History
Burnaby Village Museum is an open air museum that represents a typical tram-stop community. Museum interpreters welcome visitors, provide demonstrations and on site programming. The museum’s collection consists of thousands of artifacts, community records as well as several original Burnaby heritage buildings, a 1912 carousel, 1912 B.C. Electric Railway interurban tram, a Chinese Market Garden and Indigenous Learning House and Matriarch's Garden. In 1990, the Corporation of the District of Burnaby assumed the operation and management of Burnaby Village Museum from the Burnaby Village Museum Association. Burnaby Village Museum (formerly named Heritage Village) was originally created by the Burnaby Centennial '71 Committee in 1971 as a commemorative project for British Columbia's Centennial. A concept for an open-air museum was developed near Deer Lake on Districts Lots 79/ 85. The official sod turning for Heritage Village took place on the site on April 11, 1971. In the spring of 1971, a museum director and curator were hired to oversee the development of the project and the acquisition of artifacts with funding from the Parks and Recreation Commission. The Century Park Museum Association (later named Burnaby Village Museum Association) was formed on October 26, 1971 as a governing body for Heritage Village Museum. The museum opened on November 19, 1971 with Mayor Bob Pritte and Canada's Governor General Roland Michener. IN July 1972, the museum opened for it's first public season. The Village was described as depictive of the 1890 to 1920 era of the lower mainland. Since 1990, the site expanded from it’s original four acre size to it's current ten acres. In the 1990s and early 2000s staff and volunteers created exhibits and programs about Burnaby with an emphasis on the 1920s. Since it's 40th anniversary in 2011, the museum has implemented changes to make the museum more interactive and inclusive in telling the story of Burnaby's history.

History
The Girl Guide Movement began in England in 1909 when girls in England demanded to take part in a Boy Scouts rally at the Crystal Palace in London, organized by Chief Scout and Boy Scout founder Lord Robert Baden-Powell. Following this event, Baden Powell asked his sister, Agnes Baden-Powell to help him start a similar organization for girls and Girl Guides was formed. Girl Guides came to Canada in 1910 and the first troop in British Columbia was registered in Victoria in 1912. In 1913 Amy Leigh moved to Burnaby from England and enquired about a Guiding company in her area and was disappointed to find none. On June 11, 1914 at the age of 17 years, Amy registered the 1st Burnaby Girl Guide Company and became the captain. On April 2, 1916 the 2nd Burnaby Guide Company registered and met at Edmonds School. In this same year, the very first Burnaby Girl Guide Rally event took place at Central Park and by 1920 another took place at the Burnaby Municipal Hall (Edmonds) and was attended by both Burnaby and New Westminster Guides. The First Burnaby Brownie Pack was registered on December 1922 with Mrs. W.J. Matherson as Brown Owl. The Brownie Pack met in a West Burnaby facility. The First Burnaby Land Ranger Co. was formed on November 29, 1923 and by 1924 Burnaby became a District with four Guide companies, four Brownie Packs and the Rangers. In 1923 records show Mrs. Gavin as commissioner, Mrs. C.F. Carter in 1924 and Miss Amy Leigh between 1926 and 1928. The first District camp was held near Sechelt in 1927 on the property of Mrs. Deal and Mrs. Nixon with annual camps held here until 1930 when the Guide camp at Wilson Creek was established. In 1929 Guides and Brownies began taking part in the Annual May Day Celebrations at Central Park. In 1930 Burnaby became a Division with Mrs. C.F. Carter as Division Commissioner and Mrs. G. Peel as District Commissioner for South Burnaby and in 1931 Miss Amy Leigh became the first North Burnaby Commissioner. The 5th Burnaby Girl Guide Company in North Burnaby began publishing a bulletin in 1935. In this same year Burnaby Girl Guides attended a rally for Lord and Lady Powell who were visiting Vancouver and Burnaby Girl Guides became affiliated with Greater Vancouver Girl Guide Council. The packs and companies of North Burnaby were attached to the eastern section of Vancouver while South Burnaby and South Vancouver District became another Division. Mrs. Pochin organized the Burnaby Lake District in 1943 becoming the first District commissioner (In 1927 Mrs. Peel had guides in this area). The first training classes for Girl Guides were held in 1943 in a hall on Buller Avenue at the BCER tracks and also Phillips Hall on McKay Avenue. By 1945 a training camp was held on Mrs. Pochin’s property on Deer Lake. South Vancouver, South Burnaby and Burnaby Lake Districts took part in the training which was a change over from war time service and the return of Pioneer camping. Miss E. Perition was in charge of camp which was attended by Mrs. J. Quinnell, Mrs. J. Albertson and many guiders. In 1946 Lady Baden Powel returned for a visit to Vancouver and there was a rally at Connaught Park and Chief Scout Lord Rowallyn held a rally at Brocton Point. In 1947 Mrs. J. Albertson became Division Commissioner for South Vancouver and South Burnaby. Districts of Burnaby Lake and South Burnaby each adopted a European child and undertook to send regular parcels and by 1948 these Districts became a Burnaby Division once more under Division Commissioner Mrs. W.M. Wall. In September 1949 the first Sea Ranger Crew “S.R.S. Royal Oak” was formed under the Skipper, Miss E. Periton. The S.R.S. Royal Oak met at All Saint’s Church Hall on Royal Oak Ave. In 1950 Packs and Companies in North Burnaby organized into a District under Mrs. Hebron and in 1953 Sperling District was organized by District Commissioner Mrs. Hancock. 1953 was also the same year that South Burnaby District was divided into three Districts: Central Park District under Commissioner Miss Perition, Douglas District under Commissioner Mrs. J. McKee Wilson and Kingsway under Commissioner Mrs. J.G. Fowler. A few years later, in 1955 the guides and brownies were out in force to welcome Lady Baden Powel at a rally held in the PNE Gardens building and by March 1956 Burnaby ceased to be a part of Greater Vancouver Area and was organized under two Divisions of the Province. The Sperling, Willingdon and Vancouver Heights Districts in North Burnaby became North Burnaby Division with Mrs. H. Hebron as Division Commissioner. With rapid population growth further decentralization became necessary and South Burnaby Division was split in two, adding the new division of Central Burnaby under Commissioner Miss E. Perition. Central Burnaby was composed of three Districts: Burnaby Lake, Central Park and a new District named “Windsor” under Mrs. C. Dumfries. South Burnaby was composed of three Districts: Kingsway, Edmonds and Lakeview (the latter two also referred to as Douglas with Mrs. McGeachie and Mrs. J. Park as the first commissioners of these two Districts). In 1957 Burnaby became an Area unto itself with three Divisions, and 9 Districts under Miss Periton as the first Area Commissioner. In February 1957, Burnaby entered into a contract with Vancouver Girl Guide Council to lease a part of the Wilson Creek campsite. Under the leadership of Area Commissioner, Miss Periton, work started on the development of the site with funds raised by both the Girl Guides, local citizens and associations. A camp committee was formed with representation from each Division and a lot of help from Miss Norah Weller, the Wilson Creek camp manager. Plans were laid for the site with a dining shelter, store room and cook stove contracted for while a subcommittee of men was appointed to purchase building supplies and organize work parties to build cabins, a staff house, water pipes and sanitary facilities. The site opened in May 1958 with $6000 expended on building and equipping the camp, while an official opening took place on June 8 and by July Girl Guides began camping on the site. The Burnaby Area Committee became a member of the Burnaby Community Council and a participant in Community Chest in 1958 and on May 1, the Burnaby Area office opened. By 1959, with further participation in North Burnaby, Sperling District was split to form Sperling and Hillview Districts and by 1960 Kingsway District of South Burnaby split to form Kingsway and Royal Oak Districts. By December 1960, Burnaby Area had 3 Divisions, 11 Districts with a total membership of 2, 331.

