History
Joseph Pollard was born in Boston, Lancashire and moved to Preston, Lancashire where he apprenticed as a butcher and worked as an attendant at Rainhill Mental Hospital. In 1909 he immigrated to Canada; first to London Ontario, then to Brandon, Manitoba where he met his future wife, Agnes Colvin. Agnes Jane Colvin grew up on a farm in Northern Ireland near Bushmills, county Antrim. She, her sister Mary and brother James emigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1910. Agnes was hospitalized wtih scarlet fever. As soon as she was well enough, she moved to her cousin’s farm in Moosomin, Saskatchewan and began nursing at a mental hospital in Brandon. Joseph and Agnes were married on September 13, 1912. After traveling to England for their honeymoon, they settled in Port Coquitlam, BC in 1913 where their first child, May Elizabeth was born. Shortly after, they bought their first home in East Burnaby at 332 17th Avenue where their second and third children, Joe and Sidney, were born. The Pollards second home was at 1095 16th Avenue in the Edmonds district of Burnaby. Twins Peggy and Claire were born in this house. In 1916, Joseph enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force and was sent overseas to England where he remained for the duration of the WWI. In May of 1919, he returned home and opened J. Pollard Meat Market in South Burnaby. He operated this business until 1936 when he and Agnes bought Lily Auto Court on Kingsway in Burnaby. They managed this business for about seven years, then sold the hotel and retired to Vancouver. Joseph and Agnes's eldest child May graduated from Burnaby South High School in 1930 and the Provincial Normal School in Vancouver in 1931. She worked as a substitute teacher for four years before getting her first teaching assignment at Armstrong Avenue School in 1935 where she taught grades one to five. After two years, she was promoted to Nelson Avenue School where she taught grade one for two years. She married in April of 1939 and her two daughters, Diane and Marilyn, were born in 1948 and 1952 respectively.

Description
Pump organ, also known as a reed organ made by the Thomas Organ and Piano Company of Woodstock, Ontario.
The organ is similar in style to an upright piano. It is a ten (10) stop organ with 73 keys. The stops would have been labeled but only three stops retained the labels: Forte, Echo, and Melodia.
The top front panel has three ornamental panels with cut out filigree, backed with red fabric. The same style of cut out and fabric appears below the keyboard. There is a key cover that pulls out from the top panel and the two move in conjunction with each other.
The organ includes two knee levers below the keyboard and two foot pedals. The foot pedals are stamped "Thomas Organ Co" at the bottom. The pedals appear to have been recovered with a rubber material with vertical grooves, potentially a floor mat.
There are carved details in various locations on the organ, and the wood is stained a dark brown.
The back panel of the organ is a different wood and colour than the rest. It could be a replacement panel. The panel is easily removed.
Stamped in ink inside the organ is a model number "A 20404". Stamped into the wood on the back left side is "11/20"

It is also possible to plug in an electronic phonograph to have it play through the radio. There are six push buttons on the front that allow the user to preset stations for quick tuning. . Two of the stations, KOMO and KIRO, broadcast from Seattle, Washington and stations CJOR, CKWX, CKMO broadcast from Vancouver. There is also a CBR station which is the Citizens Band radio. Glued inside the radio cabinet is an envelope that contains a manual, "INSTALLATION AND OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS / FOR STROMBERG-CARLSON NO. 972 RADIO RECEIVERS" and a warranty card "Stromberg-Carlson / Stromberg-Carlson Telephone Mfg. Co. of Canada Limited/ 211-219 Geary Ave. / Warranty Registry Department Toronto 4, Canada". There is also an envelope with three cards stapled together that have punch out radio station call letters. one for "CANADIAN STATIONS" and two for "AMERICAN STATIONS".
Object History
Originally founded in 1894 to manufacture telephones, the Stromberg-Carlson company also produced radio components, and began selling their own complete sets during the early 1920s. By that time, the radio craze had fully absorbed the American public, and radio pioneer RCA was cornering the market after scooping up over 2,000 broadcasting-related patents. Stromberg-Carlson entered the field by making smaller parts for tube radios. Eventually, the company applied its telephone-audio expertise to develop a successful line of radio headsets. In 1923, the company was licensed to produce the “Neutodyne” radio circuit designed by Dr. L. A. Hazeltine. Stromberg-Carlson’s first set came out in early 1924, and the company steadily grew its radio production, eventually requiring RCA licenses for several products. In 1926, Stromberg-Carlson became the first manufacturer to merge phonograph and radio technology by incorporating a phonograph jack into its radio chassis. By the end of the decade, Stromberg-Carlson sold sets with fully integrated radio and turntable technologies, and the company’s radio sales surpassed that of its telephones... The 1930s represented boom years for Stromberg-Carlson’s radio development, as it introduced new modifications like automatic volume control, improved amplifying methods, and an early push-button tuning mechanism. Ads from the late '30s emphasize other innovations, like the unique Stromberg-Carlson “acoustical labyrinth,” a complex baffle design which improved sound quality by guiding audio waves through a series of interlocking chambers, and its “Te-Lek-Tor” series, which included remote-control capabilities. “Let your dealer arrange an audition,” was the brand’s cheeky slogan, emphasizing its reputation for superior sound quality. Over the next 20 years, Stromberg-Carlson created an array of gorgeous Art Deco-inspired radios, from the sleek, ivory-colored 140-K console to the tabletop 225-H with its floral-patterned speaker grill and octagonal dial. After the company’s merger with General Dynamics in 1955, the business was restructured to focus production on telephone products, and its radios were discontinued.

