- Wedding dress, 1917. Cream silk, jacket and skirt. Sailor collar, long sleeves, loose cut with fitting, beaded brooch, pleats and button trim on both pieces. The V neck has a large square sailor style collar, with two self covered ball buttons on either side just below the collar ends. At the V point there is a beaded floral brooch with tassels. The sleeves are loose fitting, trimmed with eight buttons at the forearm and gathered to half a cuff. The centre front of the bodice has a bust dart on either side, and cuts off at the waist. Here a belt attaches around the sides, trimmed with four buttons at either side front and back. The bodice's ivory silk lining is not pleated, and it is not attached at the bottom. It closes at centre front with two slide snaps. On the back of the jacket, there is a large pleat on either side. Centre back is fully pleated, and the pleats are sewn down from the neckline to underarm level. At the waistline, there is a narrower band of fabric that joins the side belts together and holds the pleats in place. The back of the jacket extends to the hips, and the sides extend several inches further and each end in a point. The skirt, made with six gores, falls smoothly over the hips. It has a pleated ruffle at the top and a waistband reinforced with a large grosgrain ribbon on the inside. The centre back and centre front are pleated from the waist to hem, the pleats sewn down to the end of the hips. Each side is trimmed with buttons spaced evenly from the waist to hem. The skirt closes at the right side back with slide snaps and hooks and eyes on the grosgrain.

- Photocopy of the original wedding photo is in the acquisition file. Worn by the donor's mother, Mary Edith Pearl Collum (nee Dillabough). She married Eli Wilbert Collum on June 20, 1917, in Winnipeg (she was 25 years old). They moved to Vancouver in 1936, then to Burnaby in 1938. Edith gave the dress to her son first for safe keeping, and then as an inheritance. She passed away February 1, 1989 at age 97 (born 1892).

- Wedding dress, c.1900-1906. Cream lace net lined with white china silk. High collar, pouter pigeon front, puffed sleeves. Comes with a long sash and matching skirt. The collar is made of several bands of lace. The bodice is also lace, with embroidery. On the front there is a pin tucked yoke, and bordering this on the front and back are circles of lace with line embroidery inside. Below this there are more pin tucks and bands of lace. The front puffs out creating a pouter pigeon bodice, and there is a gathered flounce below the waistline. It closes with hooks and eyes at centre back. The sash, a long yellowish-cream piece of silk fabric, would go overtop of the waist. The sleeves are gathered at the cap and again at the cuff. There are bands of lace at the lower forearm, and they end with lace flounce cuffs of the same embroidered circles seen on the bodice. The skirt has a lace top layer and a white china silk lining that is attached at the small waistband. There are tiny pin tucks in the lace layer at the waistband. Halfway down, there is a band of embroidered circles, the same as those on the bodice. They are separated by two bands of lace. There are two more of the same bands of lace near the hem. The net layer has three gores, and the lining has five. There are also two ruffles at the lining hem.

- Wedding dress, c.1909-1910. White cotton crepe with hand embroidery. Short bodice with pin tucks, slight pouf, and three quarter sleeves. Pleated ankle length column skirt. The bodice has a small lace edged V neck, and three pin tucks on each shoulder. Two of the pin tucks angle inwards and continue to the waistline. Between the tucks the bodice is covered with hand worked floral and ribbon themed embroidery. It is gathered at the waistband, creating a slight puff reminiscent of the recently out of fashion pouter pigeon bodice. The back of the bodice has three vertical pin tucks that extend from the shoulder to the waistband on either side of the centre back button closure, with thread covered buttons. There is a slight gather between the pin tucks and side back seams, from the panel under each arm. The sleeves are three quarters in length. They have turned up cuffs topped with embroidery and edged with the same lace as seen on the collar. The skirt has a sailor front opening with six thread covered buttons on either side of a centre front panel. Just past hip level, there are two accordion pleats on either side of the panel. There is a gore on each side and one on the back that flare out slightly; each has the floral and ribbon embroidery. On the back gore, there is a pleat on either side at calf level. The hem is ankle length.

- From donor: "This was the wedding dress of my sister-in-law's mother, worn about 1905. They came from Maine. Made of cotton, hand embroidery, a typical "country-type" wedding gown of the period. It was given to me by my sister-in-law and I am only too glad to have it find such a welcoming spot in B.C.!"

- For his country's sake - Memorial Card -- [1917]. Memorial card for Lieutenant Lawrence Labell Davidson of the 5th Battalion C.E.F. The front of the card has a silver and black border. In the centre is a cross with a wreath below it and two Union Jack flags at half mast on either side with the flag poles crossing at the top of the cross. Below this is "For his country's sake." Inside the card are the same borders. On the left side is the 5th Battalion crest for Western Cavalry. On the right side is information in silver text about Lawrence Davidson. He was wounded at Passchendaele on November 11th 1917 and died in hospital on November 25th in No.14 General Hospital, France at age 21. The bottom of the card says "Regina 1917".

- National Songs of the Allies - Sheet Music/Song Booklet -- [1914]. Booklet of music containing the National Anthems for the allies from World War I. The booklet contains songs for Great Britain, Canada, Australia, India, South Africa, Serbia, Japan, Russia, France and Belgium. The front cover has six flags from the various allies. The songs were translated by J.A.S. and arranged by T Martin. The publication was copyrighted by R.E. Forsyth in 1914. For Canada both "The Maple Leaf Forever" and the French version of "O Canada" is listed. The booklet is staple bound and is 20cm x 27cm.

