She served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in the British Columbia legislature from 1972 to 1986, (her seat was the Vancouver-Burrard riding and later the Burnaby-Edmonds riding) making her the first Black Canadian woman to be elected to a Canadian provincial legislature. She was a leadership candidate for the New Democratic Party in 1975 and came in second with 41% of the vote.

Identified at the table are; Barry Jones (wearing a dark vest, with his face towards the camera), Gary Begin (in profile, wearing a dark suit jacket), and Don Brown, (at the bottom, center, wearing a plaid suit jacket, and facing away from the camera. The other members of the School Board at this time were (not identified); Joanne Beamish, Elise W. Dean, B.R. "Doc" Street, and J.N. Williams. The people at the table are surrounded by a crowd of teachers and citizens of Burnaby concerned about budget cuts.
