A bent wood strip loops over the chain drive to act as additional protection. There is a small, leather, tool kit attached to the back of the leather seat. The hand grips are also leather.

Description: Leather wallet to carry fishing flies, hooks and leaders. The light tan (pig skin ?) leather cover holds pockets at each cover and a variety of pages for holding flies, snelled hooks and leaders (25 pages in total). There are a five packages of various hooks and lures in the end pockets. There is an attached leather strap to hold the wallet closed.

Object History: Used by M. Thomson when growing up in Kerrisdale area of Vancouver.

Marks/Labels: "Melville G. Thomson", stamped in blue ink inside covers of wallet "MADE IN eNGLAND", stamped in the centre of the edge of the outside cover, under the top flap. Hard to see.

Description: White leather baby shoes made by "La Parisette", marked "HAND TURNED PROCESS" in insole, white mesh top, tongue and laces, design of small holes in leather.

Object History: From the Yanko family home in Burnaby. Annie D. Basiuk (later Yanko) was born on February 25, 1902 in Sheho, Saskatchewan (formerly Sheho, North West Territories). Daniel "Dan" Yanko was born in Kobilnicha, Ukraine in 1887 and immigrated to Canada in May or June of 1905. Daniel Yanko married Annie D. Basiuk and had thirteen children together. Their son, John Ivan Yanko was born on the family farm, near Kelliher, Saskatchewan, on June 27, 1923. In grade six, John was pulled out of school to help support the family. Eugenia “Jenny” Haresomovych (later Carman) was born August 8, 1904 in Galecia, Austria. She came to Canada in 1928, when her parents sent her to live with the Austrian consular in Halifax. A year later, she was in The Pas with Albert Edward Carman, with whom she would have three children. Their daughter, Leida Doria "Lillian Doris" Carman was born in The Pas, Manitoba March 24, 1929. Eugenia “Jenny” (Haresomovych) Carman later re-married Joseph Nagy who was born in Hungary in October 3, 1900. Jenny, Joseph and the children moved to Nelson, British Columbia, where Joseph worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway. At the age of twenty, John Yanko met his future wife Lillian Doris Carman while visiting relatives in Burnaby. Lillian received a rail pass because of her dad’s employment with the CPR and at fourteen had gone to visit her Godmother in Burnaby. John Ivan Yanko and Leida Doria "Lillian Doris" Carman were married October 16, 1948 in Nelson, British Columbia and moved into the basement of John’s sister’s house on Union Street. Lillian began working at the downtown Woodward’s store as a cashier in 1948. In 1950, the young couple bought property at 7385 (later renumbered 7391) Broadway in Burnaby and began constructing a house as they could afford it. Knowing she’d be let go if she was pregnant, when Lillian was expecting her first child, Jenny sewed her several versions of the same outfit; they all used the same material, but each was a little bit larger than the last to accommodate her expanding girth. Rhonda, born in 1953 and Charmaine, born in 1955, grew up in the Broadway home. They attended school at Sperling Elementary, and later at Burnaby North high school. Lillian left her job to be a stay-at-home mom when Rhonda was born, but that changed in 1963 when John and Charmaine were in a car accident that left John temporarily unable to work. Joseph Nagy died April 20, 1962; his wife Eugenia “Jenny” (Haresomovych) (Carman) Nagy passed away August 14, 1985. Daniel "Dan" Yanko died in 1976; his wife Annie D. (Basiuk) Yanko died in 1997. John Yanko later returned to work, establishing his own tile setting business and working until age eighty-two. John and Lillian lived out the rest of their married lives on the Broadway property. John Ivan Yanko passed away in 2010; his wife Leida Doria "Lillian Doris" Carman (Carman) Yanko passed away in 2011.

Object History: Salvation Army Guide uniform dress belonging to Virginia Blake, early 1960s. From the 6th Vancouver Salvation Army Guides on Hastings Street. Salvation Army was affiliated with Girl Guides (1937) of Canada until 1998. Worn with brown leather belt, beret, folded triangular company tie. The three white stripes on the right breast pocket indicate that wearer was a company leader. The more stripes you had, the higher your rank. A single white stripe, sewn down the center of the pocket, would have indicated that she was a patrol seconder. Two stripes would indicate that she was a patrol leader. White adhesive tape was used so that the guider didn’t have to unstitch and re-sew the stripes as they gained rank.

Stafford Ague Denby (1882-1957) started peddling shoe findings in 1918 around Vancouver to repair shops around town from the back of an old Ford. Two of his brothers, William Albert (1873-1947) and Melvin Stanley (1879-1953) joined him in 1919 to form Denby Bros & Co. Ltd Leather and Shoe Findings at 163 West Pender. William Gordon Pope started helping out in the shoe store at the age of 10. He eventually ran the store with his cousin, Pat Denby (son of William A. Denby) starting in the 1950s. The store closed in 1974.

Description: Box style buggy with shafts for a single horse. There is no top. The seat is built up from the sides of the box. There is a hinged lid at the rear behind the seat. It is covered with a heavy canvas. The covered space goes through and underthe seat. The box is equiped with a step and a wheel rub plate on each side. There is a foot rest inside the box. The box is suspended from the two eliptical springs, one over each axle. The wheels are black and the running gear and shafts are red. The seat is upholstered in leather in a diamond tufted pattern. The dash is old leather over a metal frame and has nickle plated trim which has been bent on the top left side. There are very faint pin-stipes and flower painted decoration on the black finish of the body.

Measurements: Over all measurements Lth 244 cm. Wth 166 cm. Ht (ground to back of seat) 151 cm.; Box measurements Lth 141 cm. Wth 62 cm. Ht (base of box to seat back) 79 cm.; Shafts measurements Lth 236 cm. Wth (at base of shafts) 102 cm.

Description: Trunk or travelling hatbox for up to six hats. The fiber board trunk is reinforced with leather binding at the seams. It has a carrying handle at the top and two straps and buckles at the front with a hasp at the centre. The lid is hinged at the back. The trunk is black with brown leather binding. The inside is lined with gray and white stripped fabric. The left corner of the lid is torn and the bottom of the trunk has suffered water damage. There are metal clips in each of the sides, bottom and inside of the lid to hold a frame for holding a hat. Up six hats could be accommodated with the hat crowns to the centre of the trunk. "A.S.H." is painted on the top of the trunk and there are travel stickers for "TRANS CANADA / AIR LINES", "ALLAN LINE", steamships and "SOUTHERN RAILWAY", in England. There are the remnants of other stickers on the trunk. Mrs. Hill travelled back and forth to England on several occasions, the last time in 1948 when she flew in her early 90's.

Object History: All items are from the L. Claude Hill family and are associated with Anne Sarah Hill (nee Kenrick) and Kitty Hill. Mrs. Hill travelled back and forth to England on several occasions, possibly in 1905 and again possibly in the 1920's. She travelled in 1931 and the last time in 1948 when she flew Trans Canada Airlines (TCA) in her early 90's

Object History: The donor's family were early settlers to Burnaby, and he worked for the BCER as an electrician. Donor was the original owner of the property that the Burnaby Village Museum now occupies. The writing slope was used widely in the 1800s. It was mainly used in the late 1700s during colonial expeditions, and military travel. It became very popular in Victorian times for lay people and used in many homes. It provided a portable desk, complete with a soft writing surface (felt or leather), compartments for ink, pens, and paper. It was considered to be a personal item, rather than a household one.
