- Reginald E. "Reg" Millway was born on December 20, 1915 at Milton Regis in the County of Kent. He graduated from London University via Regent Street Polytechnic and was appointed to the Air Ministry Technical Division in 1937, where he remained throughout World War II. Due to a hearing impairment he was unable to join the services and instead joined the Home Guard and served on fire bomb patrol in central London. Betty was born November 16, 1916. She married Reginald in 1940. Together they had four daughters: Catherine, Penelope “Penny”, Jennifer and Francis “Fran”. The Millways left Britain in March 1948. They sailed on the last voyage of the Acquitania to Halifax, and then took a parlour car in a C.N. train to New Westminster and took up residence in South Burnaby. After two or three years, Reginald had established his own business, Marine Electronics. When the United Flower Growers Cooperative formed in the late 1950s, Reginald helped them assemble property at Roseberry and Marine Way in cooperation with the Director of Planning. A large auditorium was built there and Reginald helped them design, manufacture and install a complete electronic system. Modifications and additions have occurred along the way to the point that it is handling millions of dollars worth of flowers annually and it is the largest operation of its kind in Canada. Reginald Millway ran in the Burnaby elections of 1957. Newly elected Mayor Alan Emmot offered him the chairmanship of the Zoning Board of Appeal (later the Board of Variance). He remained chairman for the next 35 years. In 1962, he joined the Rotary Club of Burnaby; he served as president of the club in 1969 and was a member for over 45 years. Reginald was also an early member of the Burnaby Historical Society. He served as its president for three terms. He and Blythe Eagles went to Loughborough, England, on behalf of the Society to locate and clean up the site of Robert Burnaby's grave. Reginald was also on the committee that acquired the property and organised the establishment of the Burnaby Village Museum. Betty Millway was an accomplished writer and received the 1984 Canadian Author’s Association Allan Sagster Award for long and meritorious service. She developed Robert Burnaby's family tree for the Historical Society and in the process made many contacts with prominent citizens of Loughborough, including the executive controller of the area, who introduced the Millways to the Mayor and Council. This formed the groundwork for a close relationship which Mayor Bill Lewarne formerly developed as a Sister City relationship in 1985. The Millways were longstanding members of the Burnaby Beautification Committee and their garden was featured in Gardens West in the 1998 November/December issue. Betty Millway died July 21, 2005. Reginald E. Millway died November 7, 2010.

- The Burnaby Board of Trade formed on September 4, 1926 and registered with the province December 14, 1926. George Conway Brown was elected as Secretary. On May 30, 1927, The Governor General officially granted the Board to change its name to the North Burnaby Board of Trade. The Board's boundaries, under Secretary Thomas B. Blake, were changed from "the Municipality of Burnaby" to "that portion of the Municipality of Burnaby which lies north of Still Creek, Burnaby Lake and Brunette River" British Columbia. On April 26, 1932, the North Burnaby Board of Trade Constitution and Bylaws were adopted with A.G. Kidd as Secretary. Membership was open to all persons directly or indirectly engaged or interested in the trade and commerce or the economic welfare of the district of North Burnaby. The Secretary was the executive officer of the Board, ordered to keep the books, conduct the correspondence, preserve official documents, take minutes at all meetings, have custody of the seal and be in charge of all funds and accounts held by the Board. The North Burnaby Board of Trade was involved in many historic municipal decisions including the development of Barnet Park and establishing a unified Fire Department under one Fire Chief.

