- History
- The Burnaby Art Gallery association was founded in 1967. The purpose of the association was to present a historical and contemporary art program by local, regional, national, and international artists; facilitate the development of emerging artists; provide diverse art educational programming; acquire culturally significant works on paper. The City of Burnaby assumed management of the gallery, its collection, staff and governance in 1998, with the art gallery then taking on the added responsibility of caring for and managing the City of Burnaby’s permanent art collection. The Gallery, along with the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts and the Burnaby Village Museum in Deer Lake Park, are part of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department of the City of Burnaby. The Burnaby Art Gallery is located inside the historic Ceperley House, built by Henry and Grace Ceperley. The couple purchased a strawbery farm on the north shore of Deer Lake from George Clayton in 1909 and built their home, also known as "Fairacres", on the property in 1911. The house was designed by the English architect, R.P.S. Twizell and with its river rock veranda, beautiful hand-crafted woodwork, stained-glass and tile, remains one of the finest examples of Edwardian architecture in the Lower Mainland. Grace and Hentry Ceperley had one daughter named Ethelwyn who married James Edward Hall. Ethelwyn and James Edward Hall had three children: Edith Ceperley, James Edward "Junior," and Florence Renn. In 1917, Grace Ceperley died and left Fairacres to her husband with the stipulation that when the home was sold the proceeds would be used to build a playground for the children of Vancouver in Stanley Park. In 1939, the local Catholic Diocese funded a group of five Benedictine monks from Mount Angel, Oregon to establish a priory in the province. The monks purchased the Ceperley House for their monastery. They also built a large gymnasium on the property. After serving as a monastery, the house was used as a fraternity for some of the first students attending Simon Fraser University, and then became home to the art gallery in the 1960s. The City of Burnaby acquired the property in 1966 and the house was designated a heritage building in 1992. In 1998 the City began restoring exterior of the house and upgraded the building for improved public use. The renovations were completed in 2000, and transformed the house back to its appearance of 1911. The gymnasium built by the Benedictine monks was converted into into the James Cowan Theatre. There are two main galleries, a lounge gallery with a fireplace and easy chairs and The Shopping Bag, a gallery shop run by volunteers. The goals of the gallery are to: provide access to contemporary Canadian art, present works from the permanent collection; collect contemporary works on paper; and offer challenging and educational exhibition related programming.

- History
- In 1992, the City of Burnaby celebrated its 100th birthday. To mark the anniversary, a Centennial Committee was struck by the Mayor and Council to coordinate activities and oversee the year-long celebrations. The History and Heritage sub-committee was formed with the goal of collecting and preserving historic materials detailing the development of Burnaby. In November of 1992, the committee advertised for the submission of personal stories, photos and other memorabilia and received material from over 150 early Burnaby residents in response. Although the Centennial Committee disbanded at the end of 1992, the work that had been begun by the History and Heritage Sub-Committee continued under the direction of the Burnaby Heritage Advisory Committee (later named the Community Heritage Commission) and proceeded under its authority until the project was completed. The stories that were captured to accompany this material and the memories of some of Burnaby’s earliest residents were brought together in the form of book, published in 1994: "Burnaby Centennial Anthology: Stories of Early Burnaby".

