History
In February 2001, Council formally approved the City's Corporate Records Management Program. The Program manages the creation, maintenance, and disposition of the records of the City of Burnaby. An integral part of that program is the Records Classification System and Retention Schedule (RCSRS), which provides standardized classification codes among all municipal departments and identifies the retention periods for all classes of records created or received by the City. The City Archives, opened November 10, 2001, is the official repository for all inactive civic records of permanent administrative, legal, fiscal, historical, evidential, or informational value to the City of Burnaby. The Archives is guided by its Mandate and Acquisition Policy which was first adopted by Council on August 13, 2001, and revised on September 18, 2006 to include the acquisition and preservation of private (non-governmental) records that compliment the official city records and enhance understanding of the history and development of Burnaby. Series consists of the Burnaby Historical Society's Community Archives collection. The Society's collection includes photographs, documents, ephemera, oral histories, and other records from a myriad of sources and donors, compiled to document the history of Burnaby.
History
The Burnaby Historical was founded in 1957. The Historical Society developed its Community Archives by collecting, compiling, and preserving records with historic value to the City of Burnaby. It gathered documents, photographs, and other items while also soliciting and acquiring entire collections or groups of archival records. In 1991, the Society was provided a permanent space to house their growing collection at the Burnaby Village Museum and they continued to grow their holdings. Following the creation of the City of Burnaby Archives in 2001, the Society and the City of Burnaby began discussing the possibility of uniting the two collections. In February 2007, an agreement was signed between the two institutions which resulted in the merger of the Society's Community Archives with the City Archives. All records collected by the Society were transferred into the custody of the City and moved from the Burnaby Village Museum to the City Archives in the McGill branch of the Burnaby Public Library.

Item consists of one book, titled "Standens and McQueens: A Canadian Story of Migrant Families" written and published by S. Dale Standen. The book contains genealogical history on both the McQeen and Standen families. The Standens emigrated from England to Ontario in 1856, starting a farm in Minesing in 1862. Dale’s grandfather homesteaded in Kindersley, Saskatchewan, in 1911 and his father moved his family west to Burnaby in 1942. The McQueens emigrated to Yorkon in 1913, and moved to Burnaby in 1941. The book includes a brief history of Burnaby including photographs from the City of Burnaby Archives (Chapter 28). The McQueen family settled on York Avenue, followed by the Standen family on Miller Avenue. The last few chapters in the book (Chapters 28 - 33) share the stories of both families and their involvement in the community of Burnaby.

Series consists of Burnaby Mountain Oral History Project records which were created under the direction of the Community Heritage Commission. The series consists of interviews with 23 people interviewed during 18 sessions which were conducted between September 2015 and January 2016. The purpose of the project was to explore the history of the Burnaby Mountain area which includes the Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area and Centennial Pavilion area, Simon Fraser University, the Trans Mountain tank farm, neighbourhoods such as Lochdale, Forest Hills, and Forest Grove, and watersheds such as the Stoney Creek watershed. A diverse group was interviewed who covered a wide range of topics such as recreation and other uses made of the mountain, the history of setting aside and managing parkland on the mountain, the mountain as home, and values assigned to the natural features of the mountain. The people interviewed included past and present employees of Burnaby's Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department; retired Burnaby city planning staff; retired Simon Fraser University professors; members of the Burnaby Mountain Biking Association, Burnaby Mountain Preservation Society, and the Stoney Creek Environment Committee; people who lived or live in adjacent neighbourhoods and have memories of the mountain from the 1930s onwards; past and present city council members and citizen representatives on the Parks Commission. The interviews range from 1 to 2 1/2 hours in length and cover a time period primarily between 1930 and 2015.
