Administrative History
At a young age Yoshino (nee Tamura) Yamamoto learned to make patterns and sew by attending classes at a tailoring school in Aomoir-ken, Japan. In 1952, her husband Tokio Yamamoto bought a sewing machine (BV016.11.1) as a gift. In 1958, Tokio, Yoshino and their two daughters, Reiko and Akemi, travelled to Vancouver, British Columbia on the Hikawa-maru ship. Among Yoshino's possessions was her sewing machine, which was re-assembled when the family moved into their new home in East Vancouver. Yoshino spent many hours sewing and altering clothes for her family, and making cushions, curtains and quilts with her trusty sewing machine. Her husband, Tokio Yamamoto was born May 29, 1923 in Cumberland, BC. He was interned during the Second World War and 'Repatriated' to Japan after the war. Worked for GIs in Japan in the Amori-Ken region. Married Yoshino Tamura and had two daughters in Japan before returning to Canada.

Scope and Content
The video depicts the challenges of film maker Alfred Woo’s physical, social, and cultural transformation to a foreign country. Sentimentally prior to departing Hong Kong in 1954, Alfred was presented a fountain pen by some of his grade two classmates, a souvenir that he has cherished all these years despite losing contact with them long ago. In his seniority, he muses poignantly about the symbolism of this writing instrument and shares his wonderment about the destiny of these childhood benefactors.
History/Biography
Immigrating from Hong Kong to Canada as a child, Alfred Woo easily assimilated into the Canadian way of life at an early age and has enjoyed the best of both worlds. A law graduate, his professional career included service as a Crown Counsel, securities administrator, corporate executive, and as private practitioner. He also served in the Canadian Army (Reserve Force) as a legal officer and an artillery officer before being honorably discharged at the rank of Major. A Burnaby resident for over 30 years, and now retired, he continues to volunteer helping seniors, a community service club, and a veterans group.

1 photograph : b&w ; 6.6 x 11.2 cm
Scope and Content
Photograph of people on the front steps of the home of Arthur Lobley located on Marlborough Avenue, off Kingsway. Arthur Lobley is sitting in the front, and the rest of the group are standing behind him. They are identified as (left to right) Mrs. A. Lobley (Dolly) in hat, Winnie Patterson, Emma Sully, and Jimmy Fitzpatrick. Beside them, a dog, identified as "old Dan" is sitting and looking towards the group. An annotation on the back of the photo reads: "I will send you some snaps of the wedding if they come out O.K."
Administrative History
Arthur Lobley immigrated to Canada in 1892. He married Dora Cooke (identified as Mrs. A. Lobley in photograph), likely in England. Arthur worked for the CPR and the couple lived at 2619 Marlborough Avenue in Burnaby. Along with his brother, Charles, Arthur was an early resident of the Central Park neighbourhood of Burnab. According to George Green's book, "History of Burnaby," pg. 134, the Lobleys were an early pioneer family in Burnaby. Arthur Lobley is credited for opening the Royal Oak Road to the tram station at Royal Oak in 1897. Dora's aunt, Emma Sully and her husband John Sully were lodgers at the Lobley house on Marlborough Street. Dora's cousin, Winnifred Davis Patterson was also a lodger until her marriage to Carl Anderson in 1940.
