- Recording is of an interview with Al Nixon, conducted by Rod Fowler. Al Nixon was one of eleven participants interviewed as part of the SFU/Burnaby Centennial Committee's oral history series titled, "Voices of Burnaby". The interview is mainly about the history and operations of the Burnaby Fire Department from its beginning in 1911 to 1990, and Al Nixon’s stories about the various ways photographs, records and artifacts about the department were collected and saved. The interview takes place while looking at photographs, but the information is clear nonetheless (His photographs have been deposited in the Burnaby Archives). Al Nixon also talks about his father's career as a firefighter, and about his Douglas grandparents and their home “The Gables” [Seven Gables] and neighbourhood in Burquitlam. - Biographical Notes
- Al Nixon was born in New Westminster Feb. 8, 1936, the son of Provincial Fire Marshal Basil Nixon (1904-1975) and Agnes Douglas (1909-?). His mother’s family immigrated to Canada from Scotland in 1922 and lived in a large ca. 1900 home in Burquitlam at 9957 Sullivan Road called “Seven Gables” (recently demolished). His grandfather Thomas Douglas, a Coquitlam Councillor and Socialist, was murdered in 1934 in his North Road service station. Al Nixon began his career as a firefighter with the Burnaby Fire Department in 1957, eventually becoming Deputy Fire Chief Operations in 1987 and Fire Chief in 1991, before retiring in 1993. In the mid 1980's Al Nixon became interested in the department’s history after finding a photograph scrapbook at one of the firehalls. It was in very bad condition but he recognized its value and began a project to collect and save photographs, artifacts and stories about the Burnaby Fire Department, a 6 month project that turned into years. The photographs and information gathered by Al Nixon became part of Douglas Penn’s book “Follow that Fire: the history of the Burnaby Fire Department”.

- Rod Fowler returned to university as a mature student in the 1980s after working about twenty years in the field of economics and computerization in business in England, Europe and Western Canada. He graduated with a BA from SFU in both History and Sociology in 1987, his MA degree in Geography in 1989, and his PhD in Cultural Geography at SFU. He taught courses in Geography, Sociology, History and Canadian Studies at several Lower Mainland colleges, before becoming a full time member of the Geography Department at Kwantlen University College.

- Track 4: This portion of the recording pertains to Ken’s recreational activities, his most joyful and most unpleasant memories of his youth, his family’s history, and the Chinese associations his family was involved with. Ken recalls fishing off the access bridges across the tidal ditches on Byrne Rd., and watching sturgeon in them. He mentions spending time at the Luxury Freeze near Burnaby South High School, and at a church near Royal Oak Ave. north of Rumble St. which hosted a basement coffee house a few nights a week for the young people. Ken recalls going to Oilcan Harry’s club in downtown Vancouver when he was older. Ken describes his family’s closeness as his best memory of his youth, sharing his perspective that this closeness came from having a family business. Ken’s worst memory is of losing his grandmother, who had lived with his family. He discusses his extended family and relates how his father was born in Cranbrook because his grandfather, who had come to Canada in the 1880s, was gold mining there at the time. Ken describes the kinds of Chinese associations he remembers in Vancouver, and the services they offered. He recalls the New Year and Spring festivals they hosted. He mentions his family belonging to the Chow association, ‘Chow’ being his mother’s family’s name.

- Track 2: This portion of the recording pertains to the family’s new house, Jean’s parents, and what it was like to live in Vancouver Heights at that time. Jean describes what it was like to live in the house before it was finished, and how the family did their chores. She discusses the changes to chores, such as doing laundry, which occurred as the family adopted new technologies. Jean talks about her siblings, and the relativity of age. She recalls the birth of her younger brother, at home. She describes her parents’ backgrounds and how they met, after immigrating to Vancouver, as part of a close-knit Irish community. Jean recalls what the Vancouver Heights area was like in the 1920s. She mentions her father’s job, and recalls her mother’s daily occupations. She describes what she wore as a child, and the recreational activities of the time.

- Recording is an interview with Jean Hogg conducted by her daughter Teresa Ballentine. Jean talks about her life as a resident of Burnaby from her childhood in the 1910s to widowhood in the 1960s. Margaret Jane (Jean) Wright was born in Burnaby in August 1915, two years after her family moved to 3871 East Pender Street. She was one of five children of Joseph Wright and Wilhelmina Williams. Her first husband was Walter Angus McCallum, who she was married to from 1940-1965; they raised two daughters: June and Teresa. Her second husband's last name was Hogg.

- Sarah Parker (nee Love) and William Parker lived in the Jesse Love farmhouse with their children: Albert, Bill and Elsie from 1925. Elsie married John Hughes in 1942 and they had three children; Brent, Anne and John. Sarah Parker sold the Love farmhouse to her daughter Elsie and husband John Hughes in 1966. Elsie and John Hughes had four children; John Jr., Ann, Brent and Merle. They lived in the Love farmhouse with their son Brent until 1971.

- History
- The first contest for Burnaby's Best Baby was held in September 1930. It was sponsored by the Burnaby Broadcast newspaper, with arrangements made by the Victorian Order of Nurses and judging by the Medical Health Officer and School Board doctor. The first winner was Lois Smith, who was presented with the Broadcast Trophy. A few years earlier, in 1922, a province wide "Better Babies Contest" was held at the New Westminster Exhibition. The babies were judged on their health, nutrition and physical form. Margaret Louise Lovell of Vancouver was the first prize winner of a five dollar coin. Burnaby's own Catherine Corker was another provincial winner in the nineteen twenties. In the early nineteen eighties, Burnaby Village Museum revived the contest as "Burnaby's Better Baby Contest" . The contest was run annually by Burnaby Village Museum until 1994 and was also known as "Burnaby's Best Baby Contest" and "Best Baby in Burnaby". The contest was limited to Burnaby residents who were twelve months and younger.

- Subseries consists of records and photographs created by the Tinkerbell Cooperative Kindergarten. Photographs depict students participating in various classroom activities and field trips.
- History
- Tinkerbell Cooperative Kindergarten was established in 1955. The school was spearheaded by a group of mothers who felt that four and five year olds would benefit from a preschool. In February of that year, they met with the President of the Parent Teachers Association (PTA) and two members from the Helper's Committee of the Cooperative Play Group Association. They began meeting weekly to plan the opening of a local play group. On March 26, the group held a salvage drive to raise funds for equipment, and, with the help of the fathers, raised $142.00. They continued to raise funds though bingo, teas, and dances. Fathers made a stove, kitchen cabinets, easels, hand carved animals, screens, shelves and a wash stand. The Cooperative Kindergarten opened April 18, 1955 with an enrollment of 23 children. Lucy Emma Brown is considered the founder of the school, teaching kindergarten from the school's beginning in 1955 until it closed in 1968.
