- History
- In February 2001, Council formally approved the City's Corporate Records Management Program. The Program manages the creation, maintenance, and disposition of the records of the City of Burnaby. An integral part of that program is the Records Classification System and Retention Schedule (RCSRS), which provides standardized classification codes among all municipal departments and identifies the retention periods for all classes of records created or received by the City. The City Archives, opened November 10, 2001, is the official repository for all inactive civic records of permanent administrative, legal, fiscal, historical, evidential, or informational value to the City of Burnaby. The Archives is guided by its Mandate and Acquisition Policy which was first adopted by Council on August 13, 2001, and revised on September 18, 2006 to include the acquisition and preservation of private (non-governmental) records that compliment the official city records and enhance understanding of the history and development of Burnaby. The Archives is located in the McGill Branch of the Burnaby Public Library. City Archivists:

- History
- The Burnaby Historical Society was founded in 1957. The Historical Society developed a community archives by collecting, compiling and preserving various materials with historical value to the City of Burnaby. It gathered miscellaneous documents, photographs and other items while also soliciting and acquiring entire collections or groups of archival records. In 1991, the Historical Society was provided a permanent space to house their growing collection at the Burnaby Village Museum and they continued to collect and expand their holdings. After the creation of the City of Burnaby Archives in 2001, the Burnaby Historical Society and the City of Burnaby began discussing the possibility of uniting the two collections. In February 2007, an agreement was signed between the two institutions which resulted in the merger of the Society's Community Archives with the City Archives. All records and photographs that had been collected by the Historical Society were transferred into the custody of the City and were moved from the Burnaby Village Museum to the City Archives in the McGill Branch of the Burnaby Public Library. The Burnaby Historical Society disbanded in 2018.

- Burnaby's first library was founded in 1927 as the North Burnaby Library Association. Its first library building was established in 1935 on Hastings Street. In 1954, Burnaby enacted Bylaw No. 3522 to establish the Burnaby Public Library (BPL) and in 1957 BPL merged with the North Burnaby Library Association. BPL's first permanent library was the McGill branch, built in North Burnaby in 1961 and named after North Burnaby Library Association volunteer Grace McGill. Following McGill, BPL then established the Kingsway branch, Central Park branch, and Cameron branch. Central Park was replaced by the Bob Prittie Metrotown branch in 1991 and Kingsway with the Tommy Douglas branch in 2009.

- Track 1: This portion of the recording pertains to Gail’s school years, her activities, household living arrangements, responsibilities, jobs, toys and games, and friends. 00:00-2:46: Gail describes growing up in South Burnaby, on her parents’ farm on Marine Drive, which her father had purchased from the people he worked for. She talks about attending Riverway West Elementary School, then McPherson Junior High school, and Burnaby South High School. Gail describes the games and activities she participated in at school, both formal and informal. She discusses her first real job as a teenager, as a page at the Burnaby Public Library. 2:46-6:09: Gail recalls her responsibilities at home, and earning money. She talks about her family’s living arrangements. She describes her family, immediate and extended, and her family’s history on the farm. Gail discusses the economic difficulties of farming, and the job her father got when he leased the farm to a tenant. 6:09-10:15: Gail describes her playmates, with whom she played in the nearby bush, and recalls how the time of year and the weather affected their play. She mentions a roller skating rink on Edmonds Street, but notes that such amenities were uncommon then. Gail lists the organized youth activities she participated in: Brownies, C.G.I.T., and Explorers. She discusses the toys and games she played with at home with her sisters. Gail describes her family’s living arrangements, and how the large house included a big rumpus room with a television set. She talks about her family’s closeness with extended family. 10:15-12:13: Gail recalls that the distance between her home and school made it necessary to have lunch at school, and shares how this created a special group of friends. She relates how living near Marine Drive, which was then a highway, affected her. Gail recalls going to Sunday school with her neighbor’s children in her elementary school years, but describes her family as not being very connected to church. She talks about participating in Brownies and Explorers.
