- History
- Annie Urbanovits Boulanger’s parents emigrated from Hungary to Toronto: Louis in 1925 and Irene in 1930. The couple married in Toronto and later moved to Vancouver. During WWII, Louis worked in the Vancouver Shipyards, followed by Nichols Chemical Company in Barnet for 15 years. While the Urbanovits family lived in Cloverdale, Louis commuted to Kask’s Camp in Barnet until they moved to Burnaby in 1951 to an old farm on Napier Street. Between 1951 and 1956 Annie completed her BA degree, majoring in chemistry and english with a minor in physical education, and obtained her teaching diploma at UBC. She taught for four years in various locations in BC before marrying and moving to Manitoba and Ottawa. She and her husband and five children returned to Burnaby in 1964 to a home on Government Street to be close to family. The couple later had another two children. Annie Boulanger became involved in the community first through her children’s school, initiating and teaching french classes in Seaforth School in 1969, and supporting the development of gymnastics in school and as a municipal program. Her interest in Archives lead to doing oral histories for John Adams, curator of Heritage Village (later Burnaby Village Museum), and for SFU Archives. She became a long time member of the Burnaby Writers’ Club in the 1970s, taking a course in writing non-fiction from Chris Potter. In 1983 Annie Boulanger joined the Burnaby Arts Council, becoming President in 1985. She was involved in lobbying the municipality for better monetary support and facilities for the arts and for the creation of a Municipal Arts Policy. She continued to promote the arts in Burnaby through her appointment to Burnaby’s Visual Arts Advisory Board in 1997, her arts journalism, writing regular book and theatre reviews for the local newspaper, and other activities. She was a member of the Burnaby Centennial Committee and was one of the editors of the book “Burnaby Centennial Anthology”. She is also the author of "A Carousel is Magic: The Saving of Parker # 119".

- Scope and Content
- Item consists of a video recording of a live Zoom webinar hosted by Burnaby Village Museum Curator, Jane Lemke. The webinar is titled "Are We Really Changing? Reflections on Reconciliation" and is presented by Brandon Gabriel, visual arts from the Kwantlen First Nation. The Zoom webinar is the sixth in a series of six "Neighbourhood Speaker Series" webinars exploring a range of topics shared by Indigenous speakers and knowledge keepers that were presented and made available to the public between April 27 and May 12, 2021. The live webinar was also made available on the Burnaby Village Museum's facebook page. Community members were invited to participate by bringing questions and comments during the interactive online sessions. In this webinar, Brandon supports his presentation with slides and explores the following questions; If we have not changed the way we introduce ourselves to each other and this land then what are we reconciling?" and "If resource exploitation, racism and colonization continue today, how can we change?" Brandon Gabriel, mixed-media artist and activist, looks back at some highlights of his twenty seven year artistic journey and shares what you can do to tackle reconciliation in your own life. Brandon presents counter narratives speaking to the importance of: Land; Languages; Colonial Annihilation and Indigenous Resurgence. Brandon pauses half way through his presentation to ask and reflect on the question "How far back do you know your ancestors on your mother's side?". While listeners are reflecting, Brandon shares a recording of Dennis Leon of Kwantlen First Nation performing the song “True Love”. Following this, Brandon takes questions from the audience and comments on the importance of matriarchal lineage in indigenous culture. In the second half of the presentation, Brandon talks about his own art and shares examples of Indigenous artists work including: Bill Reid, Zacharias Kunuk, Marianne Nicholson; Brian Jungan and Rebecca Bellmore. Following the presentation, Brandon Gabriel takes questions from the audience that are moderated by the host, Jane Lemke.

- Description
- A large box containing a audio-amp, a wooden triangular prism with a decorative round speaker, and six smaller rectangular boxes. All are made of a light wood, and have different functions.
- Object History
- This audio-amplifier set was used by Mr. Edward A. Fountain, who was appointed as Civil Defense Coordinator on May 5th, 1952. He also built the wooden boxes which contain each part of the set. The Burnaby Civil Defense Department was established in order to disseminate information guiding the public on how to react in response to the impending threat of nuclear war and Russian bombers. In the early 1950’s, this education centered primarily on evacuation, as members of the public were expected to prepare and essentially fend for themselves in the event of a nuclear attack. These pieces of audio technology are believed to have been used at Civil Defense rallies in Burnaby, which Edward Fountain would have been involved in as the department director. According to Burnaby City Council meeting records, music and defense operation demonstrations were commonplace at such rallies, and are examples of what this set was used for.
