Biographical Notes
W.H. “Harry” O’Brien was born in the coal mining town of Nanaimo, British Columbia on October 20, 1914. He came to Burnaby with his parents and five siblings in 1927. Harry’s mother, a school teacher, wanted her children to live closer to school in order to obtain a better education, so the O’Brien family settled at Inman Avenue, Burnaby. Harry's mother, Mary Anne Crossan, was Gilmore Avenue School's first teacher. Harry left school in June of 1929. Harry’s father worked as the caretaker at Central Park around this time and Harry helped him to clear brush, plant trees and enforce the land clearing and wood cutting permit regulations held by men who were on script. Although too young to vote by just over a week, Harry O'Brien worked as a scrutineer for the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) during the 1935 Federal Election. On October 12, 1940 Harry O'Brien married Gertrude Sutherland at St. John the Divine in Burnaby. The Sutherland family came to Burnaby from Winnipeg in 1933 and settled at Nelson Avenue. Harry began his involvement with the Unemployment Organization in Burnaby by participating in an organised protest against the municipality for homeowner evictions brought on by unpaid taxes. The South Burnaby Union of the Unemployed organised in order to protest rules around receiving Relief. Harry became involved, eventually becoming one of the spearheads of the organization, taking over as secretary by 1936. Harry was an original member of the Army of the Common Good, helping to produce over one hundred and twenty-five tons of vegetables from its own gardens to feed Burnaby citizens suffering from the lack of resources during the Depression years. The members of the Army of the Common Good who cut wood for consumption or worked in the gardens were given credit for their work through LU (Labour Units) which they could then use to buy groceries and that at the Army's Cooperative stores, one of which was at McKay Avenue, where Harry began working as Manager of Groceries in 1937. The Credit Union movement of British Columbia was also organized by Harry O'Brien and his fellow Army of the Common Good members. W.H. "Harry" O'Brien died July 1, 1992.

Description
Tea dress, c. 1915. Ivory cotton lawn and lace. Circular neckline, elbow length sleeves, and ankle length skirt. Closes with buttons down centre back. The bodice starts with a neckline in lace, extending to the side back and down the centre front to the waistline. The centre back lace is divided by cotton lawn, pin tucked at the neck. The side front and back bodice are cotton lawn half covered in lace panels. Tiny pin tucks on the side cotton extend from the front shoulder to the back waistband, separated at the shoulder line by bands of lace. The waist is a band of cotton covered in evenly spaced tiny pin tucks, horizontally bordered on top and bottom by bands of lace. It slopes up to a point in centre front, and has a hill and valley shape in back. There are three flower lace medallions on its front, one centre front and one on each side front. The sleeves begin with bands of cotton, lace, and cotton again. They then have bands of wide lace, narrow lace, wide, and narrow again, finished by a small scalloped lace cuff. The skirt is bordered on either side by a vertical strip of lace from waist to hem. From the waist to just below the hips, there is a section of cotton with tiny regular pin tucks. Under this there is a large band of lace that points downward in a V shape at centre front and back. This is followed with a cotton section, lace, cotton, lace, and a truncated cotton section. Then there is a straight band of lace, followed by a lace hem. The dress is machine sewn, unlined, and closes with small mother of pearl buttons that go halfway down centre back of the dress. There are seams on the sleeves, side bodice, and centre back under the button closure, which are french seams. The rest of the dress shaping is formed with lace panel inserts.

Description
Medical case, doctor's; with saws, knives, blades, cutters, needles, string, tourniquet, screw, packaging paper and wire (24 items in all).
Object History
Doctors on battlefields carried with them medical kits containing various instruments for amputation. These often included surgical scalpel, straight forceps for extracting bullets, a large amputation saw, curved scissors for cutting tissue, tourniquet to compress the arteries above the cut during amputations, a double-edged knife called the catlin and bone brush to dust off bone dust from the site. This combination Medical/Amputation Kit was originally owned by well known Vancouver physician and surgeon, Dr. Arthur Isaac Brown. In 1925, he began focusing most of his time and attention on Speaking Tours, pioneering the combination of Science and Religion that became known as Creationism. He authored numerous articles and several books on the subject. The donor's grandmother, Amanda Brown, was involved in setting up the Amputations Club in Vancouver (predecessor of the War Amps Association) and a well-known 1920s social worker.
