Fonds consists of seven boxes of textual records including; scrapbooks, receipts, statements, publications and information on the restoration of the Parker Carousel by the Lower Mainland Association of Friends of the Vancouver Carousel (Friends of the Carousel).
History/Biography
The no. 119 “Carry-Us-All” Carousel was built in 1912 by C.W. Parker an amusement ride manufacturer in Leavenworth, Kansas. Fred Leggett bought no.119 for “Lone Star” Amusement Co. in Houston Texas, but it was returned to the Parker Factory in 1915 for reasons unknown. Back at the factory it was upgraded from Standard style to Superior and electrified (this explains the mix of carving styles, some pre-dating 1913). It was used in the San Francisco area until 1936 when it was shipped to “Happyland” in Vancouver’s Hastings Park (home of the Pacific National Exhibition) then passed to “Playland” at Hastings Park in 1957. In 1988 the Carousel was scheduled to be broken up and sold at auction. Concerned citizens formed the Lower Mainland Association of the Friends of the Vancouver Carousel to save it. Through fundraising the Friends of the Carousel were able to acquire the Parker Carousel no. 119. Between 1990 and 1993 Friends of the Carousel were able to it completely restore, repaint and rebuild the Carousel. The City of Burnaby, Province of British Columbia and Friends of the Carousel contributed to the construction of a new building at Burnaby Village Museum designed to house it. Enterprising volunteers salvaged the maple hardwood gymnasium floor at the Oakalla penitentiary just before it was demolished and used it to rebuild the Carousel platform. The association also acquired and restored a Wurlitzer 146B organ. And on March 27, 1993, No. 119 moved to the Don Wrigley Pavilion at the Burnaby Village Museum, the Pavilion having been named after the president of the Friends of the Carousel for his coordination of the restoration project. Mrs. Norvie Frame daughter of the original owner of the carousel Mr. Fred Leggett came with her family from Texas to attend the official opening. The Burnaby Village Museum exhibit “The Story of Parker #119” and the video “Labour of Love: The Saving of Number 119” and their accompanying publications were created by the association.

Description
This is a Wurlitzer Military Band Organ, Style 146B. Built by the Rudolph Wurlitzer Company, ca 1925. The organ is supposed to recreate the sound of a 20-piece military band, with percussion instruments that include bass drum, snare drums, cymbals, and xylophones, as well as pipes to reproduce the sounds of trumpets, trombones, flutes, and violins. This band organ is operated by paper rolls based on Wurlitzer's unique, 46 note roll scale, "Style 150". Our Model 146B has duplex roll frames, allowing continuous playing, one roll rewinds as the other is playing. An electric motor mounted on the top uses a belt to drive a crankshaft that powers both the air bellows that feed the various music pipes as well as the roll mechanism. The band organ was originally intended to be used with a carousel out of doors. A perferated sheet of plexie glass has been placed over the front opening to reduce the volume of the instrument inside the carousel building.
Object History
The band organ was purchased and restored by the Friends of the Carousel to replace the original organ that had been sold before the carousel was acquired for the Burnaby Village Museum. The Friends of the Carousel bought this machine from a collector in Spokane, Washington. He had obtained it from a closed down travelling carnival company in Reno, Nevada. They had used it with a carousel in the American mid-west.

Part of C.W. Parker Carousel, # 119. Carousel horse No. 1, "Captain Julius." "Jumper" style, back legs extended, erect neck, tucked-in head, mouth open, mane swept across neck, erect ears facing out to the side. This horse may not be a true Parker. It has been considered to be a Stein and Goldstein type. It may also be a "hybrid" with the larger and different style head usually found on Stein and Goldstein horses, although the nostrils are different. Some of the body carving (mane, forelock and trappings) are in the Parker style. Colour: Percheron type dapple grey, cream mane and tail. Trappings: Black-toned stippled saddle and breast shield, with gold trim. Sea monster on the back of the cantle. Two blankets under the saddle in shades of blue turquoise, trimmed with gold and burgundy, gold fringes. Blue breast collar, burgundy trim. Steel colour armour on shoulder and lower blanket. Blue turquoise bridle with gold concho and amber jewel. Clear and amber, round or square facetted jewel.

Carousel horse. Part of the C.W. Parker Carousel on display at the Burnaby Village Museum. Name: Originally named Julius Caesar, this was the lead horse on the PNE Carousel. It was one of the horses transported in the Wrigley station wagon to all the fundraising events, and the Wrigleys sponsored this horse that they had become so attached to. The name comes from Chief Fund Raiser Don Wrigley's nickname among the volunteers as The Captain, and Julius because of Wrigley's penchant for quoting from Shakespeare. Sponsors: Don and Dorothy Wrigley and Family

Carousel horse. Part of the C.W. Parker Carousel on display at the Burnaby Village Museum. Name: "The name Nipoti is Italian for grandchildren - honouring our grandchildren who have Italian great-grandparents interlaced throughout our family tree. The Italian connection has its roots in the USA, where a great-grandmother lived, and from where (of different fami¬ly roots) a great grandfather emigrated." Coincidentally the US flag is prominently featured in the decoration of this horse. (Many are familiar with "nepotism," meaning favouritism shown to persons related to those in high office.) Sponsors: Bill and Ruth Copeland.
