Subseries consists of photographs of Burnaby Lake compiled by Nancy Peter. Subseries also contains one school report: "A Study of Burnaby taken from the Point of View of Education."
History
Nancy M. Bailey was the vice principal of Lord Tweedsmeer Hight School in Cloverdale, BC. In 1941, she met Laurence J. Peter, an industrial arts teacher at the school. In 1943 the couple married and in 1947 they moved to Burnaby. Laurence and Nancy had four children: two boys, John and Ted, and two girls, Alice and Margaret. The family was actively involved in the Burnaby community with Laurence and Nancy taking part in local politics and community activities and their children participating in Boy Scouts and Girl Guides and music lessons. All four children graduated from Burnaby North High School and in 1970, Ted and Alice completed their studies at British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). They worked local jobs in the community including on the construction of the Burnaby Mountain Golf Course. Laurence worked as a Mental Health Coordinator (Special Counselor) in the Vancouver School System and in 1959, Nancy joined the staff at the newly opened Burnaby Central Senior Secondary School as a Math teacher. She later became the head of the Mathematics Department at the school. The couple continued their education at summer school at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, where Nancy completed her Masters Degree in 1964 and Laurence his Doctoral degree in 1963. Laurence joined the faculty of the University of British Columbia in 1965 and received the WSU Regents’ Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1980. The couple separated in 1965 and Laurence moved to California in 1966 to teach at the University of Southern California. Nancy continued to teach at Burnaby South, until her retirement in 1978 after 30 years as head of the Mathematics Department at Burnaby Central. She was an active member of the Burnaby Historical Society for many years. Nancy passed away in Nanaimo near her family on April 21, 2013 at the age of 97.

Included in this file is the contact information for the Burnaby-Willingdon NDP Constituency Association ("Fax - 437-5836 / Phone - 437-5700 / 4561 Kingsway / B'by / V5H 2B3") and three sheets relating to the cost of lawn signs from 1990 to 1991 for the Joan Sawicki campaign. Also included is a map of the federal Burnaby-Douglas riding (ca. 1990). Also included is typed copy of R. A. McMath's Comments on "A Report of Saskatchewan's Socialist Government" which appeared as a paid advertisement in both Vancouver daily papers on election day August 27, 1969. McMath challenges the "Report" which contains excerpts of a speech by Ross Thatcher, Saskatchewan's Liberal Premier, on the CCF and the NDP. Also included is a informational flyer on the BC Parliament Buildings from 1969 (28th Parliament, 3rd Session) and lists the members of Parliament. Also included is a booklet from Simon Fraser University listing the donors, which Hazel Simnett is one of, from July 1, 1989 to June 30, 1990. Also is an envelope in which the following was found: 1990 BC Election Act, three sheets referring to Joan Sawicki's election expenses, Canada Post receipt, report on Joan Sawicki's campaign from 1991, list of Burnaby Willingdon team, notice of nomination meeting in 1990, BC election calendar, 1990 Guide to the Elections Act of British Columbia, faxed letter from John Pollard to campaign managers, six sheets of Appointment of Scrutineer (one blank, rest signed by Hazel Simnett), fax of Provincial General Election Calendar of Events, receipt for nomination paper for Joan Sawicki, receipt for declaration of candidate for Joan Sawicki and two copies of photocopy of signatures on Nomination Paper for Joan Sawicki. Also included is Burnaby-Willingdon NDP Constituency Association Minutes of March 14, 1996 Executive Meeting.

The sister city movement gained momentum in North America after the Second World War with a goal to encourage cooperation between international communities. Burnaby became a part of that movement in the hopes that sister city relationships would create meaningful industrial, economic, educational, and cultural ties between Burnaby citizens and those of other countries. Burnaby’s first sister city was Kushiro, Japan. The formal agreement for the establishment of a sister city relationship between the two communities was signed on September 9, 1965. Following this twinning, the two cities have enjoyed numerous exchanges and visits, the records of which are contained within this series. While the sister city status between Burnaby and Kushiro has endured for over three decades, Burnaby has also maintained shorter-lived relationships with Loughborough, England and El Zapotal, El Salvador. The 1986 twinning with Loughborough was undertaken to recognize the importance of that city to the history of Burnaby in that Loughborough was the ancestral home of Burnaby’s namesake, Robert Burnaby. The twinning between Burnaby and El Zapotal came after Mayor Copeland visited El Salvador in the early 1990s and returned with a desire to see the citizens of Burnaby assist in the rebuilding of that community after a 12-year civil war was brought to an end in 1992. In 1998, Burnaby entered into two North American Sister City relationships with Mesa, Arizona and Gatineau, Quebec, and in 2010, it formulated a sister city agreement with Hwaseong, Korea. In 2011, a further agreement was signed with Zhongshan, China which expanded a previous “friendship” agreement into a Sister City relationship. Series also consists of records related to Friendship Agreements with Taichung (Taiwan), Dongcheng District (formerly Chongwen District) of Beijing (P.R. China), Dongli District of Tianjin, Changshu (P.R. China), and Kunming, Yunnan Province (P.R. China); as well as Memorandums of Understanding with a number of other cities. The records in this series reflect both the actions that led up to the creation of these relationships as well as the numerous cultural, economic and educational exchanges that have been undertaken between the communities over the years.
