- Biographical Notes
- W.H. “Harry” O’Brien was born in the coal mining town of Nanaimo, British Columbia on October 20, 1914. He came to Burnaby with his parents and five siblings in 1927. Harry’s mother, a school teacher, wanted her children to live closer to school in order to obtain a better education, so the O’Brien family settled at Inman Avenue, Burnaby. Harry's mother, Mary Anne Crossan, was Gilmore Avenue School's first teacher. Harry left school in June of 1929. Harry’s father worked as the caretaker at Central Park around this time and Harry helped him to clear brush, plant trees and enforce the land clearing and wood cutting permit regulations held by men who were on script. Although too young to vote by just over a week, Harry O'Brien worked as a scrutineer for the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) during the 1935 Federal Election. On October 12, 1940 Harry O'Brien married Gertrude Sutherland at St. John the Divine in Burnaby. The Sutherland family came to Burnaby from Winnipeg in 1933 and settled at Nelson Avenue. Harry began his involvement with the Unemployment Organization in Burnaby by participating in an organised protest against the municipality for homeowner evictions brought on by unpaid taxes. The South Burnaby Union of the Unemployed organised in order to protest rules around receiving Relief. Harry became involved, eventually becoming one of the spearheads of the organization, taking over as secretary by 1936. Harry was an original member of the Army of the Common Good, helping to produce over one hundred and twenty-five tons of vegetables from its own gardens to feed Burnaby citizens suffering from the lack of resources during the Depression years. The members of the Army of the Common Good who cut wood for consumption or worked in the gardens were given credit for their work through LU (Labour Units) which they could then use to buy groceries and that at the Army's Cooperative stores, one of which was at McKay Avenue, where Harry began working as Manager of Groceries in 1937. The Credit Union movement of British Columbia was also organized by Harry O'Brien and his fellow Army of the Common Good members. W.H. "Harry" O'Brien died July 1, 1992.

- History
- John Lawrence Fish was born in 1904 at Oldham, Lancashire, England. His father, Samuel, first immigrated to Canada 1909, eventually bringing his family to Davie Street, Vancouver in 1919. In 1924, John started working for the Barnet Lumber Company. After working six months at Hanbury Lumber Company in Vancouver in 1926, he came back to the Barnet Mill. In 1927 he began working for the Nichols Chemical plant. Lucy Isabelle Currie was born in Vancouver in 1911 to Harvey and Jane May “Jennie” (Laidlaw) Currie. After graduating from Magee High School, she studied teaching at the Normal School, then went to work at the Compensation Board. In 1942 John and Lucy married at Ryerson Church in Kerrisdale, Vancouver and moved to an apartment at 4095 East Hastings Street in Burnaby. Their daughter, Rosemary Ann Fish, was born in 1943 and their son, Alan John Fish, was born in 1945. In 1947 or 1948 the family of four moved to an apartment at Barnet, followed by a move to a house at Nichols Road. By 1956, they were living in house number 28 on the Nichols property. Alan and Rosemary grew up at Barnet, roaming freely with the other Barnet children around the area of Nichols and the beaches west of the plant. The Fish siblings were taken to school on the Barnet school bus; they attended Rosser Elementary School, Westridge Elementary School, Sperling Elementary School, Kensington Junior High School and Burnaby North High School. As a young adult, Alan worked weekends as a boiler house fireman at the Bestwood shingle mill from 1963 to 1966. He worked at the Nichols Chemical plant from 1966 to 1967. John worked for the Nichol Chemical plant for over 40 years. On November 3, 1968 he was in an accident at the plant from which he suffered first, second and third degree burns. He succumbed to his injuries in hospital on December 16, 1968. Rosemary married Larry Meech. They were living together at Barnet while finishing college when John died. The Meeches then bought a house in Capitol Hill. Alan and Lucy moved to an apartment at Westridge. Lucy passed away in 1974.