- Frances Mabel "May" Webb was born in Cradley, England on December 5, 1872. She sailed from England to Victoria, BC with her parents, Joseph William Webb and Frances Jane Webb (nee Yapp) on the SS Lake Winnipeg in 1889. One of the few possessions that she brought with her was an old wood-rimmed bicycle which she found quite useful after her move to Burnaby. She would ride it all the way from Patterson’s Trail and Westminster Road (today’s Patterson Avenue and Kingsway) to the Woodward’s store in Vancouver where she would place her grocery order. She packed a pearl handled revolver with her in order to scare any bears she might see along her ride. In 1890, Frances married Dugald Campbell Patterson (b. 1860, d. 1931) in Victoria, BC. In 1894, the couple built a pioneer homestead and farm on five acres at what would become the north east section of Central Park. Dugald founded Vulcan Iron Works (later Dominion Bridge Company) in New Westminister in 1903, and the couple settled in the Central Park district. By 1904, the family moved to the Edmonds district where in 1909 she operated the post office that her husband founded. In 1910, they began construction of a new house, complete with tennis courts and a gazebo, on 14 acres purchased for $720. The house is now located at 7106 18th Avenue and is a dedicated heritage building. The couple had seven children: William H. "Bill", Jean, Frances Mabel Lili., Dugald C. Jr, Mary, Charles Bruce, and Alice. The Pattersons were community-minded citizens that served Burnaby through their involvement with local municipal affairs and politics. In 1909, Dugald became the first postmaster of Edmonds. He also served as a School Trustee from 1912-13 and was one of the first residents to lobby Burnaby City Council to preserve the local ravines as parks. They also helped build the Central Park Presbyterian Church, along with other pioneer families. The family name is remembered and honoured by the naming of Patterson Avenue and the Patterson SkyTrain Station located in the Metrotown area. Frances Mabel assisted her husband with an insurance and real estate company that he founded in Burnaby and New Westminster. This experience would prove invaluable, as she would later become an insurance agent for the Wawanesa Insurance Company (founded in 1896). Frances never owned an automobile, so she met her insurance clients all over Burnaby, New Westminster and Vancouver by using the Lower Mainland’s street car system. The insurance profession continued to provide her with a steady income long after her husband’s death. Frances Mabel died in New Westminster, BC on August 30, 1960. Frances Mabel Lili Patterson was born on June 9, 1905 and was the fifth child born to Dugald Campbell and Frances Mabel Patterson. She became the first PBX switchboard operator for the Municipality of Burnaby in the early 1920’s. PBX, or Private Branch Exchange, was the term used for an internal telephone system. Frances later became president of the Professional Women’s Association of New Westminster, and volunteered her time with the May Day celebrations in New Westminster. She was also a dedicated member of the Rebekah Lodge (the women’s division of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows). While in the lodge, she met her future husband, Walter Duke and they married on July 12, 1939. They couple moved to Wenatchee, Washington after getting married, and Frances relocated to Victoria after her husband died. Frances died on January 13, 1974. Doreen Nettie Patterson was born December 12, 1927, the youngest daughter of Charles Bruce Patterson and Elva Eleanore Patterson (nee Elliott). At age 23, Doreen became the first woman from BC to enlist in the new Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service and by the fall of 1951, she had become a Wren in the Royal Canadian Navy. She received her basic training at HMCS Cornwallis and became a radio intelligence operator for the wireless communications base at Naval Radio Station Coverdale near Moncton, New Brunswick. In 1953, she was chosen to serve a term at the naval base in Churchill, Manitoba. She was one of only eleven women to ever serve there. After her career in the navy, Doreen worked in the accounting division for Simpsons-Sears in Burnaby near her grandparent’s original family home at Patterson Avenue and Kingsway. Doreen married Gerard Reitsma on August 18, 1960. Doreen died on April 30, 2000.

