An accompanying note prepared by Burnaby Village Museum reads: "Until the land was logged off and settlers moved in logging was carried on all over Burnaby. At first oxen and horse teams, up to 16 animals, laboured to move the felled trees, some of which measured 33' in circumference. Later, stationary steam engines or 'donkeys' were used to pull large timbers through the underbrush. Sometimes, if the logging company was big enough, several of these engines were placed at intervals in the forest so that logs could be from source to loading point. This picture was probably taken around 1900 and is quite likely showing part of the Gilley Brothers operation which logged on both the north and south slopes in Burnaby."

An accompanying note prepared by Burnaby Village Museum reads: "This stationary steam engine, or 'steam donkey,' and crew of loggers probably worked for Gilley Brothers who logged extensively in Burnaby. Steam engines were placed in strategic place [sic] to pull heavy logs through the forests. Large teams of oxen and horses were originally used for this work."