- Andrew Martin Johnson was born in Norway in 1861 and immigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia in 1886. His wife Margaret Sloane was born in Ireland. Margaret and Andrew Johnson's eldest child, Edward Sloane, was born June 10, 1901 but did not survive infancy. Their second child, Andrew Sloane, was born in 1906. Andrew Martin was a major landowner in Burnaby, at one time owning each of the four corners of Royal Oak and Kingsway and many of the adjacent properties. He made his fortune as a partner in the firm of Atkins & Johnson, a leading transportation company in Vancouver which later became the Mainland Transfer Company. In 1910, Andrew Martin purchased Burnaby's Royal Oak Hotel. He soon acquired the property on the opposite corner to build their family home, called "Glenedward" after their eldest son. He owned and operated the Royal Oak Hotel until his death on September 18, 1934. In 1943 Margaret sold Glenedward. The building has since been converted twice: first into the Royal Oak Funeral Chapel and then into the Johnson House Korean Restaurant. Andrew Sloane Johnson attended Kingsway West School and Britannia High School before earning a Bachelor's of Business Administration at the University of Washington in 1930. He lived at Glenedward until moving to Washington for school.

- Fraser Wilson was born in Vancouver on July 1, 1905 and brought up in the Grandview area, with fond memories of berry picking in the wilds of North Burnaby as a child. He left school in 1923 and, although interested in art, he didn’t try to make it a career until a double hernia forced him to stop working in factories and start apprenticing for commercial artists, later opening a sign shop of his own. In 1926 he worked in Australia as a set decoration painter, but had to return to Vancouver when his father fell ill in 1927. Wilson was a political cartoonist for the Vancouver Sun newspaper from 1937 to 1947. When he moved to Burnaby in April of 1943 he was also the artist and author of the cartoon-type serial “Bill Northwood - the personification of the modern Resource Manager” which served to teach the community why forests are important and should be preserved. He lost his job at the Vancouver Sun in 1947; he was the chairman of the Co-ordinating Committee of Newspaper Unions which was involved in the Vancouver Province strike and his publisher didn’t approve. Soon after, Bill White, then-president of the Marine Workers’ and Boilermakers Union, asked Wilson to decorate the Marine Workers’ Auditorium at 3337 West Pender, the Union's hall. The mural that Wilson painted depicts the BC labour movement to honour British Columbia’s workers. This mural launched a new career for Wilson; to this day, hospitals and libraries across British Columbia display his work in lobbies. In 1988, when the building housing the Marine Workers’ Auditorium was sold to a new owner, Fraser Wilson’s mural was removed from the wall, restored by Ferdinand Petrov of the Vancouver Centennial Committee, and installed permanently at the new Maritime Labour Centre on Victoria Drive in Vancouver. Throughout the 1960s, Wilson served as president of the Burnaby Historical Society. He ran for City Council as a Burnaby Citizens Association candidate in 1969 and 1970. Fraser Wilson died on 31 July 1992.

- Built circa 1922, the Mortimer-Lamb House is valued for its association with first owners, Harold Mortimer-Lamb (1872-1970), and his wife, Katherine Mary Mortimer-Lamb (1873-1939). Born in Leatherhead, Surrey, England, Harold Mortimer-Lamb immigrated to Canada in 1889. Seven years later in Vancouver, he married Katherine Mary Lindsay, a native of Winnipeg. Mortimer-Lamb was a key figure in the B.C. mining industry, serving as Secretary of the Mining Association of B.C. between 1900 and 1945, and also as the Secretary of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. In addition to his professional life, Mortimer-Lamb was a pioneer art photographer and was among Canada's leading art critics, and this house served as a central gathering place for renowned Canadian artists of the day. Mortimer-Lamb’s daughter, Molly Lamb Bobak (born 1922), became a renowned watercolourist, and was the only woman ever hired as an official Canadian war artist. The Mortimer-Lamb House is a significant example of the work of noted architect, Samuel Maclure (1860-1929) and his partner, Ross Lort (1889-1969). Maclure, who was a close friend of the Mortimer-Lamb family, was British Columbia's leading residential architect, and was renowned for his high quality designs for prominent citizens in both Vancouver and Victoria. Maclure was a leading exponent of the Art and Crafts design movement in B.C., and established a sophisticated local variation of residential architecture. The Mortimer-Lamb House was designed at the time when Maclure was in partnership with Ross Lort. In 1907, Lort began working for Maclure's firm as a draftsman, and by 1920 was in charge of Maclure's Vancouver office. Lort's architectural career spanned some sixty-years, and he designed some of the province's most familiar houses, apartments, institutions and places of worship. - This interwar bungalow is beautifully preserved and retains many original features. Symmetrical in design, with two steeply-pitched front gables that flank a central arched gable over the front entrance, it also retains its narrow arched windows and projecting purlins in the front gables. Narrow sidelights flank the front door. The matching front elevation windows are typical of the period, with double-hung sash flanking a plate glass “picture window” with a curved transom; the upper panes are cross-leaded. This house was built by Agnes Michie and Elizabeth D. Michie.

