History
Annie Urbanovits Boulanger’s parents emigrated from Hungary to Toronto: Louis in 1925 and Irene in 1930. The couple married in Toronto and later moved to Vancouver. During WWII, Louis worked in the Vancouver Shipyards, followed by Nichols Chemical Company in Barnet for 15 years. While the Urbanovits family lived in Cloverdale, Louis commuted to Kask’s Camp in Barnet until they moved to Burnaby in 1951 to an old farm on Napier Street. Between 1951 and 1956 Annie completed her BA degree, majoring in chemistry and english with a minor in physical education, and obtained her teaching diploma at UBC. She taught for four years in various locations in BC before marrying and moving to Manitoba and Ottawa. She and her husband and five children returned to Burnaby in 1964 to a home on Government Street to be close to family. The couple later had another two children. Annie Boulanger became involved in the community first through her children’s school, initiating and teaching french classes in Seaforth School in 1969, and supporting the development of gymnastics in school and as a municipal program. Her interest in Archives lead to doing oral histories for John Adams, curator of Heritage Village (later Burnaby Village Museum), and for SFU Archives. She became a long time member of the Burnaby Writers’ Club in the 1970s, taking a course in writing non-fiction from Chris Potter. In 1983 Annie Boulanger joined the Burnaby Arts Council, becoming President in 1985. She was involved in lobbying the municipality for better monetary support and facilities for the arts and for the creation of a Municipal Arts Policy. She continued to promote the arts in Burnaby through her appointment to Burnaby’s Visual Arts Advisory Board in 1997, her arts journalism, writing regular book and theatre reviews for the local newspaper, and other activities. She was a member of the Burnaby Centennial Committee and was one of the editors of the book “Burnaby Centennial Anthology”. She is also the author of "A Carousel is Magic: The Saving of Parker # 119".

Description
Autograph Book - Booklet -- [1915]. Autograph book produced by Rose & Co at 44 Above Bar, Southhampton. The book was a gift to Mrs. Orman from the Teachers and Children of All Saints Sunday School, Eastleigh, Southhampton, upon her departure to Canada. The first four pages lists all the teachers and children's names. The front cover of the book is green with two painted purple flowers and "Autographs" embossed in white on the bottom right.
Object History
This accession appears to be connected to the Orman family. Ada Leila Orman was born June 2, 1901 in Eastleigh, Hampshire, England. According to the 1915 Census, the Orman family came to Canada in 1911 and settled in Calgary. Father Willoughby Henry Orman is listed there as working as a C.P.R. foreman, while mother Daisy Marie (Harklett) Orman worked at home. Older sister Daisy Hilda (Targett) Orman, worked as a stenographer. At five years old Leila began a long fight with a crippling type of rheumatoid arthritis. By the time she was thirteen, she experienced completely ankylosed joints. Her family travelled all over hoping to find a cure, but to no avail. While living in Calgary, Leila developed an interest in painting, knitting, and composing her own poems. She began writing news articles for the Calgary Daily Herald in the 1930s, and her first sonnet published was in that paper on August 28, 1934. She had a strong interest in the arts, often writing about music and the visual arts. While living in Calgary, she became a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club as well as a member of the Canadian Author’s Association. Three members of the family moved to B.C. when Willoughby retired, ca. 1938. In the 1940 BC Directory, the family are listed as living at 407 Campbell Street, Burnaby. Willoughby died in Burnaby in 1945. Daisy Marie died in 1955 after living 15 years in Burnaby. Her address at the time of her death is listed as 407 Rosewood Avenue, Burnaby. Leila was living with her at that time. Older sister Daisy Hilda married Edgar Harold Targett in 1922. They moved to B.C. from Alberta some years after the other three members of the family (ca. 1962). Daisy Hilda died in 1972. Her address at the time of her death was 7969 Rosewood Avenue, Burnaby. Leila wrote on a typewriter with two sticks to type out the letters. She was an avid reader and was able to turn the pages with a special stick with elastic bands wound around the ends. Canadian novelist Maida Parlow French became her lifelong friend and encouraged her to write her own autobiography - unfortunately it was never finished. Leila wrote “The Giving Heart” in October of 1948. By 1952, she was writing a column for the British Columbia Saturday Magazine entitled “Across the Board” with the intention of inspiring other “incapacitated folk” to live up to their full potential, “If [she] could reach a few people, and encourage them to reach up and out, [she] should feel the effort well worthwhile.” A member of the St. Alban’s Prayer Healing Fellowship group, Leila wrote the “Christian Manifesto for World Peace” in 1963. The Prayer Group met twice monthly at one of the members’ homes and undertook to pray daily for the sick and for world peace. After Leila’s mother died in 1955, Leila’s friend Jeanie Brown kept house for her and was her constant companion. Jeanie Brown and Leila lived together for over thirteen years until an accident sent Leila to hospital and later to nursing home where she died on February 16, 1976.

