History
In November 1911, a small group of people met at Morton Hall on Edmonds Street, Burnaby to organize a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in Canada. David J. Gordon, a student from Westminster Hall Theological College, was in charge. By 1912, a building was erected on two lots and the name was given “Gordon Presbyterian Church.” A new sanctuary was built in 1956 and due to the increase in the congregation, a Christan Education Centre was added in 1974. The longest minister to serve the congregation was Reverend George Philps and his wife Margaret. After 21 years, he retired in 1987. In April of 1988, Reverend Charles Scott began serving. Six months later, a fire broke out in the centre portion of the complex. For many months, while reconstruction continued, worship services were held at the Edmonds Community Centre for the Retired. In 2001, Reverend Cal MacLeod and his wife Robin joined the congregation. Marie Douglas, wife of retired minister Reverend R. J. Douglas and Ellen Douglas, mother of missionary to India started the first Women’s Missionary Auxiliary in 1932. The Ladies Aid Societies were an active force in the Gordon Presbyterian Church. In 1957, the original Ladies Aid became known as the Margaret Hall Circle, named after Margaret Philps’ mother, who had been an active member. For many years, the COC, Explorers and CGIT were very active and Sunday School classes have been in operation since the beginning.

Subseries consists of one scrapbook containing newspaper clippings, photographs, and notes created by the Housewives' Holiday series which took place at Bonsor Hall during the early 1960s.
History
The idea of having a "Housewives' Holiday" in South Burnaby originated in February of 1959 when Mary Forsyth attended a Vancouver "Y's" Housewives Holiday and wanted to create one for South Burnaby. Mary Forsyth, Ruth Turner, and Faye Reagh formed a committee in February of 1960 and began planning. Dorothy Turnbull became their treasurer in June. The Housewives' Holiday (a branch of the Clinton-Glenwood Recreation Association) series took place at the then newly renovated Bonsor Hall with events such as "Keep Fit," dancing, Judo, table tennis, and "Living and Learning" as well as guest speakers from places such as the Burnaby School Board, the Metropolitan Health Centre, as well as a nursery offered for children ages three to five. Held each Thursday from 10 am to 2:30 pm, the first session ran from October 6 to December 8 1960.

History
Emily Brew married William James Phillips in Douglas on the Isle of Man in 1884. Their first child, James William Phillips “Jim” was born in Douglas on the Isle of Man, on November 18, 1886. His brother, John George "George" was born July 27, 1890 and their sister Emily Brew "Amy" was born ca. 1892. The family of five arrived in the Capitol Hill area of North Burnaby in 1910, and built their first home on Ellesmere Avenue. They were the second family to move to the area. Jim Phillips was a carpenter by trade, but was better known as an avid amateur photographer and painter, his photographs serving as an important record of early Burnaby. He and his brother both served in World War I, but only George returned. Their sister married John William "Jack" Holmes on November 25, 1914 and had two sons, Douglas and Fred in 1926. George also married and had a son, James Brew Phillips. Emily (Brew) Phillips died January 20, 1915 at the age of 53. Her husband William James Phillips died December 2 of that same year at the age of 55. James William "Jim" Phillips served as a Private in the Canadian Infantry (British Columbia Regiment), and died overseas on August 15, 1917 at the age of 30. His sister, Emily Brew "Amy" Phillips Holmes died July 22, 1976 at the age of 84.

History
Kathleen Moxham was born in England in 1911. She emigrated from England with her family in 1912, settling first in New Westminster, BC. A year later, they moved to a large house on Sixth Street in Burnaby, BC. Kathleen’s father, Godfrey Moxham, worked as a contractor. He cleared land and built houses, including the Brook House (now the Normanna Rest Home). He died April 8, 1968. Kathleen attended Edmonds Elementary School and later Burnaby South High School. She remembers going on strike with fellow Edmonds Elementary students in 1919 when teachers refused to allow students a spring holiday after so much time had been lost to school closures brought on by the influenza epidemic earlier in the school year.

History
Kay Rorison North was one of the twin daughters of Burnaby carpenter William Rorison and Alma Cropley Rorison. Kay and her twin Evelyn were nine month old when her parents moved them and her two older brothers, Bill and Hugh, to Burnaby in 1922. Her younger brother, John, was not yet born. Kay's grandmother, Matilda Louise Cropley, bought three acres of land on Marine Drive (then called River Road) in South Burnaby and William built two houses on the property: one for his family and, six years later, one for his wife's widowed mother. They built a barn and kept cows, goats and the occasional pig. Her father built wooden toys and board games for the children. Kay went to Riverway West School with thirty-one other children, with grades one to four taught together in the one-room school house. She also attended Sunday school at Riverway mission for eight years and taught it there for another fifteen. Kay and her husband Doug have two daughters.

History
In 1959, Commissioner George McLean, a former Alderman, first met with the elder citizens of northern Burnaby who, not wanting to be programmed into other recreation centres, expressed their need for their own community building. Over the next decade, representatives of the O.A.P.O., Senior Citizen Associations, and the existing elder citizen’s programme at Willingdon Heights met with members of the Parks and Recreation Commission and staff to discuss what type of facility was needed to meet the recreational needs of the retired population in North Burnaby. In 1971, the Burnaby Parks and Recreation Commission authorized the building of the Confederation Community Centre for the Retired (also known as Confederation House) at 4585 Albert Street. Architect Norman S. Jones designed the building with the assistance of Consultant W.D. McKinnon of Industrial Construction Centre Ltd. A sod turning ceremony was held on Friday, June 11, 1971. A minimal mandatory membership fee was established in order to establish a membership list. As it was then, and continues to be today, anyone fifty or over and retired is eligible for membership. The Centre offers exercise classes, credit and non-credit college courses, drop-in, club activities and social events.