- Tea dress, c.1910. White cotton with floral eyelets. Round neckline, half length sleeves with gathered cuffs, floor length, full skirt at natural height, non-cinched waist. Around the neck, shoulders, and on the outsides of the arms, the fabric is heavily eyeleted in a flower pattern. The sleeve cuffs have the same eyelet pattern, gathered into a flounce with a crossover opening at the side. On the front and back bodice, the main dress fabric has a square spiral pattern of bands of floral eyelets. The waist, at the natural height and not cinched, is defined by a band of floral eyelets. The skirt is heavily gathered to this band. At hip level on either side, the eyelet band forms a square with sides that extend almost to the hem. Here, the sides of the square end in square spirals, instead of joining together. Above the floor length hem, there is a band of floral eyelets and two tucks. The dress closes up the centre front with pearl buttons and thread loops. A tag on the inside back of the bodice neck area reads "Ladies Outfitting Dept. / Harrods / London SW."

- Woman's suit, c.1917. Black silk brocade with a large collar decoration of ivory wool with black lace. Long sleeves with wool and lace cuffs, ankle length skirt. The neckline of the jacket has a large flat triangular ivory wool collar with black floral lace applique. On the back bodice there is an overlapping extension of the collar in a large square shape. The jacket opens in centre front with five self fabric buttons, ending slightly below the natural waistline. A belt that starts at the natural waistline, between the last two buttons, from the side front seams and continuing around the back. It is tacked to the jacket in several places. The sleeves are long with ivory wool cuffs that reach up to a point on the outside, and a black floral lace applique. The jacket is constructed so as to flare out from the waist. At each side front, there are two panels with a godet in between them. There are four back panels, with a godet on either side of the two centre back panels. There are also two godets at each side seam. There was originally off-white silk brocade, but it was replaced with silk charmeuse in restoration as the original lining was disintegrating. On the inside edge of the front closure, there is a facing under the buttons that continues around the back of the neckline in a thin strip. The shoulder seams are also set further into the back of the jacket. The skirt is made of seven gores, unlined. The front is somewhat gathered. The waistband has a grosgrain ribbon, and closes in the back with two hooks and eyes. the rest of the opening closes with six snaps. The hem extends to the ankles, and the seams are finished by pinking.

- The suit belonged to the mother-in-law of a friend of the donor, named Dougan from Montana. It went to California from there, then British Columbia.

- Autograph Book - Booklet -- [1915]. Autograph book produced by Rose & Co at 44 Above Bar, Southhampton. The book was a gift to Mrs. Orman from the Teachers and Children of All Saints Sunday School, Eastleigh, Southhampton, upon her departure to Canada. The first four pages lists all the teachers and children's names. The front cover of the book is green with two painted purple flowers and "Autographs" embossed in white on the bottom right.
- Object History
- This accession appears to be connected to the Orman family. Ada Leila Orman was born June 2, 1901 in Eastleigh, Hampshire, England. According to the 1915 Census, the Orman family came to Canada in 1911 and settled in Calgary. Father Willoughby Henry Orman is listed there as working as a C.P.R. foreman, while mother Daisy Marie (Harklett) Orman worked at home. Older sister Daisy Hilda (Targett) Orman, worked as a stenographer. At five years old Leila began a long fight with a crippling type of rheumatoid arthritis. By the time she was thirteen, she experienced completely ankylosed joints. Her family travelled all over hoping to find a cure, but to no avail. While living in Calgary, Leila developed an interest in painting, knitting, and composing her own poems. She began writing news articles for the Calgary Daily Herald in the 1930s, and her first sonnet published was in that paper on August 28, 1934. She had a strong interest in the arts, often writing about music and the visual arts. While living in Calgary, she became a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club as well as a member of the Canadian Author’s Association. Three members of the family moved to B.C. when Willoughby retired, ca. 1938. In the 1940 BC Directory, the family are listed as living at 407 Campbell Street, Burnaby. Willoughby died in Burnaby in 1945. Daisy Marie died in 1955 after living 15 years in Burnaby. Her address at the time of her death is listed as 407 Rosewood Avenue, Burnaby. Leila was living with her at that time. Older sister Daisy Hilda married Edgar Harold Targett in 1922. They moved to B.C. from Alberta some years after the other three members of the family (ca. 1962). Daisy Hilda died in 1972. Her address at the time of her death was 7969 Rosewood Avenue, Burnaby. Leila wrote on a typewriter with two sticks to type out the letters. She was an avid reader and was able to turn the pages with a special stick with elastic bands wound around the ends. Canadian novelist Maida Parlow French became her lifelong friend and encouraged her to write her own autobiography - unfortunately it was never finished. Leila wrote “The Giving Heart” in October of 1948. By 1952, she was writing a column for the British Columbia Saturday Magazine entitled “Across the Board” with the intention of inspiring other “incapacitated folk” to live up to their full potential, “If [she] could reach a few people, and encourage them to reach up and out, [she] should feel the effort well worthwhile.” A member of the St. Alban’s Prayer Healing Fellowship group, Leila wrote the “Christian Manifesto for World Peace” in 1963. The Prayer Group met twice monthly at one of the members’ homes and undertook to pray daily for the sick and for world peace. After Leila’s mother died in 1955, Leila’s friend Jeanie Brown kept house for her and was her constant companion. Jeanie Brown and Leila lived together for over thirteen years until an accident sent Leila to hospital and later to nursing home where she died on February 16, 1976.

- To My Dear Mother - Postcard. Small postcard with embroidered fabric centre. The British Union Jack and the French Flag are embroidered on the fabric along with small red flowers and green leafs. At the bottom of the fabric is "TO MY DEAR MOTHER". The fabric in the centre of the card is split into two pieces and unfolds to reveal a small card with a blue stamp on it with "To my dear Mother" written again. On the back of the postcard is room for a written message. The card was made in France. The postcard is 8.5cm x 13.5cm.