Fonds consists of photographs and textual records from a scrapbook documenting the early years of the Simpsons-Sears store located at 3660 Kingsway (after 1959 - 4750 Kingsway) in Burnaby including the opening day and staff events. Many of the photographs depict, Manager of Simpsons-Sears, Burnaby, T. Boyd Haskell and include photographs regarding activities of the Greater Vancouver Tourist Association in which T. Boyd Haskell was president 1958-1959. Textual records within fonds include a financial ledger (1954-1956) as well as congratulatory telegrams and cards addressed to Simpsons-Sears staff and managers regarding the Simpsons-Sears store opening in May 1954 along with lists of names of Simpsons-Sears and Sears-Roebuck executive members who visited the store. History
In 1952, U.S. Chairman of Sears-Roebuck and Company, General Robert E.Wood, contacted President of Robert Simpson Company, Edgar G. Burton proposing a partnership between the two companies to serve the Canadian retail market. In September 1952, a merger was signed between the two to create Simpsons-Sears Limited. The terms of the agreement were 50-50. The two main objectives were to expand the Simpsons’ mail order business which was sold to the new company and to build new retail stores across Canada that were modelled on the Sears, Roebuck’s design. In early 1953, operations began with the first Simpsons-Sears Spring/Summer catalogue that was delivered to 300,00 homes across Canada. In September 1953, the first Simpsons-Sears retail store opened in Stratford Ontario and in December 1953 the second store opened in Kamloops, B.C. In 1953, with a 7.6 million dollar investment, construction began on the Simpsons-Sears store located at 3660 Kingsway in Burnaby. This was the second Simpsons-Sears store to be built in British Columbia. The store was designed by two Vancouver architectural firms Sharp, Thompson, Berwick and Pratt and Gardiner and Thornton. The new Burnaby Simpsons-Sears was touted as the most modern mall in Canada with the facing of the store consisting of Travertine marble imported from Italy and the main floor included fourty eight miles of brass strips incorporated in the terrazzo floor which was made from marble chips mixed with white Portland concrete. An exterior promenade, built from British Columbia fir and bolted with copper and brass was built around the exterior of the store. The promenade provided an outdoor display area for garden furniture and other large items. The retail store officially opened on May 5, 1954 with Simpsons-Sears executive members, managers and the Reeve of Burnaby in attendance. T. Boyd Haskell, from Spokane, Washington was hired as the Burnaby retail store manager and C.W. Jaggs, former Simpsons' general manager for British Columbia became manager of the Simpsons-Sears mail order business in British Columbia. A ribbon cutting ceremony took place during the opening event with Burnaby Reeve Charles W. MacSorley in attendance along with other dignitaries from Simpsons-Sears including President of Simpsons-Sears, E.G. Burton; Chairman of the board of Simpsons-Sears, Charles W. Burton; Vice President of Simpsons-Sears, G.F. Trotter; Mail Order Manager for Simpsons-Sears, B.C., C.W. Jaggs and Manager of Simpsons-Sears, Burnaby, T. Boyd Haskell. Over 10,000 people attended the opening of the store at 11:00 a.m. and it is believed that throughout the day, over 75,000 people went through the new store. T. Boyd Haskell was manager of the Burnaby Simpsons-Sears store between 1953 and 1962. After graduating from college, Haskell joined the Sears-Roebuck department store chain. In 1953 he moved to Vancouver from Washington State to set up the new store in Burnaby. In 1962, Haskell left Simpsons-Sears in Burnaby and transferred to the Sears store in Los Angeles. During his time in British Columbia, Haskell served as the President of the Greater Vancouver Tourist Association (1958-1959), President of the Community Chest and Councils of Greater Vancouver (1960) and was also a member of the board of directors of the B.C. Lions football team. Haskell died in Arizona in 1969 at the age of 54 years. In 1978, the Hudson’s Bay Company purchased “Simpsons” and converted many of the department stores into The Bay, including the store in downtown Toronto. Sears stores continued to carry the name “Simpsons-Sears” until 1984 when the named changed to “Sears Canada”. The Simpsons-Sears store (later named "Sears") located at 4750 Kingsway (Metropolis at Metrotown) closed it's doors in 2018.

History
Hugh Henry Stewart was born July 18 1887 to Duncan Hugh (1860-1935) and Henrietta Stewart (1860-1944) in South Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. The couple moved to Nanaimo in 1888 with their four children, the oldest of which was Hugh Henry. The family moved to Vancouver in about 1908 and lived at 995 West 7th Avenue while Duncan Stewart worked as a carpenter. Hugh Henry found work as a hardware clerk at the “Forbes and Van Horne” hardware store located at 52 West Hastings, Vancouver. He worked at the store until WWI broke out and his wages were cut. In 1910 Hugh Henry Stewart moved to Burnaby and purchased a house in District Lot 116, in the 3900 block of Albert Street between Ingleton Avenue and McDonald Avenue. This was the only house in this block at the time (3902 Albert Street) but the following year, five more houses were built. In 1911, Hugh married Patience (known as Bertha) Alberta Inglis of Vancouver and between 1911 and 1912, Hugh cleared land around the house. The couple raised three children at their home in Vancouver Heights (now named Burnaby Heights); Duncan Hugh, Daniel Melbourne and Audrey Pearl. In 1914, the Vancouver Heights Ratepayers Association was formed and Hugh Stewart joined. This association lobbied city council to establish land uses which they felt could benefit the citizens of North Burnaby. Following his work at the hardware store, Hugh went to work as a longshoreman at the Hastings Mill in Vancouver and the Barnet Mill in Burnaby. In the 1920s, Stewart started up his own business delivering fuel to households in North Burnaby. His business was named “Stewart’s Cartage and Fuel Supply” which had an office located at 3870 East Hastings Street. Stewart moved his business office to their home in the 1950s which continued to operate at this location until the early 1960s. In 1926, the Burnaby Board of Trade was formed with Hugh Stewart as one of the founding members. The organization changed its name to the North Burnaby Board of Trade in May 1927. Hugh served as president from 1940-1946 and was instrumental in bringing about the amalgamation of the North and South Burnaby Boards of Trade to form the Burnaby Chamber of Commerce. Hugh ran for municipal council in the 1940s and was also a member of other organizations including the Burnaby Lions Club, The International Order of the Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.) and the Ancient Mystic Order of Samaritans. Patience Alberta Stewart died in 1967 and Hugh continued to live in their home on Albert Street until 1978. In 1979 he moved to an apartment on McGill Street in Burnaby. Hugh H. Stewart died in 1981.

