Scope and Content: Series consists of records created and received by the City Archives during the development and administration of its archival program. Records pertain to the intellectual and physical control of archival material, including appraisal, acquisition, arrangement and description, provision of access, and preservation and conservation.

History: In February 2001, Council formally approved the City's Corporate Records Management Program. The Program manages the creation, maintenance, and disposition of the records of the City of Burnaby. An integral part of that program is the Records Classification System and Retention Schedule (RCSRS), which provides standardized classification codes among all municipal departments and identifies the retention periods for all classes of records created or received by the City. The City Archives, opened November 10, 2001, is the official repository for all inactive civic records of permanent administrative, legal, fiscal, historical, evidential, or informational value to the City of Burnaby. The Archives is guided by its Mandate and Acquisition Policy which was first adopted by Council on August 13, 2001, and revised on September 18, 2006 to include the acquisition and preservation of private (non-governmental) records that compliment the official city records and enhance understanding of the history and development of Burnaby. Scope and Content: Track 1: This portion of the recording pertains to Gail’s school years, her activities, household living arrangements, responsibilities, jobs, toys and games, and friends. 00:00-2:46: Gail describes growing up in South Burnaby, on her parents’ farm on Marine Drive, which her father had purchased from the people he worked for. She talks about attending Riverway West Elementary School, then McPherson Junior High school, and Burnaby South High School. Gail describes the games and activities she participated in at school, both formal and informal. She discusses her first real job as a teenager, as a page at the Burnaby Public Library. 2:46-6:09: Gail recalls her responsibilities at home, and earning money. She talks about her family’s living arrangements. She describes her family, immediate and extended, and her family’s history on the farm. Gail discusses the economic difficulties of farming, and the job her father got when he leased the farm to a tenant. 6:09-10:15: Gail describes her playmates, with whom she played in the nearby bush, and recalls how the time of year and the weather affected their play. She mentions a roller skating rink on Edmonds Street, but notes that such amenities were uncommon then. Gail lists the organized youth activities she participated in: Brownies, C.G.I.T., and Explorers. She discusses the toys and games she played with at home with her sisters. Gail describes her family’s living arrangements, and how the large house included a big rumpus room with a television set. She talks about her family’s closeness with extended family. 10:15-12:13: Gail recalls that the distance between her home and school made it necessary to have lunch at school, and shares how this created a special group of friends. She relates how living near Marine Drive, which was then a highway, affected her. Gail recalls going to Sunday school with her neighbor’s children in her elementary school years, but describes her family as not being very connected to church. She talks about participating in Brownies and Explorers.

Biographical Notes: Hazel Simnett was born in Burnaby in 1922 and grew up looking up to her father Frederick Simnett who was very involved in labour and unions. A politically active citizen, Hazel Simnett has supported the Canadian Commonwealth Federation (CCF) and the New Democratic Party (NDP). She once ran as a New Democratic Party candidate for Burnaby City Council. In 2006, Hazel Simnett won the Burnaby Local Hero Award for her volunteer work at the New Vista Society where she served as chair for a number of years. She also served as a member of the Burnaby Historical Society and established the Hazel Simnett Endowment with the Burnaby Public Library to bring a collection of books on Canadian history and social issues.

After studying philosophy at the University of Victoria, he became interested in the educational forces that had shaped his own life. He completed master’s and doctoral degrees in educational studies at the University of British Columbia with a particular interest in the history of adult and higher education in the province. In 2012, Eric worked for the City of Burnaby as a field researcher and writer, conducting interviews for the City Archives and Museum Oral History Program.
