interviews, offered leads o n contemporaries, sent informative periodicals a n d clippings, tracked d o w n photographs — then awaited the birthing of Pioneer Tales w i t h rare h u m o r a n d patience. As a result of the gold rush, Great Britain claimed the mainland of British Columbia as a colony and began setting up its own government and laws and encouraging settlers to make it their permanent home. Some Chinese men worked in the coal mining
