- Nestled within a stand of deciduous trees, the Stanley and Isabel Picken House 'Aintree' is a two and one-half storey plus basement shingled and half-timbered Arts and Crafts influenced residence, set on its original 0.6 hectare site adjacent to Brunette Creek in the Burnaby Lake Regional Nature Park.
- Heritage Value
- 'Aintree' is an example of the type of private country estate residences built in Burnaby outside of the established suburbs during the 1920s, and is representative of middle-class residential life during this time. Stanley Boyd Picken (1890-1950) and Isabel Grace Frederique Picken (1893-1971) purchased this property in 1927 to establish the Aintree Dog Kennels, which was the first in the province to breed Irish Setters. This country residence was completed in 1929. Stanley Picken worked at a variety of other jobs including his position as keeper of the Brunette River Caribou Dam. Considered a fine example of romantic architecture, 'Aintree' stands in harmony with its woodland setting. The north wing was added in a compatible style in 1932 using former bridge support beams from the old Caribou Road Bridge for foundation support. 'Aintree' retains most of its original exterior elements including its picturesque shingled siding and half-timbering, demonstrating the late influence of an Arts and Crafts sensibility considered compatible with a country lifestyle.

- Key elements that define the heritage character of 'Aintree' include its: - woodland setting adjacent to Brunette Creek in the Burnaby Lake Regional Nature Park, with a deep setback from Cariboo Road - residential form, scale and massing as exemplified by its asymmetrical two and one-half storey plus basement height and irregular U-shaped plan - romantic Arts and Crafts influence as expressed in elements such as half-timbering on the upper storeys and hand-split cedar shake wall cladding - steeply pitched cross-gabled roofs with dormers connected by a lower central gabled roof, and 'cat slide' extension over side entry - regular fenestration, including wooden-sash casement windows with diamond leaded glass - red brick internal chimney with corbelled cap - associated landscape features, such as a curving driveway leading to the house, an early garage, grassed yard and a backdrop of mature deciduous trees

- History
- Harry Stanley “Stanley” Bate was born April 16, 1895, in London, England, the son of Florence Ellen Barnes and Harry Symonds Bate. Florence and Harry Bate immigrated to Canada in July of 1913. Bertha “Bunny” Sawyer was born February 10, 1889, in London, England, the daughter of Ellen and Willard Sawyer. She sang in a choir at the Crystal Palace, where she met Stanley Bates. Bunny and Stanley were married on August 5, 1917, and were only together for two days before Stanley was sent overseas. Bunny followed her in-laws to Canada alone. Stanley joined them a full two years later. The young couple bought their first house at 2137 Royal Oak Avenue in Burnaby. Their first child, Kathleen Frances Bate was born at home on March 15, 1920. On July 22, 1921, twins Kenneth Willard Stanley Bate and Gordon Bate were born but unfortunately only Kenneth survived. Stanley Bate worked as a salesman and was a member of the Burnaby Police Commission for over half a decade, beginning January 28, 1924. By December of 1925, he and his family of four had moved to 2331 Grey Avenue in Burnaby. Their daughter Kathleen Frances Bate married Joseph Norton Would on December 19, 1942, and gave them four grandchildren: Robert Norton (Staff Sergeant R.N. Would), Carol Frances, Barbara Elaine, and Gordon Lawrence Would. Bunny and Stanley’s son Kenneth married Madge Mathews. Kenneth worked as an undertaker at Woodlawn-Bowell in New Westminster and he and his wife kept in close contact with his extended family. Harry Stanley Bate died April 6, 1945. Later, Bunny married her second husband, George Loomes. Bertha Sawyer Bate Loomes died December 27, 1976.

- Track 3: Esther recalls learning to drive, and Jim asks about her father’s pipe collection and the heating arrangements of the house. They discuss the family’s music and entertainments, and the furnishings and decoration of ground floor rooms. Esther mentions her job picking fruit. Jim shows the women photographs from the archives, and Esther identifies people. Jim asks about the dates of the photos and the additions to the house.

- Jim Wolf talks about Love Farmhouse with Esther Stanley, daughter of Jesse and Martha Love. They discuss the property, and the furnishings, decoration and amenities of the house as she remembers them. Esther’s recollections were to be used as a resource for redecorating and refurnishing the house as it was in 1925 for its use as an exhibit at the Burnaby Village Museum. Esther’s daughters are also present at the interview.
