- History
- Douglas Stewart (1886-1976) was born in Kirkintilloch, Scotland and began working as a butcher at age twelve years. In 1905, at age nineteen years, Douglas immigrated to Canada, first settling in Calgary, Alberta. While in Alberta, John was employed with Burns Meat abattoir, feeding cattle on cattle cars which helped pay his way to Vancouver. Douglas married Jessie Reekie (1888-1975) who was also born in Scotland and the couple had three children, Annie Stewart Shore, Douglas William and Robert Malcolm who were all born in Vancouver. After arriving in Vancouver around 1913, Douglas worked at various meat markets as a butcher. In January 1925, Douglas opened a meat market which he named Thistle Meat Market (also known as Thistle Meats) located near the corner of Kingsway and Cassie Street in Burnaby. The family continued to live in South Vancouver until 1926 when they moved to Burnaby, first residing at 4022 Kingsway with the shop located at 4020 Kingsway. Over the years, Douglas owned buildings with addresses located between 4018 and 4032 Kingsway in Burnaby renting them out as businesses with some residences above. Between 1927 and 1935, Thistle Meats relocated to 4018 Kingsway and between 1927 and 1935 the family relocated their residence to 4020 Kingsway, above a business that was located next door to the shop. Between 1936 and 1953 Thistle Meats relocated to 4028 Kingsway and between 1936 and 1951, Douglas and Jessie relocated their residence to 4030 Kingsway. In 1951, Douglas retired, sold the buildings that he owned along Kingsway and moved to Grafton Street, Burnaby with his wife Jessie. Thistle meats continued to operate at 4028 Kingsway until 1958 and from 1959-1960, it operated at 4534 Kingsway. After Douglas Stewart retired in 1951, H.W. Silzer managed Thistle Meat Market until 1960. Douglas Stewart was a Mason with St. James Lodge No 80 and lifetime member of Kilwinning Lodge No. 29, Kirkintilloch, Scotland. Douglas Stewart died in Burnaby at the age of 91 years and his wife, Jessie died at the age of 87 years.

- Photograph portrait of Dugald Campbell Patterson, Sr.
- History
- Dugald Campbell Patterson Sr. arrived in Burnaby in 1894. He worked for Armstrong Morrison & Balfour and later became foreman boilermaker for the Vancouver Engineering Works. He was the first postmaster of Edmonds in 1909, and was elected a school trustee in 1912. He was a Director of the British Columbia Electric and Water Heat Company and was a member of the New Westminster Board of Trade. He founded an insurance and real estate company in Burnaby and New Westminster. Dugald Campbell Patterson Sr. was born in Partick, Scotland on January 2, 1860. He attended the Glasgow common school, and worked as a ship joiner at Barclay Curle & Company (founded in 1818) in Whiteinch, Scotland. After some years of study, he was employed in the Anchor Line Shipyards (founded in 1856) in Partick. Dugald arrived in Canada on July 1, 1884, and would soon add a second "T" to the spelling of his last name (changing it from "Paterson" to "Patterson"). He married Frances Mabel Webb on February 7, 1891. Together they helped form the Central Park Horticultural Society.Known for his expertise in the field of engineering, Dugald accepted a unique commission at the beginning of World War One. He travelled overseas to supervise a group of Canadians in the construction of submarines on the Clyde River in Glasgow. It was here that he sustained an injury which left him in a wheel chair. Upon his return home, he remained active in both municipal affairs and the arts. He developed a plan that would preserve ravines as parks in Burnaby, and he published a book of poetry. Dugald also served his communty through his membership in the Knights of Pythias,the Canadian Order of Forresters and the Home Reunion Association. Dugald died in Vancouver, BC on June 25, 1931. - History
- George Alford Grant was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on June 22, 1877. In 1907, George married Alice Taylor of Stonehaven, Scotland. Three of their children were born in Edinburgh: William (b. 1908), George Jr. (b. 1910), and Herriot (b. 1912). By 1912, George Grant had secured a job in Burnaby at a law office and brought his family to join him. He eventually established his own law firm, Grant and MacDougal. While in Burnaby, Alice and George Grant had two more children, Alastair and Millie. During World War I, George served in the 11th Irish Fusiliers of Vancouver and reached the rank of Captain. Upon returning to Burnaby, George had a long and distinguished career, serving for over 43 years in both official and unofficial offices in Burnaby – a record of service for which he received both local recognition and the Order of the British Empire. Between 1921 and 1931, George sat on the Burnaby School Board and also served as the Municipal Solicitor in the 1930s. Alice Grant became a life member of the Provincial Chapter of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (as well as the Col. Hart McHarg Chapter) in 1935 and George was a Burnaby Police Magistrate for 13 years, until 1954. During this time, he was recognized for his patience and fairness and the BC Borstal Association benefited from his active interest for many years. George also served as chairman of the West Burnaby Liberal Association from 1925 to 1938, heading the New Westminster Federal Riding Association in 1938. In January 1955, he was presented with the Gold Key award by the Municipality of Burnaby. Alice Grant died in May of 1954 and George died ten years later on April 30, 1964.

- Biographical Notes
- Florence Strachan was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1899. She met and married her husband in Scotland before coming to Atlantic Canada by ship in 1922, then from Quebec to Vancouver by train. When Florence’s husband got a job at Barnet Mills in 1924, the couple moved to Burnaby and rented a house at 2551 East Hastings Street. In 1926, the Strachans bought a house at 290 Ellesmere Avenue and concentrated on paying it off as quickly as possible. By 1931 the Mill had shut down, leaving Florence’s husband out of work, and forced to go on Relief. By this time the couple had two children, one born in 1928, and the other in 1930. Florence and her husband marched and picketed with the unemployed throughout the Depression.

- Florence Strachan was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1899. She met and married her husband in Scotland before coming to Atlantic Canada by ship in 1922, then from Quebec to Vancouver by train. When Florence’s husband got a job at Barnet Mills in 1924, the couple moved to Burnaby and rented a house at 2551 East Hastings Street. In 1926, the Strachans bought a house at 290 Ellesmere Avenue and concentrated on paying it off as quickly as possible. By 1931 the Mill had shut down, leaving Florence’s husband out of work, and forced to go on Relief. By this time the couple had two children, one born in 1928, and the other in 1930. Florence and her husband marched and picketed with the unemployed throughout the Depression.