History
Doreen "Pixie" Johnson was born in 1922 and married John Aloysius "Jack" McGeachie in April 1942. Jack and Pixie McGeachie lived on Rosewood Street (formerly named Campbell Street pre 1951) in Burnaby from 1948 where they raised their two children; David and Kathi. Pixie was well known for her volunteer work in Burnaby. Pixie served for over 20 years as the volunteer archivist for the Burnaby Historical Society; served as president of the Century Park Museum Association and the Friends of the Interurban 1223 and a six year term on Burnaby's Heritage Commission. Pixie was also a Burnaby historian and author who published a column in the Burnaby Examiner Newspaper entitled "Burnaby History" as well as three books about Burnaby History entitled "Bygones of Burnaby"; "Burnaby - A Proud Century" and "Land of Promise: Robert Burnaby's letters from Colonial B.C." Due to her diligent volunteer work in Burnaby, Pixie was the recipient of many awards between 2002 and 2008. Awards included: 2002 - the Kushiro cup for Citizen of the Year; 2006 - Heritage BC project award for her work with Friends of the Interurban 1223 and in 2008 - Heritage BC - Ruby Nobb Award. Jack McGeachie passed away in 1981, at the age of 67 years and Pixie McGeachie passed away in August 2010 at the age of 88 years. On September 24, 2010, Pixie was honoured by the City of Burnaby when they dedicated the reading room of the City of Burnaby Archives by naming it the "Pixie McGeachie Reading Room".

History
Elmer Wilson Martin (1909-1973) was a professional engineer who lived most of his life in Burnaby. He was born in Treesbank Manitoba to William Henry Martin and Bethia “Bertie” Snell. Elmer married Ellen "Reta" Renetta Boyd (1908-1984) in approx. 1930. The couple moved to Burnaby in 1931 and Elmer graduated from UBC. Following his graduation from UBC, he spent two years at the University of Saskatchewan doing research. From 1936-1937 he worked at the Port Alice mill of the B.C. Pulp and paper Co and later worked for the Boeing aircraft plant at Vancouver. He joined the RCAF in September 1939, serving as chief engineering officer at various Canadian and overseas stations during WWII, until being discharged as a pilot and wing commander in November 1945. He served as NHA assistant regional engineer for a year after his discharge before becoming the owner and operator of Martin Auto Villa at 6574 East Hastings Street in North Burnaby. He was a director of the Burnaby Board of Trade from 1951 and chairman of the Burnaby Industrial Development Board and a member of the Professional Engineers' Association. He ran for Reeve under the Non-Partisan Association in Burnaby's municipal election in 1959 and donated land on Burnaby Mountain for Simon Fraser University. He had many businesses throughout his life including Paneloc Marketing Ltd. and his last one was as Director with the construction company Webb & Knapp Canada Ltd. The couple lived at various locations in Burnaby including, 6574 East Hastings Street eventually settling at 7231 Sutliff Street in North Burnaby in 1957. Elmer's brother, Wilbert Maurice Martin (1907-1980) was also born in Treesbank, Manitoba. Wilbert "Bert" was married to Eva (nee Erhart) Martin (1911-1993). Wilbert and Eva Martin lived on Winch Street in Burnaby. They first lived at 6776 Winch Street before relocating their house to 6656 Winch Street, Burnaby. Wilbert worked in construction as a building contractor and Eva worked as a hostess in the hotel industry. Paneloc buildings were developed by Elmer W. Martin, president of Paneloc Manufacturing Ltd. beginning in 1957 and were based on a design by A.B. Wenaus and Sons Ltd. In 1964, Martin held patents for his design of paneloc buildings in thirty six countries. Since Martin trained as a mechanical engineer, he developed a plan for his home model over a six year period in series of experiments with materials, styles, methods and sizes. Paneloc homes were prefabricated, using specially built bevelled wall panels cut-pie segments to form both the roof and the floor. The wall panels were designed to squeeze together by two metal straps on a turn-buckle basis. The roof and floor were held in place with factory-installed tap block bolts and a long wooden spine which fit in a keyway between the sections. The prefabricated parts were insulated and built with door and window allowances at Harrigan Industries Ltd. in Vancouver where Martin was part owner. Epoxy resin allowed the panels to be assembled without nails using weather-proofed five ply plywood. Sizes of homes varied using four by eight foot wall panels and increasing the span of the floor and roof sections. Harrigan Industries Ltd. continued to sell the prefabricated paneloc buildings until it went into receivership in late 1974.

