For a time, it was the home of Vancouver's former Mayor Buscombe. In 1940 it was occupied by the Order of Benedictine and later became the communal dwelling of the Canadian Temple of the Universal Foundation of More Abundant Life. The conversion of the estate to a cultural centre was Burnaby's centennial project and the first art show was held in June 1967.
