citizens informed on subjects of local interest, to enquire into local problems, and, if necessary, to petition Council.

History
Thomas Blake and his wife Gertrude came to Burnaby in 1921 with their three children: Thomas "Tom", Susie and Frederick "Fred" (b. 1912). They lived at 4456 Pandora street, owning that lot and the adjoining 66 foot lot on the west. The Municipality cleared a trail, later putting down a one-plank sidewalk and bringing in a half-inch water line for the family. The Blake family lived in two wall tents for a few years while they cleared their land and built their house. In 1921 at the age of nine, Fred Blake attended Gilmore School where he learned about different woods and how to use hand tools. In 1927, he attended North Burnaby High School in a commercial course were he learned typing, shorthand, book-keeping a commercial law. Throughout his teenage years, Fred worked at Armour Photo Finishing, developing rolls of film and collecting and delivering the films and finished prints. Thomas Blake worked part-time for the Burnaby Advertiser and part-time for the Vancouver Sun to pay his way through university and become a Burnaby school teacher. In 1927, at the age of sixteen, Fred began his firefighting career as a volunteer, with the first major fire of his career taking place December 31, 1927 at the 4600 block of Albert Street. He continued as a volunteer until 1934 when he went to the logging camps as a steam fireman in the Queen Charlotte Islands and on the coast. In the early 1930s, Fred was a member of the Army of the Common Good, and with the falling crew cut second growth timber on Capitol Hill for firewood to be shared with other members. The Army also produced over 125 tons of vegetables from its own gardens to feed children and youth who were near starvation from lack of adequate relief funds from the municipality. The Army was in operations for ten years and during that time the members organised the Credit Union movement of British Columbia and drew up the Credit Union act thorough the Vancouver Co-operative Council. They also started Co-Op stores and the Co-Op Wholesale Society. During this time, while on Relief (now welfare) Fred also worked for the municipality on the two projects of the clearing of Confederation Park and the clearing of Lougheed Highway. Fred re-joined the Burnaby fire department on April 1, 1939, as a paid member at No. 1 Hall. He came up through the ranks to become Training Officer for the department in 1949 and full time training officer with the rank of District Chief in 1952. Fred was promoted to Assistant Chief in 1966. He retired from service March 1, 1972.

History
Wesley Gardiner Morris was born in Summerside Prince Edward Island in 1884; his wife Laura Maude Weegar was born in Maxville, Ontario in 1886. Wesley graduated from McGill University in 1914, becoming a doctor, and received a gold medal in Chemistry. The couple was married in Maxville, Ontario in 1914 and lived in their first home in Chauvin, Alberta before moving to Burnaby in 1916. They lived on Imperial Street until their new home at 4265 Trafalgar Street (now 4241 Maywood Street) was built. Dr. Wesley Morris practiced medicine at his office at the corner of Kingsway and Sussex in part of Miss George’s Drugstore. During and following the Depression years, Dr. Morris was often paid in kind by his patients or they would pay off their bills by assisting with jobs around the family home. The couple lived in the home on Trafalgar Street raising their six daughters: Margaret, Betty, Dorothy, Jessie, Gertrude and Muriel until the Depression when they were forced to sell their home and move to ‘the ranch’ on Marine Drive. The ranch covered 13 acres of property on either side of Marine Drive from Boundary Road east including a ravine with a creek. Dr. Morris was known for his skill in setting fractures and due to his expertise he was called to an accident in the 1940s at the McMillan Bloedel mill on the Fraser River. Except for Gertrude (Ramage) all of their daughters graduated from Burnaby South High School. Following graduation from high school, Margaret (Sheldon) completed a business course, while both Betty (Purrot) and Dorothy (Johston) became nurses. Jessie (Hunter) joined the R.C.A.F. and after learning Morse code was posted to communications. Gertrude taught piano lessons and later received her real estate license. All of the girls were married in the 1950s and moved away from the property on Marine Drive with the exception of Muriel who was still in high school. Laura suddenly took ill in 1945 and died. Soon after her passing, Wesley purchased a lot at 4648 Marine Drive (DL 175) and built a small two bedroom home for himself and daughter Muriel. The old family home was rented, then sold, and later demolished around 1980. Dr. Wesley Morris died in 1960 and was buried alongside his wife Laura at Ocean View Memorial Cemetery in Burnaby. After her father died, Muriel continued to live in the small house later marrying Tom Di Guistini who settled there with her. Tom died in 1981 just two years before Muriel’s retirement as the secretary of Magee Secondary School in Vancouver. Soon after retirement, Muriel sold their home on Marine Drive and moved to a condominium near Central Park.

The Clef Society of Burnaby was incorporated on February 8, 1949, with original subscribers Elizabeth Dawson, Lilian Haste, Mona Weeks, Emily Scott, and Eleanor Cailes. As a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering music appreciation and music advancement in Burnaby, and to promoting musical instruction and education and encouraging outstanding musical talent, the Society created musical evenings in homes, public recitals and concerts, children's plays, light operas, and scholarship competitions.

The Victorian Order of Nurses for Canada is a non-profit charitable organization created for the purposes of home care and social services established in 1898 to perpetuate the memory of Victoria the Good. Lady Aberdeen, founding president of the National Council of Women and wife of Canadian Governor General Lord Aberdeen, was a great believer in the need for a nursing service in Canada, particularly for the less fortunate and recommended the organization be established. The Burnaby Branch of the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) was established in 1912 with Miss Colhoun as its first nurse.