History
Mabel Edith Honor McClean Hawkshaw (1886-1946) was born in Wexford, Ireland to parents, Washington Gilliland McClean and Honor Delamore McClean (nee Thomas). Mabel's parents had four children; Charles Gilliland McClean; Elsie (Rae); Evangeline Mai (Goff) and Mabel Honor (Hawkshaw). Mabel emigrated from Ireland to Canada with her family in 1903 and the family moved to Vancouver in 1905. In 1909, Mabel married John Edward “Jack” Hawkshaw. Mabel and Jack Hawkshaw had three children; Richard “Crichton” Gilliand Hawkshaw (1912-1972); Edward Delamere “Dal” Burrington Hawkshaw (1914-1988) and Merton Cedric “Cedric” Perry Hawkshaw (1924-2008). Prior to her marriage in 1909, Mabel Hawkshaw worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway in Revelstoke. Mabel was founder and publisher of the “Burnaby Post” newspaper (1922-1937) and wrote articles for city dailies and magazines under the pen name “Percy Egerton Sterling”. Mabel also worked as the first female bank teller in Canada and was the first female censor of motion pictures in British Columbia (1928-1946) and also worked as an assistant advertising manager of the Hudson’s Bay Company. Among other accomplishments, Mabel was the chairperson of the committee for Burnaby's first May Day event in 1925, was active as a leader in the Girl Guides, a member of several women's clubs, a speaker on matters of education and film production in Vancouver and Victoria and was also a member of the Juvenile Court in Burnaby and the I.O.D.E. At time of her death in 1946, Mabel was living on West 57th Street, Vancouver. John Edward “Jack” Hawkshaw (1881-1934) who was born in Glanworth Ontario to Captain William Stearne Hawkshaw and Elizabeth Merton Hawkshaw (nee Shore). Jack came to Vancouver in 1900 and soon after arriving, Jack moved to the Yukon where he worked for the Canadian Bank of Commerce serving in Dawson and White Horse. He returned to Vancouver in 1904 and joined the newly-organized Northern Bank. In 1906, Jack became a bank manager in New Westminster and later was manager in New Westminster for the Northern Crown Bank. Jack resigned from the bank in 1914 to fight in World War I and moved his family to Calgary where he began his military training. In 1915, Jack was stricken with polio which left him crippled in one leg barring him from active service. In the 1920’s, he worked as a treasurer for the Royal City Canning Co. and Cunningham Trapp Hardware Company. In 1933, Jack worked as an accountant treasurer for the Crane Shipyards. Jack Hawkshaw was a member of the Canadian Credit Men’s Association of Burnaby and the Kiwanis Club of New Westminster. In May 1934, Mabel and Jack purchased property on Lasqueti Island with a sheep ranch. One month after purchasing the property Jack Hawkshaw died tragically in an accident on the island when he was thrown from a horse drawn carriage with his ten year old son Cedric. Cedric survived the accident but his father died on the dock on Lasqueti Island. The family dog, Dixie also died after she swam after the fishing boat carrying Jack Hawkshaw’s body and Cedric to the mainland for medical attention. John and Mabel’s first home was located at 309 Pine Street in New Westminster. In 1920, the family relocated to 763 Wedgewood, Burnaby (later renumbered 7743 Wedgewood Street) where they lived until 1931. In 1932, the Hawkshaw family moved to Vancouver where they resided in different locations until after the death of Jack Hawkshaw. Mabel continued to operate the sheep ranch on Lasquesti after Jack died in 1934, with a succession of tenants until Mabel’s death in 1946. In 1936, Mabel moved back to Burnaby for a few years, residing at 5590 Douglas Road in 1936 and 3908 Deer Lake Avenue in 1937 (Heritage home known as the R.F. Anderson House). In 1938 Mabel moved back to Vancouver where she lived until her death in 1946. Richard “Crichton” Gilliland Hawkshaw (1912-1972) married Ivy Ina Hawkshaw (nee Hughes) (1913-1987) at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Vancouver in 1939. Crichton enlisted with the Canadian military and trained at Shilo and Sarcee military bases. Following his military training, Crichton got work as an operator in the mill at Britannia Beach mine where he worked between 1938 and 1949. Crichton and Ivy Hawkshaw lived at Britannia Beach during the time he worked there. Ivy and Crichton had two sons, Bruce and Dick Hawkshaw. After Britannia Beach, the family lived in Abbotsford and Chilliwack before moving to North Vancouver. Prior to his death in 1972, Crichton Hawkshaw worked as an auditor for the Government of British Columbia in the Internal Revenue Department. Crichton was a member of Abbotsford Masonic Lodge No. 70, past patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, member of the North Shore Shrine Club and Upper Fraser Valley Shrine Club and Gizeh Shrine Temple. He was also a devoted fan and supporter of the B.C. Lions football team. Edward Delamere “Dal” Burrington Hawkshaw (1914-1988) married Barbara Walters Fry (1913-2001) in 1940. The couple had three children; Nancy Susan, Peter Burrington and John Edward (who died in infancy). Dal Hawkshaw worked as a financial consultant with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. In his free time, Dal served on the board of the Goodwill Enterprises for the Handicapped, the Victoria Symphony Society and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Dal was the first honorary treasurer of the University of Victoria and served on the advisory council and as a trustee of the British Columbia Institute of Technology. In 1985, Dal Hawkshaw was named an honorary citizen of British Columbia. Merton "Cedric" Perry Hawkshaw (1924-2008) married Carol Violet (Worrall) Hawkshaw (1923-1985) in 1947 (Carol remarried later to Jack Madsen). The couple had three children, Frances Jacqueline (b. 1948) and Geraldine Lucy (b.1952), and Barry (b.1957). ). Cedric was a member of the Old Boys Association of St. Georges School, served in the Navy (DEMS) and was a proud veteran of WWII. When the war ended he saved enough money to purchase a home in Burnaby on acreage which he sold soon after and relocated to Armstrong Street, Burnaby. Cedric worked for his father in law at William Worrall furniture. After the company closed in 1959, he worked in the furniture department at T. Eaton Co., West Vancouver. Cedric retired at a young age to run and live on the Hawkshaw Ranch on Lasqueti Island where he spent many years before returning to the mainland due to health issues. He lived at George Derby Veterans Centre for 17 years. While living at George Derby, Cedric was involved in Arts and Crafts, creating works in ceramic and textiles.

History
Edwin Wettenhall "E.W." Bateman was born in 1859 in Sandbach, Cheshire, to James and Caroline Mary Wettenhall Bateman (their home in Sandbach was called Elworth Cottage). When he was twenty-one, E.W. Bateman immigrated to Manitoba, Canada where he met Catherine “Cassie” Dale, daughter of George and Sarah Gillon Dale. They were married in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba on November 9, 1886. Edwin and Cassie had seven children, the eldest Edna Caroline Annie (Corner) (1889-1969); George Edwin (1890-? ); Mamie (McWilliams) (1892-1979); Marianne “May” Bateman (1894-1990); Warren Stafford (1896-1954); Jessie (Fox Kemp) (1899-1978) and John Carey (1901-1945). Catherine “Cassie” (Dale) Bateman died in Portage La Prairie in 1909. After Cassie's death, Edwin was transferred to Vancouver by the Canadian Pacific Railway where he married Cassie’s younger sister Mary Dale (1896-1935). Edwin moved his six of his seven children to Vancouver (not including George). Edwin and Mary (Dale) Bateman first lived at 7th and Balsam Street in Vancouver and in 1920, they decided to move to the quieter atmosphere of the Burnaby Lake- Deer Lake area. By this time Edwin Wettenhall Bateman was a retired CPR executive. He moved his wife and daughter Marianne “May” Bateman to Deer Lake and commissioned architect, Enoch Evans to build 'Elworth' house (named after Edwin’s family home in Sandbach, Chesire). The house was completed by contractor William Dodson in 1922 and located at the site of what would become Heritage Village and later, Burnaby Village Museum, 6501 Deer Lake Avenue. The Batemans lived at this location for thirteen years before moving back to Vancouver in May of 1935. Mary Dale Bateman died in July 1935 and sometime after, Edwin W. Bateman married Dora Coulton. Edwin W. Bateman died in 1957 at the age of 98. Edna Caroline Bateman married Raymond Westley Corner in 1920 and had a daughter named Catherine Mary (Levins). Edna and Raymond lived in Kelowna. George Bateman married Louise Agness Birss in January 1910 and continued to live in Manitoba. Mamie Dale Bateman married George Lloyd McWilliams in 1915. The couple had two children, Warren Finley McWilliams and Bruce McWilliams. Mamie and George McWilliams lived with their family on Douglas Road across the road from Elworth house in Burnaby. Warren McWilliams was on North Atlantic convoy duty during World War I from 1942 to 1944. Warren McWilliams died in 2004. Warren Stafford Bateman married Norah Withington in Burnaby in 1924; Winifred Dare Webster in Burnaby in 1932 and Dorothy Margaret Buchanan in New Westminster in 1949. Warren and Winnifred “Winnie” Webster celebrated their marriage at Elworth house in 1932. Warren served in World War I. Jessie Madeline Bateman married Ernest Denby Fox (1900-1945) in 1921. Jessie and Ernest Fox had three children, Colin Rhodes Fox (1921-2005); Mary “Betty” (Gludo) and Allan Fox. Jessie and Ernest Fox operated a small logging company near Powell River, B.C. Sometime after the death of her first husband, Ernest Denby Fox, Jessie married James Kemp. The youngest child of Edwin and Cassie, John “Carey” Bateman married Sophia Spak (1899-1977) in 1925. On September 10, 1939, the day that Canada declared war on Germany, Colin Rhodes Fox (eldest son of Jessie and Ernest Fox) enlisted in the army at the age of 18 years. Colin initially served in an anti-aircraft unit, but was soon transferred to the Field Artillery. During his service overseas, Colin wrote letters to family members including his aunt May Bateman who was living in Burnaby. Colin went through basic artillery training in Edmonton before heading overseas to the United Kingdom with his unit, the 13th Field Regiment , 44th Canadian Field Battery of the Royal Canadian Artillery and later the 78th Canadian Field Battery in Germany and Holland . Colin was wounded on June 8, 1944 (two days after D-Day) but returned to serve in Holland and Germany until the war ended. Colin suffered bullet and shrapnel wounds while laying communication cable from the Normandy beachhead. In 1946, Colin married Susan Streika (Striha) of Pitt Meadows and he began a thirty five year career in the B.C. Telephone Company on Vancouver Island. Colin and Susan had three children; Gary, Elaine and Irene. Colin Rhodes Fox died in 2005. The E.W. Bateman house, "Elworth" is a heritage building on the site of the Burnaby Village Museum. The site is an important cultural feature for the interpretation of Burnaby’s heritage to the public. The E.W. Bateman House was purchased by Burnaby in 1970 and became the focal point for the development of the Museum. Both the interior and exterior of the house have been restored and interpreted to the date of original construction, including recreated room interiors and period furnishings.