- Ernest Pitman owned a men’s furnishings store in Weston-super-Mare, England. He and Mary Jane “Jean” Gill were married in Cardiff, Wales and their children Clifford, Dorothy, Marjorie and Gwendolyn were all born in Weston-super-Mare, England. Ernest was the brother-in-law of Willard H. Hoyt of Phillips-Hoyt Lumber Company on McKay Avenue. The family of six came to Canada in 1912 and settled in Burnaby in 1914. Ernest Pitman had to clear the lot at 2766 Cassie Avenue of tree stumps before Mr. Mansell could build their wooden four room house. The family moved to Victoria in 1920, renting out the house on Cassie Avenue, and returning to it in 1922. The Pitman children attended Kingsway West School and Burnaby South High School. Ernest Pitman bought a dry goods store near the corner of McKay and Kingsway and renamed it McKay Dry Goods Store in 1926. He expanded the store when Lloyd’s Studio closed to include a post-office, ladies and menswear, children and babywear. His older children, Dorothy and Gwen, were the first employees, working at the store after school and on Saturdays. Clifford and Marge also served through the years. McKay Dry Goods closed in the late 1950s but the structure still stands. Ernest Pitman opened his second shop, Jubilee Dry Goods and Men’s Furnishings, in 1930 in the area then known as Shacktown. In 1935, he expanded the store to include the old Wray shoe store and post office. Jubilee was first managed by Dorothy, but when she married Dave Howat Gwen took over as manageress. In 1961, Gwen Pitman won the Show Window Contest in the small retail outlets category, receiving a $100 prize from the Burnaby Chamber of Commerce. She continued to run the store until she closed it for the last time in 1971 and retired. The other children also lived their adult lives in Burnaby: Clifford Pitman and his wife raised two boys on Rumble Street and Marjorie Pitman Everett and her husband raised three children in the Grange-Willingdon area.

- Subseries consists of papers and photographs collected by Pixie McGeachie during her tenure as archivist for the Burnaby Historical Society Community Archives. Also included are newspaper articles and essays penned by Pixie, a series of research files collected and organized for her own personal use and a selection of ephemera.
- History
- Doreen "Pixie" McGeachie was a resident of Burnaby for over 60 years. She served as the editor for the Burnaby Examiner newspaper and wrote a column entitled "Burnaby History" for The News. In 1974 she authored her first book titled "Bygones of Burnaby" which was one of the first to develop anecdotal stories about pioneer life in Burnaby. She authored "Burnaby - A Proud Century" in 1992 and in 2002 she wrote a biography of the city's namesake in the book "Land of Promise: Robert Burnaby's letters from Colonial B.C." Pixie also contributed many hours of volunteering; helping to establish Burnaby's first museum Heritage Village in 1971, serving as President of the Burnaby Historical Society from 1991-1993. She served a six year term on Burnaby's Heritage Commission, leading the charge to preserve many historic sites throughout the city, and during her twenty years as the Community Archives volunteer archivist for the Historical Society, she succeeded in gathering thousands of rare and valuable historic photographs and documents which now forms the core of the photograph collection on the Heritage Burnaby website. The City of Burnaby awarded Pixie McGeachie the Kushiro Cup as Citizen of the Year in 2002. In 2006 she received a Heritage BC project award for leading the Friends of Interurban 1223 project, and in 2008 Heritage BC recognised her again by presenting her with the Ruby Nobb Award. Pixie McGeachie passed away in August of 2010. On 24 September, 2011, the City of Burnaby dedicated the reading room at the City Archives in her honour and formally named it the Pixie McGeachie Reading Room in recognition of her years of service to the community.

- Joseph Pollard was born in Boston, Lancashire and moved to Preston, Lancashire where he apprenticed as a butcher and worked as an attendant at Rainhill Mental Hospital. In 1909 he immigrated to Canada; first to London Ontario, then to Brandon, Manitoba where he met his future wife, Agnes Colvin. Agnes Jane Colvin grew up on a farm in Northern Ireland near Bushmills, county Antrim. She, her sister Mary and brother James emigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1910. Agnes was hospitalized wtih scarlet fever. As soon as she was well enough, she moved to her cousin’s farm in Moosomin, Saskatchewan and began nursing at a mental hospital in Brandon. Joseph and Agnes were married on September 13, 1912. After traveling to England for their honeymoon, they settled in Port Coquitlam, BC in 1913 where their first child, May Elizabeth was born. Shortly after, they bought their first home in East Burnaby at 332 17th Avenue where their second and third children, Joe and Sidney, were born. The Pollards second home was at 1095 16th Avenue in the Edmonds district of Burnaby. Twins Peggy and Claire were born in this house. In 1916, Joseph enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force and was sent overseas to England where he remained for the duration of the WWI. In May of 1919, he returned home and opened J. Pollard Meat Market in South Burnaby. He operated this business until 1936 when he and Agnes bought Lily Auto Court on Kingsway in Burnaby. They managed this business for about seven years, then sold the hotel and retired to Vancouver. Joseph and Agnes's eldest child May graduated from Burnaby South High School in 1930 and the Provincial Normal School in Vancouver in 1931. She worked as a substitute teacher for four years before getting her first teaching assignment at Armstrong Avenue School in 1935 where she taught grades one to five. After two years, she was promoted to Nelson Avenue School where she taught grade one for two years. She married in April of 1939 and her two daughters, Diane and Marilyn, were born in 1948 and 1952 respectively.