History
Rose Croucher was born to Ann Eliza "Annie" (b. August 1861, d. 1962) and R. Coucher in January 1895. In 1907, the Croucher family moved to British Columbia. As a student, Rose studied geometrical drawing using Blair’s Canadian Drawing Series workbooks. On on February 21, 1914, Rose married James Oakes Bancroft in Vancouver, BC. Together they had three children: James A. (b. 1916 or 1917), Rosie (date unknown), and George E. (b. August 1927). The Bancroft family were poultry farmers throughout the early 1900s, transporting their farmed eggs from Burnaby to the Hudson’s Bay Company Vancouver using the British Columbia Electric Railway system. Rose Bancroft also served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Central Park Poultry Co-op Association in the 1920s until her husband's death in 1930 at the age of 42. In the late thirties and early forties, while James A. Bancroft was stationed in Calgary with the Royal Canadian Air Force, his younger siblings lived together with their mother and grandmother at 1963 21st Avenue in Burnaby. Rosie Bancroft studied French and English history in Social Studies in 1937; her brother George studied the seasons in General Science II in 1942. Rose died in 1965 at the age of 76.

PER BOX"."
Object History
As a produce buyer for Kelly Douglas, Cecil Lee worked closely with local farmers along Marine Drive and in the Fraser Valley. The Burnaby company was one of the largest food distributors in Canada. In the mid-1970s, Lee was asked to oversee the import of Chinese mandarin oranges into Canada. Until that time, mandarin oranges had come from Japan and were sold in the winter, especially at Christmas. When the Japanese market could no longer keep up with demand, Kelly Douglas looked to China. The company relied on Lee’s cultural knowledge to build this very profitable part of their business. Lee designed the cardboard Chinese mandarin orange box to replace wooden containers. The iconic design required no glue or staples, making it possible for farmers to assemble and pack the boxes as they picked the oranges.

Photograph of Charles Bruce Patterson and his first wife, Elva Patterson.
Charles Bruce Patterson (called Bruce) built many early homes in the Edmonds district of Burnaby. He also built the Sperling Avenue School in 1913. For a time he was put in charge of Vulcan Iron Works of New Westminster, a business owned by his father Dugald Campbell Patterson Sr. Bruce quickly developed a passion for wrought iron work which would last his entire lifetime. Some years after the Vulcan Iron Works property was absorbed into the Dominion Bridge Company, Bruce opened a smaller iron works operation in the Arrow Transfer building on Granville Island. He named this company Vulcan Metal Works Ltd. Here, he made a variety of artistic railings for homes, churches and apartment buildings and drew inspiration from both Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. In addition to his wrought iron railings, he also designed and created many other architectural pieces which included iron patio furniture, leaded glass window panels for French doors, headboards, and decorative designs for the exteriors of clocks. Bruce also built and renovated numerous homes throughout the lower mainland. Bruce married Elva Eleanore Elliott on July 17, 1918. After Elva’s death he married again at the age of 82. His second wife’s name was Martha May (Bird) Summers. [Biography provided by Raymond Reitsma.]