History
Hipman "Jimmy" Chow was born in Lin Pong Lee, Hoiping, China in 1948. In 1950, Jimmy Chow and his mother, Gim Gee Chow (1913-1991) fled China to escape the Communist Revolution and to be reunited with his father, Robin Chung Dip Chow (1906-1990) who’d immigrated to Canada many years earlier. Jimmy’s elder sister Shao-Lin Chow stayed behind in China. Jimmy’s father, Robin Chung Dip Chow immigrated to Canada in 1921 at 14 years of age and was forced to pay the Chinese head tax of $500. In 1950, Jimmy and his mother first fled to Hong Kong before immigrating to Canada and arriving in Vancouver. Jimmy Chow’s birth name is Hipman Chow but when he arrived in Canada, his father indicated that he needed an English name and he was given the name “Jimmy” but retained his birth name “Hipman Chow”. Over the years, Jimmy has also used the name “James H. Chow” and is often credited by this name in the film industry. For the first four years after immigrating, Jimmy and his parents lived in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec where his father had work in hotels and restaurants. While living in Asquith, Saskatchewan Jimmy attended school and began to learn English. In 1954, Jimmy and his parents returned to Vancouver, first living in the area of Strathcona before settling in the neighbourhood of Mount Pleasant where they purchased a house located on 15th Avenue east of Main Street. While living in Mount Pleasant, Jimmy attended both elementary and high school. While attending high school, Jimmy began working at the local grocery store where he worked for many years living at home and saving his money. In 1970 while attending Vancouver City College, Jimmy met his future wife Donna Polos. Two years later, they moved in together, married in 1981 and started a family. Jimmy and Donna first lived in North Burnaby before purchasing a house on Victory Street in Burnaby where they raised their three children. Growing up in a traditional Chinese Canadian family, Jimmy was always one who went against the grain. Although his father wanted him to get a business degree, Jimmy had aspirations for a different career path. Through the referral of a friend, he entered the film industry in 1973 working for CBC Vancouver. While working at the CBC, Jimmy gained valuable experience working on the set of the television series The Beachcombers, which launched his career in the film industry. Over a 45 year career, Jimmy worked on over 50 blockbuster movies, historical period films, science fiction films and fantasy films, where he honed in on his expertise as a set decorator, art director and property master. He built an international reputation through working with production companies, prop makers and antique sellers across the globe. As a property master in the film industry, Jimmy Chow has been responsible for designing, managing, and sourcing props for films such as: The BFG, Warcraft: The Beginning, X-Men 2, Fantastic Four, Watchman, Tron: Legacy, Little Women, Seven Years in Tibet, Shanghai Noon, The Shipping News, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, The Changeling, Man of Steel (Superman), Snow Falling on Cedars, Legends of the Fall, And the Sea Will Tell, Once a Thief and many more. With Jimmy's many years of professional experience in the film industry, he has been a union member of IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians...) from July 1979, a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science from 2018 and has worked as a guest lecturer in film production at Capilano University and Langara University. He was also a key contributor to the Burnaby Village Museum’s 2014 temporary exhibition Burnaby Makes Movies. Donna Polos was born in Vancouver in 1949 to parents Mayme "May" Helen Tillikana Polos (1931-1977) and Donald James Polos (1926-2017). Donna’s maternal grandparents, Elvi Tienhara and Toiva Tillikana immigrated to Canada from Helsinki, Finland. Donna’s paternal grandmother, Pauline Chimiki Polos emigrated from Ukraine to Argentina and then to Winnipeg. Donna’s paternal grandfather, James "Jimmy" Kostopolus emigrated as an orphan from Sparta Greece at the age of 12 years. In 1908, he first immigrated to the United States where he was denied entry so immigrated to Canada, entering through Halifax at Pier 17. When immigrating, James changed his last name to "Polos". Jimmy Polos arrived in Halifax with only five dollars in his pocket. He lived in Halifax for many years before making his way to Vancouver where he established three restaurants and raised his family. James was the proprietor of three restaurants in Burnaby including; the Home Apple Pie Café (1941-1944) located on East Hastings near Princess Avenue; Jimmy’s Café (1945-1955) located on East Hastings near Hawks Avenue and another restaurant located near 10th Avenue and Alma Street. Donna grew up with her family in Vancouver, first living in the downtown eastside before moving to a home near Joyce Station. Donna attended elementary school and high school while growing up in the neighbourhood of Joyce Station. Donna moved out of her family home at 21 years of age and lived with roommates before moving in with Jimmy Chow in 1972. Donna attended Vancouver City College and the University of British Columbia where she obtained her teaching degree in 1974. Donna first taught at Gilmore Elementary School before being hired to teach at Clinton Elementary School where she taught for nine years. While raising their three children, Donna worked part time teaching in schools in Burnaby. In 1991, after a near death experience, Donna became interested in fine art and took drawing and watercolour painting classes. This experience led her to experimenting with different painting techniques on paper and fabric. In 2008, Donna retired from teaching but continued her art career often working as an Artist in Residence at various schools and exhibiting her work. While living in Burnaby Donna has been politically active with a particular passion for heritage, housing and preserving the natural environment. Donna was instrumental in advocating and petitioning for the establishment of a tree bylaw in Burnaby which was eventually adopted by the City.