- History
- Edwin Ramsey came to Canada from Scotland when he was about 11 years old. He was given farmland and quickly became an avid farmer. Edwin Ramsey married Annie Plummer circa 1893. This was Annie Plummer’s second marriage. In the early years of their marriage, Edwin and Annie lived in Orange Ridge, Manitoba and operated a store and post office. Their first child, Queenie, was born November 11, 1895. Albert Edwin "Bert" Ramsey was born January 27, 1898. Eva Lilian Ramsey was born January 24, 1900. Jessica “Jessie” Ramsey was born two years later. The Ramseys then headed to New Westminster. By 1905 they had bought "the Park” (what is now Robert Burnaby Park) from Mr. Wintermute for $4,000 cash. They moved into a large house already constructed on the property. The park was full of apple trees, a garden, pigs, two cows, horses and a buggy and wagon with a barn near the second street entrance. By now, the eldest, Queenie was enrolled at Burnaby’s first school. Twins Ernest “Ernie” and Dorothy “Doll” were born in 1906. Eva started at Edmonds School in 1908 when it was just built. Her siblings Queenie, Bert, Jeanie, Ernie and Doll all attended the school as well. In 1909 the Ramseys sold the park to Mr. Vidal of New Westminster and his syndicate along with a portable mill to Pemberton & Sons and received enough money to buy six lots on 12th Avenue where they built a large house. Gordon “Gord” Ramsey was born in that house in 1909. Soon after, they sold the house and moved to Blaine for six months, then on to Bellingham where they remained until Edwin and Annie divorced in 1914. Edwin moved alone to Alberta and Annie moved back to Burnaby with their children. Bert began attending the University of British Columbia where he studied to become a doctor. He joined the army in May of 1916, went to war and was killed at Vimy Ridge on April 12, 1917 at the age of 19. As Mr. Vital and his syndicate were to go to war as captains, Mr. Vital gave up the park property and Annie was able to take it back. Unfortunately, the new initiative of taxing wild lands caused Annie to lose the park property through tax sale proceedings. She then entered into a lease agreement with Burnaby which allowed her to stay on at "the Park." With twelve years of piano training, Annie was considered a talented musician and played the piano at St. Alban’s church for many years. Annie Ramsey died on October 3, 1926. Jessica, Dorothy and Queenie all moved to the United States. Gordon married a woman named Irene. Eva married William “Bill” Anderson at the St. Stephen’s Church in New Westminster on July 7, 1919. She and Bill were the first couple to marry there. They held their wedding reception at “the Park.” In 1921, Bill and Eva bought a home at 723 Second Street for $2450. They had one daughter, Dorothy "Dot" Anderson. Dot later married Robert V. “Bob” Douglas. Eva died in 1995.