History
Milton "Milt" Waller Knight was born in Canada circa 1904. His wife Virginia Harrington was born in Duluth, Minnesota circa 1905 and lived most of her life in Canada. Virginia was the first person in British Columbia to breed budgies when she began in 1932 and by 1939 she and her husband created the first crested budgie in the world. By 1942, Virginia was also housing two-hundred and fifty birds at the home of her mother, Mrs. N.M. Herington, which was located at 1775 West 13th Avenue in Burnaby. Milton and Virginia Knight moved into their own home during the war years but, as they could not get their large aviary moved, they were forced to sell their crested birds. When they started up in their birds again, they obtained some of their crested back. By 1948 they had created two types of crested: those with a miniature cockatiel crest and those with a crest like a crested canary. By 1950 they had created the crested in over twelve colours of budgie, including cobalt and yellow-wing greens. The Knights lived together at 3718 Sperling Avenue (later renumbered 5255 Sperling Avenue) and opened Lakeview Aviaries on their one acre property at Deer Lake where Virginia specialized in budgies (Budgerigars) and bred the first albino in Canada and the first crested variety in the world. She kept Java rice birds, button quail, red factor canaries, cockatiels, finches, love birds and twelve varieties of budgerigar. She was a member of the British Columbia Budgerigar and Foreign Bird Society. The facilities at Lakeview Aviaries included two heated aviary cages and three outdoor flight cages constructed by Milton. Lakeview housed the only "hospital" facilities in the city for cage birds, which featured an electrically heated, thermostatically controlled hospital cage. Virginia, known in the community as “the Bird Doctor” nursed many sick birds back to health free of charge for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or SPCA. The Knights often donated their trained birds to sick and injured children, for Virginia believed, “Budgies do wonders for the kiddies. They make them forget their troubles and of course a happy mental outlook is a definite aid to better physical health.” The couple’s personal pets included eight different types of parrot, three talking budgies, a dancing bare-eyes cockatoo, three talking cockatiel, and “Hoppy” her pet owl. By 1952, they had a toucan and a macaw as pets. In later years, they added two small dogs. By 1965, Milton had over 25 years of service as a truck driver at the Vancouver Service Department. He was also an avid collector of antique watches and clocks. He reconditioned the timepieces, systematically restoring them to their original condition. He was a member of the National Association of Clock and Watch Collectors. Milt also treasured old music boxes and restored their large metal discs and rolls to “as new” condition. Milton Knight died March 7, 1966 at 62 years of age. Virginia Knight lived alone at 5755 Sperling Avenue after her husband’s death and continued her work at the Lakeview Aviary where she “doctored 700-800 [birds] a year free of charge (except medicine) and gave SPCA donations up to $1000 a year.” Virginia Knight passed away November 10, 1987 at 82 years of age.

History
Gustav and Aune Rintanen came to Vancouver from a mixed farm on the prairies in 1936 with the hopes of finding employment. The couple had two children: nine year old Aili (later Topalian) and eight year old Trudi (later Tuomi), when they moved to a “squatters shack” at North Burnaby’s waterfront Crabtown community in 1937. They paid 50 dollars for their two-room cabin, which was built on a platform and supported by pilings. Though the squatters’ homes that ran along the Inlet were commonly referred to as shacks and Crabtown a slum, in reality they were very neatly kept homes in a community. Crabtown residents rallied together to build a water supply system and trails up the steep bluff with stairs and banisters so children could go to school safely. Before Gustav found a job, he “busied himself with fixing up the place”: building a new chimney, railing, wood shed, clothes line and sauna for his family. By 1940, he was working at the mill near Windermere pool (now New Brighton Park). Aune worked as a dishwasher and prep cook at Ye Olde English Fish and Chips in downtown Vancouver. In 1946, they sold the cabin for two hundred dollars and moved to a small house. All Crabtown squatters were eventually evicted in 1959.

History
The Burnaby Lake Men’s Community Service Club was incorporated on March 26, 1946. The aims of the club were to: cultivate a desire in our members to be of the greatest service to their community; elevate and reinforce the standards of good citizenship; foster friendship and broaden human sympathy and express them in terms of social helpfulness; and provide for wholesome recreation, education, civic and other leisure-time activities of the community. ccording to a membership drive handout produced in 1951, yearly membership was $1 and in order to be a member you had to: have been a former member; be present active member; be of the male species; or be t least mildly interested in the betterment of the social activities of your community and the promotion of good fellowship. Director of the Department of Education, Henry Hill, was the first president of the Club. Hill was also instrumental in the creation of the Valley View Community Council, which was originally made up of two appointed delegates from the Central Burnaby Ratepayers & Citizen’s Association, the Burnaby Lake Men’s Community Service Club and the Women’s Community Club. The Valley View Community Council became a Society on February 10, 1948. In 1943 Burnaby City Council pledged to help fund at least one Community Centre in each Ward of the Municipality by 50% (up to $2,500 per building). The Club had a plan to provide a Community Centre for the Central Burnaby area as early as 1945 when they visited the site allotted to the cause by the Council of Burnaby on Douglas Road at Ledger Street (later renamed and numbered 4050 Grandview Highway and later called Canada Way). They organized Annual Country Fairs, with the first held in 1944, to raise funds from community members and by November 30, 1946, they had $3,750 “held for the purpose of building a Community Centre.” The building was erected and by December of 1949 it was used for the purpose of holding a Municipal Election.
