- History
- James Gilmore Ettinger was born in Noel Road, Nova Scotia in 1863. He worked his way across Canada with the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) and landed in New Westminster in 1888. He was one of the first men who helped log the area for the settlement that is now Burnaby. With two other men, James started a brick manufacturing plant in the area of Deer Lake. In 1889, a second brick plant was started on Brickyard Road in Surrey on the bank of the Fraser River. Martha Harriet Hembrough was born in Leeds, England in 1874 and later moved to Haney. James Gilmore and Martha married in 1890 and had seven children: Evelina "Eve" (b. August 8, 1891, d. January 1, 1976); Ella May (b. ca. 1894, d. February 1983); Leonard; George William "Bill" (b. February 18, 1899, d. November 26, 1970); Stanley (b. December 27, 1901, d. March 10, 1966); Ethel (b. ca. 1904, d. December 22, 1982); and James. On May 19, 1911, the Ettingers bought parcel Lot 8, Block C sub-division 19 and 20 of DL 95 no. 556 for $350.00. Their eldest daughter, Evelina was signed over the Deed of Land for this property on April 21, 1914. In 1919, the Ettinger family was living at 1177 19th Avenue, Edmonds, Burnaby. James worked as a Road Foreman in Edmonds, and later as ward foreman for the Municipality. Ella May married Charles Morton Marshall on July 7, 1926. Evelina married Don Digby (d. October 21, 1965) on April 30, 1930. Ethel married George H. McKennell (d. June 18, 1985) on March 16, 1931. Bill worked as a Pacific Stage Lines (PSL) bus operator who “pulled” the first bus service between Vancouver and New Westminster and between Vancouver and Chilliwack in 1924. He received a number of National Safety Council non-accident awards during his career. He married Jane Wilson on July 11, 1931. James Gilmore died on June 9, 1948 at the age of 85. Martha died on February 9, 1955 at the age of 80.

Peter Byrne stands on a spring board protruding from the stump, and holds on to the end of a second crosscut saw. On the other side of the stump, a man balances on a second spring board while holding on to the opposite end of the horizontal crosscut saw with this right hand. Peter Byrne went on to serve as a member of Council from 1894 to 1895 and from 1898 to 1906, and was Reeve of Burnaby from 1906 to 1910.

- History
- George Alford Grant was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on June 22, 1877. In 1907, George married Alice Taylor of Stonehaven, Scotland. Three of their children were born in Edinburgh: William (b. 1908), George Jr. (b. 1910), and Herriot (b. 1912). By 1912, George Grant had secured a job in Burnaby at a law office and brought his family to join him. He eventually established his own law firm, Grant and MacDougal. While in Burnaby, Alice and George Grant had two more children, Alastair and Millie. During World War I, George served in the 11th Irish Fusiliers of Vancouver and reached the rank of Captain. Upon returning to Burnaby, George had a long and distinguished career, serving for over 43 years in both official and unofficial offices in Burnaby – a record of service for which he received both local recognition and the Order of the British Empire. Between 1921 and 1931, George sat on the Burnaby School Board and also served as the Municipal Solicitor in the 1930s. Alice Grant became a life member of the Provincial Chapter of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (as well as the Col. Hart McHarg Chapter) in 1935 and George was a Burnaby Police Magistrate for 13 years, until 1954. During this time, he was recognized for his patience and fairness and the BC Borstal Association benefited from his active interest for many years. George also served as chairman of the West Burnaby Liberal Association from 1925 to 1938, heading the New Westminster Federal Riding Association in 1938. In January 1955, he was presented with the Gold Key award by the Municipality of Burnaby. Alice Grant died in May of 1954 and George died ten years later on April 30, 1964.

- History
- George Jeffery was a well-respected Burnaby police constable, having served first as a solider. Upon joining the police force in 1912, he was appointed to patrol the Central Park district, a position he held for 22 years. From his experiences confronting young shoplifters, he determined the reason groups of boys were getting into trouble was due to a lack of recreational activities on offer. He established the Burnaby Athletics Association in an old barn behind the Royal Oak Hotel to combat this, turning it into a competitive boxing ring and gym. George and his wife Harriet lived most of their married life in Central Park district with their three daughters: Patricia, a teacher in Burnaby prior to her marriage; Winnifred, Burnaby's 1929 May Queen; and Elsie who excelled at badminton. Patricia married William Poole; Winnifred married Fred Shaughnessy; and Elsie married Art Winteford. In 1935, when the BC Provincial police replaced the Burnaby Police, George quit the force in order to stay in Burnaby and worked at Oakalla Prison farm. He retired in 1945.

- History
- Hazel Eleanora Erickson was born May 21, 1896 in San Francisco California and baptized on December 25, 1899. She was the daughter of Charles Victor Erickson and Amanda Hedvig Erickson of Sweden. Her parents were married in Oakland, California on January 20, 1894. The Erickson family lived in San Francisco, then travelled up the panhandle to Alaska. They travelled throughout British Columbia and by the 1920s made Burnaby their home. Hazel Erickson was living at Gibson's Landing, British Columbia by the time of her marriage on August 31, 1936 to Edwin Peterson. Edwin Peterson was born at sea on October 18, 1884 and became naturalized as a British subject from the Dominion of Canada in 1921. He was an electrician by trade. Hazel resided at the Dania Home in Burnaby for 20 before her death in 1996.