- History
- Richard Bolton was born in Sunderland, England in the 1880s. He immigrated to Canada on May 26,1911. Later that year he was employed as an accountant by the Corporation of the District of Burnaby. He lived with his brother George in New Westminster before purchasing his own property on North Arm Road (now Marine Drive), building a bungalow that he moved into in the summer of 1916. During World War I, Richard was promoted to Municipal Treasurer, a position he held until he retired. In 1919, he received three months leave of absence to return to Sunderland to marry Mary Gertrude Hern, daughter of Captain and Mrs. John Hern. Richard and Mary had two daughters, Nancy (b.1920) and Mary (b. 1923), that they raised in their family home located at 859 Marine Drive in South Burnaby. Both daughters were born at home, assisted by the Victorian Order of Nurses and the local doctor. The V.O.N. were established in Burnaby in 1912 and Richard Bolton supported and helped the Order every opportunity he had until his death on November 16, 1962. During the heart of the Depression, the family home became the meeting place for friends and relatives who could not find employment. During this time, Richard had discussions with Ernie Winch and others about seniors housing in Burnaby. The first phase was constructed between 1949 and 1956. In 1938, Richard was appointed Justice of the Peace by the Provincial Government but never accepted any remuneration for his duties. During this time period, Burnaby was under commissionship and when Commissioner Hugh M. Fraser became ill, Richard assumed his duties. He filled the position as Acting Commissioner and treasurer, and converted back to treasurer when the Reeve and Councillors of the Corporation of the District of Burnaby were reinstated in 1943. In 1951, Richard retired as treasurer for the City but he continued to chair the Debt Retirement Board until it became redundant in the late 1950s. On June 24, 1959, Reeve Allan Emmott presented the Gold Key to Burnaby to Richard.

- History
- Richard Hardy was born in Fishborn, Alberta on November 3, 1910. In 1922 his family moved to his maternal grandparents' home at 1127 Edmonds Avenue in Burnaby. His parents, John Harrison Hardy and Gertrude Hephezebarh (nee Ward) moved to Burnaby with their four children: Edith, Richard "Dick", Geoffrey, and John Edward "Jack". Gertrude was born in Barrie, Ontario. John Harrison Hardy was born in Yorkshire, England and came to Canada in 1899, settling at Pincer Creek area of Southern Alberta. In about 1910, Richard's grandparents, Col. James Edward Ward and his wife Hephzibah (nee Hale) moved from Alberta to Burnaby. Col. Ward was the postmaster in the Lozells area of Burnaby and was a city councillor for the District of Burnaby in 1915. Dick was enrolled at Edmonds Street School for his elementary school years, and later attended Burnaby South High School for two years, taking a commercial course. The family attended St. Alban's Anglican Church. While Richard was a student, he and his brother Geoff delivered newspapers in the area making about $12 per month. In 1911, Dick joined the Burnaby Boy Scouts and continued to be involved for the next 40 years. In 1927, at the age of 17 years, Dick began work for the Corporation of the District of Burnaby as an office boy in the Treasurer's Department and retired as Tax Collections Supervisor in 1973 after 45 years of service. From September 1942 until his discharge in 1946, Dick served in WWII in the Canadian Army. His brother, Jack, served in the Canadian Air Force and was killed in April,1943. In 1933, Dick's parents moved back to Alberta with three of their children, leaving him in the family home on Edmonds Street. In 1939, after courting, he and Mabel Lilian "Mabs" Young of New Westminster married. Prior to her marriage, Mabs was employed as a teacher at the Burnaby South High School. Mabs and Dick had two daughters, Lynne (b. 1941) and Katherine (b. 1947). The family lived on Edmonds Street until 1947 when they moved into their second home in Burnaby at 2006 Buller Avenue (now 7185 Buller Avenue). In 1960, Mabs and Dick moved to their third Burnaby home, located at 4337 Wildwood Crescent. Mabs died in 1980. Dick continued to live in Wilwood Crescent house until 1983, when he moved to an apartment for one year but, missing his garden, he bought a small house with a large yard located at 8452 16th Avenue. He stayed in this house from 1985 until 1998 when he could no longer live independently. He moved to assisted living at Canada Way Lodge then to the nearby George Derby Centre where he lived for a few months before dying in August 2001. Dick loved to hike and camp and enjoyed his family and his garden.