- Frances Mabel "May" Webb was born in Cradley, England on December 5, 1872. She sailed from England to Victoria, BC with her parents, Joseph William Webb and Frances Jane Webb (nee Yapp) on the SS Lake Winnipeg in 1889. One of the few possessions that she brought with her was an old wood-rimmed bicycle which she found quite useful after her move to Burnaby. She would ride it all the way from Patterson’s Trail and Westminster Road (today’s Patterson Avenue and Kingsway) to the Woodward’s store in Vancouver where she would place her grocery order. She packed a pearl handled revolver with her in order to scare any bears she might see along her ride. In 1890, Frances married Dugald Campbell Patterson (b. 1860, d. 1931) in Victoria, BC. In 1894, the couple built a pioneer homestead and farm on five acres at what would become the north east section of Central Park. Dugald founded Vulcan Iron Works (later Dominion Bridge Company) in New Westminister in 1903, and the couple settled in the Central Park district. By 1904, the family moved to the Edmonds district where in 1909 she operated the post office that her husband founded. In 1910, they began construction of a new house, complete with tennis courts and a gazebo, on 14 acres purchased for $720. The house is now located at 7106 18th Avenue and is a dedicated heritage building. The couple had seven children: William H. "Bill", Jean, Frances Mabel Lili., Dugald C. Jr, Mary, Charles Bruce, and Alice. The Pattersons were community-minded citizens that served Burnaby through their involvement with local municipal affairs and politics. In 1909, Dugald became the first postmaster of Edmonds. He also served as a School Trustee from 1912-13 and was one of the first residents to lobby Burnaby City Council to preserve the local ravines as parks. They also helped build the Central Park Presbyterian Church, along with other pioneer families. The family name is remembered and honoured by the naming of Patterson Avenue and the Patterson SkyTrain Station located in the Metrotown area. Frances Mabel assisted her husband with an insurance and real estate company that he founded in Burnaby and New Westminster. This experience would prove invaluable, as she would later become an insurance agent for the Wawanesa Insurance Company (founded in 1896). Frances never owned an automobile, so she met her insurance clients all over Burnaby, New Westminster and Vancouver by using the Lower Mainland’s street car system. The insurance profession continued to provide her with a steady income long after her husband’s death. Frances Mabel died in New Westminster, BC on August 30, 1960. Frances Mabel Lili Patterson was born on June 9, 1905 and was the fifth child born to Dugald Campbell and Frances Mabel Patterson. She became the first PBX switchboard operator for the Municipality of Burnaby in the early 1920’s. PBX, or Private Branch Exchange, was the term used for an internal telephone system. Frances later became president of the Professional Women’s Association of New Westminster, and volunteered her time with the May Day celebrations in New Westminster. She was also a dedicated member of the Rebekah Lodge (the women’s division of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows). While in the lodge, she met her future husband, Walter Duke and they married on July 12, 1939. They couple moved to Wenatchee, Washington after getting married, and Frances relocated to Victoria after her husband died. Frances died on January 13, 1974. Doreen Nettie Patterson was born December 12, 1927, the youngest daughter of Charles Bruce Patterson and Elva Eleanore Patterson (nee Elliott). At age 23, Doreen became the first woman from BC to enlist in the new Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service and by the fall of 1951, she had become a Wren in the Royal Canadian Navy. She received her basic training at HMCS Cornwallis and became a radio intelligence operator for the wireless communications base at Naval Radio Station Coverdale near Moncton, New Brunswick. In 1953, she was chosen to serve a term at the naval base in Churchill, Manitoba. She was one of only eleven women to ever serve there. After her career in the navy, Doreen worked in the accounting division for Simpsons-Sears in Burnaby near her grandparent’s original family home at Patterson Avenue and Kingsway. Doreen married Gerard Reitsma on August 18, 1960. Doreen died on April 30, 2000.

- James Gilmore Ettinger was born in Noel Road, Nova Scotia in 1863. He worked his way across Canada with the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) and landed in New Westminster in 1888. He was one of the first men who helped log the area for the settlement that is now Burnaby. With two other men, James started a brick manufacturing plant in the area of Deer Lake. In 1889, a second brick plant was started on Brickyard Road in Surrey on the bank of the Fraser River. Martha Harriet Hembrough was born in Leeds, England in 1874 and later moved to Haney. James Gilmore and Martha married in 1890 and had seven children: Evelina "Eve" (b. August 8, 1891, d. January 1, 1976); Ella May (b. ca. 1894, d. February 1983); Leonard; George William "Bill" (b. February 18, 1899, d. November 26, 1970); Stanley (b. December 27, 1901, d. March 10, 1966); Ethel (b. ca. 1904, d. December 22, 1982); and James. On May 19, 1911, the Ettingers bought parcel Lot 8, Block C sub-division 19 and 20 of DL 95 no. 556 for $350.00. Their eldest daughter, Evelina was signed over the Deed of Land for this property on April 21, 1914. In 1919, the Ettinger family was living at 1177 19th Avenue, Edmonds, Burnaby. James worked as a Road Foreman in Edmonds, and later as ward foreman for the Municipality. Ella May married Charles Morton Marshall on July 7, 1926. Evelina married Don Digby (d. October 21, 1965) on April 30, 1930. Ethel married George H. McKennell (d. June 18, 1985) on March 16, 1931. Bill worked as a Pacific Stage Lines (PSL) bus operator who “pulled” the first bus service between Vancouver and New Westminster and between Vancouver and Chilliwack in 1924. He received a number of National Safety Council non-accident awards during his career. He married Jane Wilson on July 11, 1931. James Gilmore died on June 9, 1948 at the age of 85. Martha died on February 9, 1955 at the age of 80.

