Object History
William and Flora Bell built this dry goods store on Sixth Street in East Burnaby circa 1918. This street was a small commercial district that served residents located along the streetcar line between New Westminster and Edmonds. This store also served as the location of East Burnaby Post Office, one of many subpost offices located throughout the municipality during its early days. This building remains as one of South Burnaby's few surviving early commercial buildings and features a "false front" and recessed main entrance. The building was later sold to Maurice and Mildred Whitechurch, who ran it for many years as a hardware store named Whitechurch Hardware Store. In 1974 the building was moved to the Burnaby Village Museum.

Photograph of six men standing outside a building. George Leaf, the owner, was well known for his interest in sports, particularly lacrosse. He also owned another general supply store near McKay Ave. in Burnaby and it was known as the 'Keefer Branch.' For an unknown reason, Mr. Leaf earned the nickname of 'Mr. Burnaby'." Pictured in the photograph are (left to right) Andy Johnston, Bill Bailey, Harry Archerbald, Ed Harris, Bob Burgess, and Tom Breen. The description also notes that the dollhouse in the window of the store is made out of Sunlight Soap boxes.

Track 1: This portion of the recording pertains to Janet White’s school years and the activities and sports she participated in, formally and informally. She lived near 6th and Edmonds St., and then in the Cascades area, by Nithsdale St., and attended Schou Elementary. She attended many schools as soon as they were built, attending Gilmore Avenue, then Cascade Heights, Alpha Junior High, Moscrop Secondary, and finally Burnaby Central Secondary. Play was unstructured, with the Cascades bush and the tunnel parallel to and going under Smith Avenue being favourite places to play.
History/Biography
Recording of an interview with Janet White recording by Tom Gooden on May 10 2005. This recording was completed for an exhibit, Growing Up in Burnaby, for the Burnaby Village Museum. Major themes discussed are growing up in Burnaby in the 1950s.