- History
- The original Riverway West School was a one room school house built in 1923 just west of the ravine at Sussex Avenue and Marine Drive. Miss Marion Swanson was the first teacher at the school ande Mr. Morrison its first custodian. Miss Carrie Kidd taught from 1924 to 1935, with the enrolment increasing from 18 in 1924 to 42 pupils in 1929, and including grades one to seven. In 1930 grades one to four were at Riverway while the older students went to Nelson. It continued on as a one-room school of four grades until 1952. As the school was seen by parents to be “greatly lacking” for students and teachers “in comfortable accommodations and vital equipment necessary for their extra curricular and recreational needs, such as were enjoyed by children in the larger schools” they formed a parent-teacher association in September 1951 to remedy the situation. From the beginning the PTA was very active in making its desires known to the School Board and “the school was very fortunate to have an organisation which put forth such a united effort on behalf of the children”. Their first bazaar fundraiser allowed the PTA to purchase a hot plate and the necessary utensils to provide the students with soup and cocoa during the cold weather. At their request, the School Board improved the electrical wiring in the school and built a roof over the stairs to the basement and provided more sports equipment for the children. Art classes and piano classes were started through the efforts of the members and in 1953 a cub pack and a brownie pack with PTA members as Cub Leaders and Brownie Leaders was created. A ditto machine and school library were the direct results of successful bazaars held by the PTA. The PTA also made a survey of the school district in 1951 to analyse the future school population and presented the results to the School Board. Following this, a portable unit was erected beside the existing school house for use the following September. It was in use until 1958. In the late 1950s, the PTA approached the School Board and the Burnaby Parks and Recreation Commission and proposed a park on the grounds adjacent to their school to relieve a playfield deficiency. The creation of Riverway West Park was the direct result of this proposal. As Parks Planner Paul Stocksted pointed out in 1961, “All of this would not have been possible had not the people associated with the PTA insisted on the solution to the problem of inadequate play areas.” In 1957 the first unit of the new Riverway West School underwent construction. Designed by Carlberg and Jackson with Remigio Maniaga as the contractor, it was completed in September of 1957 and consisted of four classrooms, an activity room and administration facilities. A two classroom addition, also designed by Carlberg and Jackson. was completed on the last day of 1959, three months after its construction began.

- Frederick "Fred" Sullivan Ross was born 1887 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He took his apprenticeship in mechanics in Glasgow prior to 1911, following which he immigrated to Canada. During the First World War he returned to Britain and joined the Royal Navy. He was a Chief Petty Officer, working in the engine room of a mine sweeper in the North Atlantic. Margaret Binnie Dougal was in 1884 in Linlithgow, Scotland. She trained as a nurse before emigrating to Canada in 1911. She also returned to Britain during the war years, nursing at Boulogne in France and later Bristol before returning to Vancouver in 1919. She met Fred through a mutual friend, Agnes Rhind. Fred and Margaret married in 1920 in Vancouver, BC. Their first home was in North Vancouver and was where their first child, Ronald, was born. In 1921 or 1922 they moved to the Burnaby Lake area, buying a three-quarter acre parcel of land at 2974 Sprott Street and had two more children, Ian and Alistair. Fred built, owned and operated the Ross Service Station on Douglas Road, established in 1922 or 1923. The station property ran from Douglas Road up to the Douglas Road School’s fence line. After the municipality appropriated part of the property in the 1930s to create a junction for the new Grandview Highway and existing Douglas Road, Fred got permission to build an upper station with two more pumps. The driveway curved down to the station from where Sprott Street now joins Canada Way and rejoined that road near its junction with Douglas Road. At Ross Service Station, Fred did automobile repairs and used the family car, a Studebaker Commander, as a towing vehicle. He created a garden north of the service station on the upper level where he grew chrysanthemums and daises. In the 1930s, Terry Rowley worked at the service station as one of Fred’s assistants. Fred ran the station until he sold it in about 1949. Margaret died December 29, 1969 at the age of 85. Fred died on August 21, 1971 at the age of 84.

- William Frederick and Kenneth Oliver Silver were both machinists in Burnaby, and were co-owners of the Silver Brothers Garage at Kingsway and Silver Avenue. William Frederick Silver was married to Isabella June McKinnon in 1883. Their son Hugh went to Kingsway West. William died December 26, 1943. Hugh died March 26, 1971.