History
Robert Stanley Vannerus "Bob" was born in 1927 and died in 2004. On October 27, 1950, he married Yvonne Sigalet. Yvonne and Bob had three children; Bruce, Gary and Carol. Bob was a member of the Burnaby Auxiliary Police and in 1966, after returning to school, he was appointed a Special Constable with the Burnaby RCMP. Bob took a position with the Highways Patrol and later transferred to the Sheriff's Department where he retired as a Deputy Sheriff in 1988. He was very active in junior sports including Little League Baseball and the BC Minor Baseball Association. Being a member of the RCMP allowed Bob to be eligble to play for the RCMP soccer, baseball and bowling teams. His love of sports also allowed him to coach juvenile Hockey, soccer and baseball when his children got involved. Bob was also an active member of the South Burnaby Men's Club and the Burnaby Masonic Lodge #150.

History
Walter "Wally" William Westerman was born in London, Ontario in 1916. A few years later he moved with his parents to Vancouver. Around 1921 his parents, Albert Edwin and Louisa (nee Williams) Westerman bought a double lot at 4797 Georgia Street in District Lot 122 in Burnaby. On the lot they built a house and bowling green. Wally's father Albert worked as a proof reader for the Daily Province newspaper and retired in 1938. Walter attended Gilmore Avenue school and North Burnaby High School. After graduating from highschool he enrolled in engineering school in Glendale, California. Wally was married to Margot Florence Patry from 1943 to 1952. When World War II began, Wally joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. Wally suffered from arthritis and after being declared unfit for combat he was discharged. He returned to Burnaby and became a foreman in the engineering department of Boeing Aircraft of Canada. In 1944, while employed by Boeing, Wally was recoginized with awards for his ingenuity of "Jig Design for Bomb Torpedo Adaptors" and "Bomb Release Scissors". When Wally's father Albert became ill and had to have his leg amputated, Wally attended to his needs and sold the family's Georgia Street house to a buy a house at 5277 Spencer Street in Vancouver. Wally's father died in 1944 and his mother died in 1966. Following his first marriage, Wally met Gwendolyn "Gwen" Brocklesby and they developed a long term relationship eventually marrying in 1969. Gwen had a daughter named Barbara from her first marriage and Wally became her step father. Between 1960 and 1963, Wally was admitted to membership in the Canadian Power Squadrons with qualifications in seamanship, engine maintenance and weather and Gwen was awarded a certificate of qualification in piloting and seamanship. In 1969 Gwen, Wally and Barbara moved to a brand new home at 2171 Duthie Avenue in Burnaby which was within walking distance to Lenkurt Electric on Lougheed Highway where Wally worked. Wally was a machinist and foreman of the sheet metal shop at Lenkurt and later at Microtel. Walter Westerman died in Burnaby in 2000 and his wife Gwen died in Burnaby in 2016.

History
Douglas Stewart (1886-1976) was born in Kirkintilloch, Scotland and began working as a butcher at age twelve years. In 1905, at age nineteen years, Douglas immigrated to Canada, first settling in Calgary, Alberta. While in Alberta, John was employed with Burns Meat abattoir, feeding cattle on cattle cars which helped pay his way to Vancouver. Douglas married Jessie Reekie (1888-1975) who was also born in Scotland and the couple had three children, Annie Stewart Shore, Douglas William and Robert Malcolm who were all born in Vancouver. After arriving in Vancouver around 1913, Douglas worked at various meat markets as a butcher. In January 1925, Douglas opened a meat market which he named Thistle Meat Market (also known as Thistle Meats) located near the corner of Kingsway and Cassie Street in Burnaby. The family continued to live in South Vancouver until 1926 when they moved to Burnaby, first residing at 4022 Kingsway with the shop located at 4020 Kingsway. Over the years, Douglas owned buildings with addresses located between 4018 and 4032 Kingsway in Burnaby renting them out as businesses with some residences above. Between 1927 and 1935, Thistle Meats relocated to 4018 Kingsway and between 1927 and 1935 the family relocated their residence to 4020 Kingsway, above a business that was located next door to the shop. Between 1936 and 1953 Thistle Meats relocated to 4028 Kingsway and between 1936 and 1951, Douglas and Jessie relocated their residence to 4030 Kingsway. In 1951, Douglas retired, sold the buildings that he owned along Kingsway and moved to Grafton Street, Burnaby with his wife Jessie. Thistle meats continued to operate at 4028 Kingsway until 1958 and from 1959-1960, it operated at 4534 Kingsway. After Douglas Stewart retired in 1951, H.W. Silzer managed Thistle Meat Market until 1960. Douglas Stewart was a Mason with St. James Lodge No 80 and lifetime member of Kilwinning Lodge No. 29, Kirkintilloch, Scotland. Douglas Stewart died in Burnaby at the age of 91 years and his wife, Jessie died at the age of 87 years.

History
Earl Gene Philips (1915-1968) was born, Eugene William Phillips in Kamloops, British Columbia and Adell Philips (1915-2022) was born, Lilian Odell Greenwood in Jaffray, British Columbia. The couple met at Mac & Mac Hardware in New Westminster where Earl was working as a salesman and Adell was working as a secretary and bookkeeper. Earl and Adell were married on May 15, 1942 in New Westminster. The couple lived briefly in Mission while Earl was working for the Mackie Brothers and returned to New Westminster where they lived on Queens Avenue while Earl worked for the Nelson Brothers Fisheries. In 1943, their first child, Cory (Linda Anne Phillips) was born followed by; Lorayne (Donna Elaine Phillips) in 1944 and Judith (Diane Elizabeth Phillips) in 1949. In 1949, the family moved to 5877 Barker Avenue, Burnaby and Adell worked for MacDonald Realty as a legal secretary. In 1952, Earl became involved in numerology and changed his name from Eugene William Phillips to Earl Gene Philips (with one “l”). The names of his wife and children were also changed from; Lilian Odell Phillips to Adell Philips, Linda Anne Phillips to Cory Philips, Donna Elaine Phillips to Lorayne Philips and Diane Elizabeth Phillips to Judith Philips. In 1955, their fourth child Lea Philips was born. All four children attended schools in Burnaby including; Nelson Elementary, Kingsway West School, Suncrest Elementary School, Maywood Elementary School, Burnaby South High School, Moscrop Junior High School, Burnaby Central Secondary School and BCIT. In 1969, following the death of Earl (in 1968), Adell and her son, Lea moved from their home on Barker Avenue to a house located at 4085 Spruce Street. Lea lived with his mother Adell until 1978 when he was married. Adell continued to live on Spruce Street until 2021 when she moved to a care home at the age of 106. Adell died in 2022, just 3 weeks shy of her 107th birthday.