- Lillian Evelyn "Evelyn" Salisbury was born in 1915 and moved to Burnaby in 1945. She had three children with her husband Fred: Gordon, Lorne, and Karen. While living in Burnaby, she worked with the Red Cross blood donor clinic and the Burnaby Health Unit. In 1958, she participated in the Greater Vancouver Health League’s campaign for fluoridation as the Health Chairman of the Burnaby Parent-Teacher Council. Evelyn Salisbury served two-year terms as secretary, vice-president and president of the Burnaby Historical Society and spearheaded a 1985 project to record Burnaby’s historical inventory of churches, schools, industries, homes and other pre-1930 buildings. When the building of Metrotown shopping centre threatened to clear historic homes in Central Park area, the Society produced a record of the historic buildings in the area. In 1988, as president of the Burnaby Historical Society, she convinced City of Burnaby aldermen to set up a heritage advisory committee. She was appointed to the Burnaby Centennial Committee the next year and in 1990 she was named Citizen of the Year by the Burnaby City Council. During her lifetime, Evelyn Salisbury endeavoured to collect papers of historical significance. She died in 1991.

- George Alford Grant was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on June 22, 1877. In 1907, George married Alice Taylor of Stonehaven, Scotland. Three of their children were born in Edinburgh: William (b. 1908), George Jr. (b. 1910), and Herriot (b. 1912). By 1912, George Grant had secured a job in Burnaby at a law office and brought his family to join him. He eventually established his own law firm, Grant and MacDougal. While in Burnaby, Alice and George Grant had two more children, Alastair and Millie. During World War I, George served in the 11th Irish Fusiliers of Vancouver and reached the rank of Captain. Upon returning to Burnaby, George had a long and distinguished career, serving for over 43 years in both official and unofficial offices in Burnaby – a record of service for which he received both local recognition and the Order of the British Empire. Between 1921 and 1931, George sat on the Burnaby School Board and also served as the Municipal Solicitor in the 1930s. Alice Grant became a life member of the Provincial Chapter of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (as well as the Col. Hart McHarg Chapter) in 1935 and George was a Burnaby Police Magistrate for 13 years, until 1954. During this time, he was recognized for his patience and fairness and the BC Borstal Association benefited from his active interest for many years. George also served as chairman of the West Burnaby Liberal Association from 1925 to 1938, heading the New Westminster Federal Riding Association in 1938. In January 1955, he was presented with the Gold Key award by the Municipality of Burnaby. Alice Grant died in May of 1954 and George died ten years later on April 30, 1964.

