- History
- The idea of having a "Housewives' Holiday" in South Burnaby originated in February of 1959 when Mary Forsyth attended a Vancouver "Y's" Housewives Holiday and wanted to create one for South Burnaby. Mary Forsyth, Ruth Turner, and Faye Reagh formed a committee in February of 1960 and began planning. Dorothy Turnbull became their treasurer in June. The Housewives' Holiday (a branch of the Clinton-Glenwood Recreation Association) series took place at the then newly renovated Bonsor Hall with events such as "Keep Fit," dancing, Judo, table tennis, and "Living and Learning" as well as guest speakers from places such as the Burnaby School Board, the Metropolitan Health Centre, as well as a nursery offered for children ages three to five. Held each Thursday from 10 am to 2:30 pm, the first session ran from October 6 to December 8 1960.

Many of these photographs were published in the book "In the Shadow by the Sea: Recollections of Burnaby's Barnet Village".
- History
- Henry Stanley Irwin (1890-1966) started work at Barnet mill in 1924. Henry and his wife Elsie May Irwin (Taylor) Irwin (1894-1985) first lived with their two daughters, Eleanor (Nelson) (1924-2005) and Louise (1927-) in a worker's cabin before moving to the Barnet Mill's managers' residence. The household included Elsie's mother, Elizabeth (Shephard) Taylor (1868-1950). The family resided at Barnet until they moved to Vancouver in September 1939. Louise and her older sister Eleanor attended Barnet School like other children in the Barnet area. After the mill closed in 1931, Henry was unemployed for two years. During this time, he hired a horse and driver and cut logs from the slopes of Burnaby Mountain to support his family. The Barnet Lumber Company also known as the Barnet mill was in operation between 1925 and 1932. The mill was located on Burrard Inlet in the neighbourhood of Barnet and was one of the most successful local employers in Burnaby until the 1930s when the Great Depression resulted in a strike at the mill. The City of Burnaby eventually assumed control of the site including all of the homes when the company failed to pay it's taxes. The city then dismantled the mill and sold the property in two parts - the eastern section would become the Kapoor Sawmills Limited and the western portion, the McColl-Frontenac Oil Company.

- History
- John Burton was born in 1912 in New Westminster. He went to Second Street School, Edmonds, Saint Anne's Convent, and St. Louis College and Connaught before graduating from Burnaby South School in 1930. While at high school, John worked at Cowan's Music Store at 716 Columbia Street in New Westminster on Saturdays and after school. John Burton's grandfather, John Foley, was the founder of the Orangeville Sun newspaper in Orangeville, Ontario, established in 1861. He ran the paper until his death in 1882, when his son, John Foley Jr. took over as editor and publisher at the age of sixteen. Two of his daughters were involved in the newspaper: Margaret Foley was a regular contributor to the paper, and John Burton's mother was a typesetter. When John Burton was a teenager, he went to Orangeville to learn the trade from his uncle. He was only there eighteen months when his uncle died December 21, 1932. The family was unable to hold on to the business and the paper amalgamated with the Orangeville Banner newspaper in 1933.

- History
- James P. Dickson was born in Peeblesshire, Scotland. He came to Manitoba first in 1905 when he was 21 years old, but didn’t move to British Columbia until 1909 when he started the Dickson Brothers Flower Shop and Nursery at 3271 Kingsway. He was a landscape gardener, designing the garden for the Model Burnaby Home at the Royal City Fair in 1920 and designing Burnaby exhibits at the provincial fairs at New Westminster in 1922 and 1923. In 1922 he spoke at a South Vancouver Horticultural Association event; the subject of his talk was “Natural Gardens.” J.P. Dickson was a Burnaby School Board Trustee from 1921 to 1924 (chairman in 1924), 1927 to 1932 (chairman from 1929 to 1932) and 1943 to 1944. In 1925 he was the Labour Party Candidate for Reeve of Burnaby. In 1930 he was president of the May Day committee and officiated at the crowning. J.P. Dickson attended the British Columbia School Trustees Association 26th Annual Convention in Vernon with his family and served as the association’s president from 1932 to 1933. The Dickson family lived at 1519 (later 7770) Nelson Avenue, Burnaby. J.P. had at least one child born about 1913, who attended South Burnaby High School in his teen years. According to “Burnaby: A Proud Century” by Pixie McGeachie James Dickson is also known for his part in creating an unofficial presentation to the King George and Queen Elizabeth during their royal visit in 1939. There was no official stop scheduled for Burnaby, but he persuaded the parade marshal beforehand to slow the procession as it approached Royal Oak (and the Chamber of Commerce built a viewing platform there to attract a large crowd). Dickson encouraged everyone to move in to narrow the width of passage on Kingsway. As the royal car appeared on Royal Oak, the crowd surged forward and blocked its path. A Burnaby girl rushed towards the car waving a bouquet from the Dickson Brothers Flower Shop and an aide-du-camp passed it directly to the Queen “who acknowledged the gift with approval just as the car began to move again.”
