Fonds consists of documents related to the Burnaby Board of Trade including its certificate of formation, reports and bylaws pertaining to both the Burnaby Fire Department and Barnet Park, correspondence, District of Burnaby financial reports for 1932 and 1933, District of Burnaby annual report for 1955, one large map of Burnaby (1968) and numerous photographs of Burnaby parks, schools and neighbourhoods.
History/Biography
The Burnaby Board of Trade formed on September 4, 1926 with George Conway Brown elected as Secretary and was registered with the province December 14, 1926. The organization was renamed the North Burnaby Board of Trade with the Governor General officially granting this name change May 30, 1927. Its boundaries were then changed from "the Municipality of Burnaby" to "that portion of the Municipality of Burnaby which lies north of Still Creek, Burnaby Lake and Brunette River" British Columbia. Thomas B. Blake was the Secretary at this point in 1927. On April 26, 1932, the North Burnaby Board of Trade Constitution and Bylaws were newly adopted with A.G. Kidd as Secretary. Membership was open to all persons directly or indirectly engaged or interested in the trade and commerce or the economic welfare of the district of North Burnaby. The Secretary was the executive officer of the Board, ordered to keep the books, conduct the correspondence, preserve official documents, take minutes at all meetings, have custody of the seal and be in charge of all funds and accounts held by the Board. The North Burnaby Board of Trade was involved in many historic municipal decisions including the development of Barnet Park and establishing a unified Fire Department under one Fire Chief. These records were compiled by Tom Blake, Secretary of the North Burnaby Board of Trade in 1927 and serving a member of the executive though to at least 1952.

Photograph of the Angus and Margaret MacDonald house located at Oxford Street and Esmond Avenue. The MacDonald House is one of Burnaby’s landmark residential heritage buildings and was built in 1909 as part of the exclusive subdivision known as “Vancouver Heights.” The family came to Vancouver from Nova Scotia in 1891 and Angus MacDonald, an electrical contractor, served as a Councillor for the City of Vancouver from 1904-1908. Upon his retirement from the B.C. Electric Railway Company, he moved to Burnaby and was a prominent resident serving his North Burnaby ‘Ward’ as a Burnaby Councillor between 1911 and 1916. MacDonald Street in Burnaby was named in his honour. This house which cost $7,000 to construct is reputed to have been the second house built in the Vancouver Heights subdivision. After the death of Margaret MacDonald in 1939 and Angus MacDonald in 1941, the MacDonald family sold the house in 1944 to local grocer John R. and Anne Roane. In 1956, the property was purchased by the late Dr. John Alex MacDonald and his wife Violet E. MacDonald.