- History
- On September 22, 1892, the Corporation of the District of Burnaby was established by letters patent. An integral component of this incorporation was the creation of the office of the Reeve (later called Mayor). The Reeve was to serve as the Head and Chief Executive Officer of Burnaby and was to lead the City Council in the governing of the Corporation. Burnaby’s first Reeve and Council were elected by acclamation on October 15, 1892, with formal elections held by ballot three months later. From 1893 until 1977 the Reeve and Council were elected for one-year terms, but the practice of annual elections was abandoned in favour of two-year terms in 1977. The current practice of holding elections every three years was begun in 1987. Elections of Reeve and Council were suspended altogether in 1933. However, as a financial crisis in the Corporation resulted in the Province intervening and assuming control of the local government. For ten years, Commissioners were appointed by the Provincial Government to manage the affairs of the Municipality, but by January 1943, the situation had been remedied and local elections were once again held. From 1892 until 1968, the Chief Executive Officer in Burnaby was known as “Reeve,” but this nomenclature changed with revisions to the Local Government Act in the latter part of the twentieth century. In 1968, the Province altered the Act and abolished the practice of assigning different titles to the members of Council based on Municipal Classification and introduced "Mayor" and "Alderman" as terms applicable in all Municipalities not just those of a certain size or with a certain number of citizens. From that point on, the CEO of Burnaby has been referred to as the Mayor of the City. Despite these changes in election procedures, naming protocols, and the disruption caused by the financial crisis in the 1930s and 1940s, the roles and responsibilities of the Mayor have remained relatively stable throughout the years. As Head and Chief Executive Officer of the City, the Mayor is responsible for ensuring that the principles of law and good government are enforced in Burnaby. This includes the task of overseeing the conduct of officers and employees and directing the management of municipal business and affairs as well as chairing the meetings of Council and appointing Council Committee members. The Mayor is also charged with the duty of representing the City at public functions, in meetings with visiting dignitaries, and in participating in local community and fundraising events. Initially, the Municipal Clerk assisted the Mayor in his work by handling most correspondence and clerical tasks of the office. Today, however, the Mayor’s office retains its own administrative staff who are responsible for facilitating all schedules and arrangements for the Mayor along with coordinating their internal and external contacts and events. - Fonds consists of records, primarily photographs, compiled by various members of both the Hill and Peers families that document their lives during the early days of settlement in Burnaby. The fonds includes records of citizenship, wills and other official papers pertaining to the life and activities of L. Claude Hill; photographs of the Peers family’s Burnaby Lake home, Greyfriars, and pictures taken by Arthur Peers during his work and travels throughout British Columbia in the first part of the 20th century; and photographs of the family of Claude Hill, early Burnaby Lake residents and scenes, and pictures Kitty took as an adult documenting the growth of her own family. Also included in this fonds are a number of photographs showing Yellow Point, Vancouver Island, where the Peers and Hill families often vacationed.
- History
- Bob Peers was born William John Peers, the son of real estate broker and early Burnaby resident, Francis John Peers and his wife Elizabeth Frisby. Originally from England, the family moved to Vancouver in 1905 and soon after settled at Burnaby Lake. The family included one daughter (Mary Elizabeth Dora) and four boys (Arthur Francis, William John “Bob”, Geoffrey Hugh, and Richard Dominic). When they arrived in Burnaby, Francis Peers purchased a piece of land from another early settler, Claude Hill, and built the family home “Greyfriars” near Deer Lake. The children attended school in the home of Miss Harriet Woodward, the first school to be held in the Burnaby Lake area. In 1925, Bob married Claude Hill’s daughter and another former pupil of “Miss Harry’s,” Kitty Hill. Kitty (born Katherine Maude Hill) was the only child of Burnaby pioneers L. Claude Hill and Annie Sara Kenrick. Having moved to the Burnaby Lake area in the early 1890s, Claude went on to operate a successful strawberry farm and soon became active in the political development of Burnaby – being elected to the first Burnaby Council and serving from 1892-1894 and again from 1909-1910. The first Hill family home, “Brookfield,” was sold around 1907 and the family moved to their new home, “Broadview,” which was also built in the vicinity of Deer Lake. In 1925, Bob and Kitty were married and they went on to have three children, Robert C.K., Barbara (later Barbara Jeffrey), and Anne (later Anne Latham).

- All photographic records have been scanned and are saved in jpeg format on the City of Burnaby network. Archival master copies have also been produced in tiff format and have been burned to CD for preservation purposes.

- William Frederick and Kenneth Oliver Silver were both machinists in Burnaby, and were co-owners of the Silver Brothers Garage at Kingsway and Silver Avenue. William Frederick Silver was married to Isabella June McKinnon in 1883. Their son Hugh went to Kingsway West. William died December 26, 1943. Hugh died March 26, 1971.