History
Esther Love Stanley was born in Burnaby in 1896 to parents Jesse Love (1847-1928) and Martha Leonard (1858-1920). Esther's father, Jesse Love was born in Swindon, England and left England to work on a dairy farm in the Toronto area. While working on the farm in Toronto, Jesse met Martha Leonard and they married in 1879. While living in Toronto, Jesse and Martha had two children, George (1880-1974) and Annie Elizabeth (1881-1957). About one year after Annie was born, the Love family moved to North Dakota to grow wheat. While living there, they had two more children, Henry (1883-1956) and Edith Minnie (1885-1976). The family decided to move further west after hearing about the fairer weather conditions from Martha’s father, George Leonard, who had settled in Vancouver in 1885. On May 23, 1887, Jesse, Martha and their four children arrived in Vancouver after travelling across Canada from Winnipeg on the first transcontinental train. Soon after their fifth child, Thomas Robert (1887-1918) was born, the family moved to Lulu Island in Richmond where they lived growing vegetables and selling them to Vancouver hotels. While living and farming on Lulu island, the couple had two more children Martha (Dot or Dorothy) (1889-1972) and Sarah Marie (1892-1978). In October 1893, Jesse Love purchased land in District Lot 25, Burnaby and built a house between 1893 and 1894. A road was constructed and named Cumberland in 1905 and the address for the Love home was 1390 Cumberland Road (after 1960- 7651 Cumberland). While living in the house, Jesse and Martha had four more children, Phoebe Leonard (1894-1991), Esther (1896-1991), John Leonard (1899-1978) and Hannah Victoria (also known as Girlie) (1902-1976). Frank Charles “Stan” Stanley was born in London, England in 1891. Frank “Stan” Stanley is the youngest son of John Stanley and Mary (Conquest) Stanley. John and Mary had eleven children: Conquest John “Con”, George, Alice, Mary, Nelly, Mabel Annie, Percy William, Henry James, Ada Elizabeth, Arthur Ewart and Frank Charles. In 1912, Frank Charles Stanley immigrated to Canada. Frank Stanley served in the 29th Battalion (nicknamed Tobin's Tigers) during the First World War. He received a Military Medal for bravery while serving as lieutenant. Esther Love and Frank “Stan” Stanley maintained a relationship through letter writing during the First World War and in 1921 after he returned, they were married at St. Alban’s Church in Burnaby. Frank and Esther Stanley (nee Love) had four children, Mary Frances (Pearson) (d. 1986), Ina Esther (Shankie) (1924-2017), Frank Conquest and Joyce (Warner). Frank Charles “Stan” Stanley ran a service station on St. John's Street in Port Moody for many years and also served as mayor of Port Moody in the 1940s. Frank Charles Stanley died in 1975 and Esther Love Stanley died in 1991. In 1947, Ina Esther Stanley married Thomas Ramsay “Ram” Shankie (1920-1996). Ina and Thomas Ramsay Shankie had four children; David Shankie (b. 1951), Linda Shankie (Hanlon), Susan Shankie (Weston) and Kathryn Shankie. The family lived at 5351 Kalyk Avenue in Burnaby (later 3676 Kalyk Avenue). Thomas Ramsay Shankie is the son of Thomas Shankie (1872-1959) and Bertha Janet Shankie (nee Gray) (1891-1965). Thomas Shankie (Sr.) immigrated to Canada from Scotland in 1905. In 1919 Thomas Shankie married Bertha Janet Gray at Henderson Presbyterian Church in West Burnaby. Thomas was the church organist and choir master of the church. Once married, the couple moved to a house located at 3718 Barker Avenue (later became 5515 Barker Avenue). Thomas and Bertha Shankie had two children, Thomas Ramsay Shankie (1920-1996) and Janet Isabella Shankie (Bower) (1923-2014). Around the age of 46 years, Thomas Shankie joined a gym and bought a bicycle to improve his health. By 1955 at the age of 83 years, Thomas Shankie had logged over two hundred thousand miles since buying his first bicycle. His motto was "ride a bicycle if you want to stay young and live long". Thomas also competed in many cycling races. Janet Isabella Shankie Bower (1923-2014) married Charles Franklin "Frank" Bower (1914-2004) in 1947. Janet and Frank Bower had two children; Gordon Franklin Bower (1951-2003) and Janet (Flintroy).

History
Fred Kirk Leggett was the first owner of the C.W. Parker no. 119 carousel. Fred and Norvie Leggett had six children including, Norvie, Fred D., Leon, Dedie and Ralph. The eldest daughter (name unknown) of F.K. and Norvie Leggett died in 1911. In 1913 the carousel was sold to Fred K. Leggett of Houston Texas for $5,886.00 and was originally equipped with a steam engine and ""wishbones/grass-hopper/jumping horse"" mechanisms. It toured Texas for two years with the Lone Star Circus until 1915 when the machine was shipped back to the factory. It is believed that the machine was rebuilt by the factory with fancier horses and heavier rounding boards referred to as the “Superior” style. Some of the horses were built around 1917 and some between 1920 and 1922. The factory records consulted do not tell for certain where the machine went between 1915 and 1936, possibly to San Jose, California from 1918 until 1922 and then to San Francisco California, or Tacoma, Washington. The carousel was installed at Happyland in the nineteen thirties and then moved to Playland and the PNE. In 1989 "The Lower Mainland Association of Friends of the Vancouver Carousel" came together save the carousel from destruction. With a lot of hard work, the help of the Government of British Columbia and the support of the Municipality of Burnaby, the carousel was purchased. Funds were also raised by The Friends of the Carousel to pay for the restoration, and Burnaby agreed to build a new pavilion for it as a Centennial project. The Centennial Parker Carousel (C.W. Parker no. 119 carousel) and the Don Wrigley Pavilion where the carousel is housed, opened at Burnaby Village Museum on March 25, 1993. The eldest daughter of F.K. Leggett, Norvie Leggett Frame and other members of the Leggett family were in attendance for the opening of the newly restored carousel at Burnaby Village Museum in 1993.

