Scope and Content: Mary Davis and her mother Edith Finney walking hand and hand down a busy commercial street.

History: Mary Davis was born February 3, 1910 in Stafford, England to Sam and Edith Finney and came to Canada as a child. Her family settled in Saskatchewan. She married her first husband, Clifford Reynolds Hamilton in 1940 in Rossland BC and was subsequently divorced in 1949 in Vancouver BC. She moved to Burnaby somtime between 1940 and the mid-1950's. Mary owned Davis Confectionary with her second husband (presumably named Davis) at the corner of Beresford and MacPherson. The store acted as a grocery store and also a drug store. Mary and her husband owned the store in the 1950's /1960's. Mary passed away in 2001, and had no children. Photograph was taken by famous Vancouver street photographer Foncie Pulice. Foncie began working as a street photographer in 1934 and retired in 1979. Foncie died in 2003.

Scope and Content: Christmas card to the Adolf family featuring a photograph of the Mawhinney family home at 908 Burris Avenue (later 6011 Buckingham). The home is pictured at the end of a long driveway. House number "908" is nailed to a tree. Large evergreens line one side of the driveway. There are lot of leaves on the ground but still some leaves on the trees.

History: Local farmers William Alexander Mawhinney (1870-1953) and Annie Josephine Mawhinney (née Sutcliff, 1871-1956) built this residence as their retirement home. It was the last of several houses built in the immediate vicinity by members of the Mawhinney family between 1909 and 1930. Born in Ireland, William Mawhinney first came to Burnaby to help his brother Isaiah establish his fruit farm. Due to his farm management experience, in 1908 William became foreman of the Avalon estate at Deer Lake that was owned by F.J. Hart. When he retired in 1930, William had fifty years of experience as a fruit and grain farmer.This house is situated on its lot at an angle, rather than parallel to the street, to take advantage of the view of wooded Buckingham Creek that runs through the northeast section of the property.

People came from miles around to purchase strawberries, blueberries, tomatoes and honey. In 1962 the Wuzinski property was expropriated by the Municipality of Burnaby, and the family purchased another property nearby. They started a new garden, brought the bees, and transplanted several trees to the new property.

Scope and Content: Photograph of Valley Bakery at Adele-Rae Florists' former location on Hastings Street. A car is parked out front of store on left of photograph.

History: Valley Bakery was started in Burnaby in 1957 by Gerardus "George" Jacobus Kuyer. George started as an apprentice baker in Holland at age 13 and came from the Netherlands to Canada in 1954. He originally opened Valley Bakery at 4059 Hastings Street, near Gilmore Avenue. The bakery later moved to four other premises over the years, before opening at the present location at 4058 East Hastings Street. Valley Bakery brought European baking to the Burnaby area. Son Jack Kuyer bought the bakery from his father in 1979. Jack was an early adopter of using computers to track inventory in the bakery. As a strong community advocate, Jack was one of a few business owners that worked to halt a Department of Highways plan to rid Hastings Street of all street level parking. He was also integral in launching Hats Off Day, a festival designed for local merchants to show their appreciation for their customers. As of 2019, Hats Off Day is Burnaby's largest street festival. In 2015, the Burnaby Board of Trade inducted Valley Bakery into the Burnaby Business Excellence Awards Hall of Fame. The bakery has been in business for over 60 years as of 2019.