- History
- Harriett Fenwick came out west from North Dakota in 1892. She married Frederick "Fred" Thrussell and the couple opened the North Arm Dairy, the Thrussell farm and family business on Marine Drive at Nelson Avenue in Burnaby. After Fred Thrussell passed away, she sold of the dairy equipment and stock at an auction on January 18, 1910. Their eldest daughter Mary Anne “Annie” Thrussell (later Phillips, and later again Welsh) was born in Burnaby in December 1895. After marrying her first husband, she moved to Ferndale, Washington and had their son Lawerne Phillips. In 1930, she moved to Surrey with her second husband, Jim Welsh and her second child, Hazel. Fred and Harriet's son Frederick T. Thrussell was born in Burnaby in 1901. He attended Dundonald Public School in Burnaby, with Florence M. Bowell as his teacher in 1911. As a youth, he worked in a shingle mill and spent the rest of his working years in shingle and sawmills. Frederick T. and Ruth McMillan were married March 9, 1929 and the couple moved to Surrey. Fred and Harriet's second daughter, Ethel Thrussell (later Cleghorn), attended Alta Vista Public School as a senior in 1913 where J.G. Whiten was her teacher. Their third daughter, Eva H. Thrussell, went to Riverway East School with Helena F. Crake as her teacher. In 1914, Eva attended Nelson Avenue School with F. Anderson as her teacher. Their youngest daughter Edith Thrussell (now Cleghorn) also attended Riverway East in the same class as her sister Eva. When eldest daughter Annie celebrated her 90th birthday in December of 1985, Edith was her only living sibling.

- History
- George Jeffery was a well-respected Burnaby police constable, having served first as a solider. Upon joining the police force in 1912, he was appointed to patrol the Central Park district, a position he held for 22 years. From his experiences confronting young shoplifters, he determined the reason groups of boys were getting into trouble was due to a lack of recreational activities on offer. He established the Burnaby Athletics Association in an old barn behind the Royal Oak Hotel to combat this, turning it into a competitive boxing ring and gym. George and his wife Harriet lived most of their married life in Central Park district with their three daughters: Patricia, a teacher in Burnaby prior to her marriage; Winnifred, Burnaby's 1929 May Queen; and Elsie who excelled at badminton. Patricia married William Poole; Winnifred married Fred Shaughnessy; and Elsie married Art Winteford. In 1935, when the BC Provincial police replaced the Burnaby Police, George quit the force in order to stay in Burnaby and worked at Oakalla Prison farm. He retired in 1945.

- History
- Charles William Bailey was born in St. Thomas, Ontario on September 1, 1887. Shortly after, his family moved to the west coast. After the Vancouver fire of 1896, his family moved to Burnaby and acquired seven acres of government-offered land. Charles married Sapperton-born Minnie Bendle Booth in New Westminster on January 2, 1914, just seven days shy of her sixteenth birthday. Charles worked for Vancouver Iron Works and the couple lived at 1505 11th Avenue in Burnaby. Their first child, Frank Albert William Bailey was born at the house on May 19, 1916. Winnifred Patricia Bailey was born in the same house May 25, 1918. Theodore Bailey was born August 8, 1919 but only lived until August 12 of the same year. Their fourth child, Norman Charles Edward "Charlie" Bailey was born at the Royal Columbian Hospital, New Westminster, BC on September 1, 1922. Frank was a member of Division XIII at Kingsway West School in 1922. Winnifred was a member of class seven at Burnaby South High School in 1932. By 1958, both Charlie and Frank were married and Minnie and Charles had three grandsons and one granddaughter. From 1922, the family lived at 3125 Kathleen Avenue, Burnaby (later renumbered 6080 Kathleen Avenue). In 1995, the Bailey family house at 6080 Kathleen Avenue was acquired by the City of Burnaby as part of the Metrotown Development Plan. The property was purchased for land development purposes and the house demolished.

They moved to Canada between 1911 and 1913 and had five children: Clara Violet (1910-1913), Mary (1900-?), Alice Clarissa (Clissie) (1902-?), Bernard (1897-1972) and Leopold (1893-1951). The Buxton house remains a heritage landmark in Burnaby to this day.