History
Kapoor Singh Siddoo was born in 1885 in the Punjab village of Kharaudi, India. Kapoor was one of the pioneer South Asian Canadian Sikhs who immigrated to America in 1906 and onto Canada in 1912. Kapoor first arrived in San Francisco in 1906, along with twenty uneducated men from the Province of Punjab, India. Kapoor was the only one among these men who was educated so acted as their interpreter, manager and accountant. They worked along the Southern Pacific Railway line near Marysville, California, toward Reno and Nevada. Kapoor heard about the beauty of British Columbia and decided to travel to the west coast but times were tough with discrimination against all South Asians in British Columbia. With this information, Kapoor traveled east to Northern Ontario where he tried homesteading for a year but the extreme winter conditions didn’t appeal to him. Kapoor returned to British Columbia after receiving word from South Asian Canadians that they were in need of an educated accountant/manager for a sawmill. In 1923, with the change in immigration laws, Kapoor arranged for his wife, Besant Kaur to emigrate from India. Besant came to Canada accompanied by Kapoor’s older brother. Kapoor and Besant had two daughters, both born in Duncan B.C. Jagdis Kaur Siddoo was born in 1925 and Sarjit Kaur Siddoo was born in 1926. Both of their daughters graduated as doctors from University of Toronto medical school. His career in B.C. began as a lumberman for a large lumber mill on Vancouver Island until 1935. Following this, Kapoor established the Kapoor Lumber Company Limited and operated a mill at Shawnigan Lake before eventually purchasing 45 acres in 1939 of the eastern section of the former Barnet Mill site in Burnaby. He purchased the site from the Municipality of Burnaby under the name of Modern Sawmills Limited since there was a restriction on selling this piece of a property to a non-white person. Eventually the name was changed to Kapoor Sawmills Limited. Kapoor’s company was a financial success but was tragically razed on January 14, 1947 due to a devastating fire. A smaller mill was rebuilt on the site and Kapoor maintained a successful financial operation until 1959. In 1959, Kapoor Siddoo was considered one of Vancouver’s most influential men in the South Asian Community. In this same year, the family set up the Kapoor Singh Siddoo Foundation and with help from his wife and daughters opened a hospital in the Punjab village of Aur. In 1964, Kapoor died in India at the age of 79 years. Kapoor’s younger brother, Tara Singh Siddoo came to Canada from India in 1906 but after suffering discrimination, he returned to India in 1912. Several years later Tara returned to Canada joining Kapoor at a logging mill on Vancouver Island. Lesser shares of the mill were held by Tara and other family members. Tara and his wife, Beant Siddoo lived at Barnet between 1943 and 1945, with their family of five sons, Lakhbeer, Gurdeb, Gurcharn, Baldev, Hardev and three daughters, Harjeet (Sangha), Runjeet (Basi) and Buckshish (Sarai). One of Tara’s responsibilities was to oversee the logging camp and ensure that the logs arrived regularly from Cowichan Bay near Duncan to the Barnet logging mill.