History
The Valley View Community Council formed as a society on February 10, 1948. The society was made up of two appointed delegates from the Central Burnaby Ratepayers & Citizen’s Association; the Burnaby Lake Men’s Community Service Club and the Women’s Community Club with the intention to build a community centre in central Burnaby. Founding members included: Orpha Laurie Nicol; Vernon Andrew Fines; Henry Hill; Herbert Frederick Salisbury; Alice Euphemia Peel and Blythe Alfred Eagles. The objects of the society: a) To coordinate the activities of public spirited organizations in the erection, equipping, maintenance, operation and administration of a community centre to be erected on Grandview Highway at Ledger Street. b)To provide opportunities in such centre and elsewhere in the community for wholesome recreation, education, and civic and other leisure-time activities of the community. c)To encourage cooperation in considered community undertakings. A site for the community centre was leased to the Valley View Community Council by the Corporation of the District of Burnaby on a portion of Lot 9 in District Lot 79 on Douglas Road and Ledger Street (offices located at 4443 East Grandview-Douglas Hwy; Community Centre located at 4050 Grandview-Douglas Hwy). The community centre served as a meeting place for various community groups and community events, including the Valley View Kindergarten which used it as a home between 1948 and 1967. On January 29, 1968, the Valley View Community Council was dissolved after their lease on the land expired with the Corporation of the District of Burnaby in the 1967. In the fall of 1968, the community centre building was taken over by the Fraternal Order of the Eagles who relocated the building to 1791 Douglas Road. The remaining funds of the Valley View Community Council society were donated to the Burnaby General Hospital for an incubator in the intensive care unit.

History
Cornelius "Cor" Hiemstra was born on Feb 3, 1929 in Haulerwijk, Friesland, in the Netherlands and was the eldest of five children. Lucy was born on February 6, 1927 in Buitenpost, Friesland, in the Netherlands and was the fourth of ten children. Cor came to Canada in 1953, from the Netherlands. He worked at the Valley Bakery on Hastings in Burnaby from 1958 to 1959. Lucy came to Canada in 1956. The couple met at a wedding in 1956, and were married in 1958 in Kitchener Ontario. Lucy and Cornelius "Cor" Hiemstra purchased a home in Burnaby in October 1959 on 5363 Canada Way and raised their six children there. Eldest to youngest: Sjouke (son), Jacqueline (daughter), Patricia (daughter), Edward (son), Barbara (daughter) and Robert (son). In 1959, Cor purchased Gibbons Bakery on Kingsway and moved his business to the Middlegate Shoppping Centre in 1960 which he named "Middlegate Bakery". Cor ran the bakery until 1974 when it was sold to Kim and Jennifer Wong. The Wongs ran the bakery for 37 years. In 2012, the bakery was purchased by Chef Reza Amiri and renamed Aroma Bakery. Chef Amiri immigrated to Burnaby from Iran in 2005. After Cor sold the bakery, he became a school bus driver and a hospital bus driver for Burnaby Hospital. The Hiemstra family home was renovated and enlarged to accommodate the growing family in 1974. Lucy Hiemstra completed her nursing upgrade in 1974 and worked at the Carleton Hospital and the Burnaby Hospital until she retired in 1994. Cor passed away at the age of 93 in Feburary 2022, and Lucy passed away at the age of 89 in 2018.

Scope and Content
Fonds consists of compilation of six films (including film clips) created by Andy Digney and his son Ernest "Dig" Digney. Film content includes footage of members of the Digney family and friends in Burnaby; the Digney homes on Bonsor Avenue and Kaymar Drive; construction of the Digney Bowling Alley and the Simpsons-Sears building; Lawn bowling at Central Park as well as various family events, gatherings, vacations and trips.
History
Andy Digney was born in London, England on July 27, 1886. His given names were Andrew Charles and in 1905, he immigrated with his elder brother to Raymore Saskatchewan and worked on a farm. In 1914, he met and married Alice Swan and in 1920 they had their one and only child, Ernest ('Dig'). The young family lived in Beatty Saskatchewan where they ran a small general store with a pool hall over the top. Andy sold the store and they moved to Carberry Manitoba where Andy worked selling lightening rods and hanging wallpaper. At this time he met and formed a partnership with someone who owned a hand cranked move projector and in the evenings, he and his wife, traveled to church halls in neighbouring towns showing movies. Eventually, he purchased his own movie projector and opened a small theatre in Carberry. He worked odd jobs during the daytime and projected movies in his small theatre at night. Eventually he made enough money to move to Brandon, Manitoba where he purchased a restaurant which he turned into a theatre with living quarters above. Andy called the theatre 'The Oak' since the mighty oak was strong and stood forever. After starting the first Oak Theatre in Brandon, Manitoba when talking pictures came along, Andy Digney, his wife Alice and son Ernest ('Dig') moved to Burnaby in 1936 and chose the site of their new theatre and home at the corner of Kingsway and Marlborough. The Oak Theatre - which opened on August 4, 1937 - was hailed as an artistic masterpiece for its ultra modern white stucco exterior, floodlights and pink-and-green neon marquee. The interior featured a mirrored ceiling, fireplace, and aquarium and had a colour scheme of orchid, royal blue, silver and black. Andy was a very involved member of the Burnaby community becoming the founding president of the Lion's club and the chairman of the committee raising money for war bonds during World War II. In 1944, Andy suffered a severe heart attack, forcing him to retire, so in 1945 he sold the theatre to Odeon Theatres of Canada who continued to operate at this location until 1968 when competition forced its closure and demolition. Andy and his family relocated to a house at 2698 Bonsor Avenue (after 1959-6521 Bonsor Ave.) on 3/4 acres where he spent much of his time cultivating a lovely garden. In about 1946, Andy was approached by the B.C. Midget Auto Racing Association, who were looking for a good location to race the smaller, racing cars, popular at the time. Andy was interested and purchased 10 acres of property located near the corner of Irmin Street and MacPherson Avenue and built a race track. The Digney Speedway opened on July 8, 1948 with stands that had capacity of holding 4500 people. In 1949, when the popularity of midget racing declined, Digney started racing roadsters. However, he struggled to find local drivers, and it was expensive to bring in drivers from elsewhere. In 1951 Digney found a winner: jalopy racing. Local men would buy 1930s cars and strip them down, remove the glass, and weld the doors shut. By early 1952 over forty cars were showing up for jalopy races. By the early 1950s the Speedway was well established, with coverage in the sports pages and on radio. Andy's son Ernest Digney (also known as Dig) worked at the race track but moved away with his wife in 1951 to work in Seattle. Dig and his wife Joyce, along with their two young sons, Paul and Bruce returned to Burnaby in 1953 moving into a 550 square foot apartment located above the Digney Speedway restrooms. In 1954 Simpsons-Sears built a large store on Kingsway and their parking lot came up to the back garden of the family home on Bonsor Avenue. Andy thought of building small stores on his property but in the end decided to build a bowling alley, clearing out his beautiful garden. The Digney Bowl opened on August 19,1955 and Andy Digney, his wife Alice, son 'Dig' and daughter in law Joyce all worked at both the Speedway and the Bowling Alley. In 1956 Andy decided to finally retire and sold the bowling alley and home to his son 'Dig' which he paid for over time. 'Dig' and his family moved into the house on Bonsor Avenue and ran the bowling alley until their son Bruce took over in 1980. Andy Digney died in England in 1964 while on his world tour. His wife Alice died on June 3, 1982 and their son, Ernest ('Dig') died November 27, 2009.