These modestly-sized pattern book residences each feature a side gabled roof with a central dormer and a central entrance, as well as interesting Craftsman-style detailing such as the bracketed verandah columns, triangular eave brackets and exposed rafter tails. Though the original exterior siding has been covered by a later stucco cladding, the house maintains its original double-hung windows with elaborate multi-paned upper sashes. Built as a revenue property, it was owned by the Colonial Finance Company in 1915.

These modestly-sized pattern book residences each feature a side gabled roof with a central dormer and a central entrance, and an open front verandah. Both houses have later coverings over their original siding; 3890 Cambridge was stuccoed, and this house received more recent vinyl siding, indicating the periodic pressure on homeowners to “upgrade” through the use of new, applied products. Built as a revenue property by the Colonial Finance Company, this house was owned by David Caldwell, the manager of the Caldwell & Carson real estate company in 1915.

- This home was built for Francois Xavier “Frank” Comeau (1863-1943), a blacksmith who moved from Quebec to Vancouver in about 1890, and his wife Cezarie Marie (née Fortin, 1860-1950), also from Quebec, whom he married in 1903. Featuring a front gabled roof with decorative triangular eave brackets, this comfortable Craftsman bungalow displays other characteristics typical of the style such as lapped siding at the foundation, a shingle-clad main floor, casement windows and stained glass transoms on the front elevation. The most notable feature of the plan is the inset verandah with subtle segmental-arched openings and tapered square columns.

- This house was built for Isac Hartvig Peterson “Harry” Gronning (1880-1955), a Norwegian-born butcher, and his wife Lilly Geneva (née Hatton, 1889-1978). The Gronnings married in Vancouver in 1913, and lived in this home until at least Harry’s death in 1955. Designed to simulate a Norman-style cottage, the most distinctive feature of this eclectic bungalow is its round entry tower with a conical roof. Other distinctive features include its rolled roof edges that simulate a thatched roof, and its rounded arch windows surrounded with imitation voussoirs. It retains its original wooden-sash windows with leaded panes.

- This beautifully-detailed house displays a highly sophisticated mix of fashionable Arts and Crafts elements. The asymmetrical design has stacked inset verandahs on one side, with the ground floor verandah wrapping around the side of the house. The second floor verandah has an arched opening, supported by short versions of the ground floor columns and accessed by French doors with geometric patterned, multi-paned glazing. A semi-circular lunette window lights the attic, and banked windows with leaded transoms are used on the front façade. Decorative details include triangular eave brackets and square verandah columns with distinctive bracketted capitals. The house has survived in original condition except for a later asbestos siding that was applied over the original shingle siding, and the enclosure of the side verandah. The home was owned by J.R. Dawson and Frances Abigail Dawson (née Thompson, 1853-1938) from 1915 until Frances’ death in 1938.

- The gable-on-hipped roofline is this house’s most unique feature. The home is a typical plan of the Foursquare type with the addition of an inset second-storey verandah. The full open front verandah has square columns and closed balustrades. A coloured glass transom was used above the living room window assembly. - This house was owned by Joseph Paul Gartlan (1877-1967), a steam shovel engineer for the B.C. Electric Company from 1906 to 1943, and his wife, Annie Claudia Gartlan (née Wood, 1891-1933). Joseph was a long-time resident of the house, remaining until his death in 1967. Typical of the Edwardian era, this bungalow has a side gabled roof with a large front gable over the balcony, an open front verandah with square tapered columns, and a mix of narrow lapped wooden siding, square shingles and diamond shingles in the gable peak.

- Built at a time when historical styles were favoured for domestic construction, this charming cottage residence was built for Mary Seymour Sutcliffe (1870-1959), the wife of retired painter Arthur Sutcliffe (1863-1932). It was inspired by the British Arts and Crafts movement, as displayed in the half-timbering, rounded door hood and the picturesque, jerkin-headed roof with exposed purlins. While this house has a Boundary Road address, the house faces north instead of west, facing an elevated and extraordinary view of Burrard Inlet.
