Scope and Content
Fonds consists of personal and professional records, notebooks and papers pertaining to George Jeffery, who served first as a solider, then a Burnaby police constable, and finally a penitentiary guard at Oakalla before retiring in 1945. Also included in the fonds are May Day programmes, invitations, and twenty-one photographs most of which pertain to May Day, Diamond Jubilee of Confederation celebrations, and the Burnaby Police department. The fonds is divided into two series - a photograph series and a manuscript series.
History/Biography
George Jeffery was a well-respected Burnaby police constable, having served first as a solider. Upon joining the police force in 1912, he was appointed to patrol the Central Park district, a position he held for twenty-two years. From his experiences confronting young shoplifters, he realized that the reason groups of boys were getting into trouble was due to a lack of recreational activities on offer. To combat this, he single-handedly organized the Burnaby Athletics Association in an old barn behind the Royal Oak Hotel, turning it into a competitive boxing ring and gym. Harriet and George Jeffery lived most of their married life in Central Park district with their three daughters; Patricia (married William Poole) a teacher in Burnaby prior to her marriage, Winnifred (married Fred Shaughnessy) Burnaby's 1929 May Queen, and Elsie (married Art Winterford) who excelled at badminton. In 1935 when the B.C. Provincial police replaced the Burnaby Police, Constable Jeffery quit the force (in order to stay in Burnaby) and instead worked at Oakalla Prison farm, retiring in 1945.
