March 31, 1925, "volunteers were relied on to man
the fire hoses and eventually it was hoped a bell or tri-
angle would sound to summon male residents to lend
assistance." Some of the early volunteers included
William Banks, Arnold Jones, Fraser George and
Basil Honour.

George Leaf was an early Burnaby resident having arrived as child in 1888 with his mother and stepfather, Jack Burgess, to settle in the area that would become East Burnaby. George went on to open one of the first businesses in Burnaby, the George Leaf General Store.
