Label around film container reads: "CBUT NEWS ITEM of October 7, 1957 "BURNABY MOUNTAIN SOD TURNING" ( Duncan) on permanent loan to Burnaby Centennial Comm."
Scope and Content
Item consists of a silent CBUT News item from October 7, 1957 titled "Burnaby Mountain Sod Turning". The film documents the memorable occasion of the Burnaby Mountain Centennial Project with Lieutenant Governor Frank M. Ross providing a brief address to the attendees before taking a shovel to turn the sod. Other attendees identified include, Councillor Sam Hughes of the Centennial Committee and British Columbia Recreation Minister, Honourable Earl C. Westwood. This event marks the development of a portion of Burnaby Mountain park including the erection of a Centennial building which opened in 1958. The film footage captures views of Burrard Inlet from the mountain top as well as newly erected roads on Burnaby mountain. According to the Burnaby Adverstiser (Vol. 25 No. 27 - October 10, 1957 p.1), Lieutenant Governor Frank M. Ross provided a brief address for the sod turning ceremony which is quoted; "What Burnaby has undertaken is not merely to celebrate the Centennial observance, but it has started something which will last down through the years and provide a lot of pleasure for future generations."
History
This event marks the beginning of a Centennial project to develop a park and erect a pavillion as part of the British Columbia Centennial in 1958. In October 1956, a Burnaby Centennial Committee was appointed to govern over the project with the Reeve and Council at the head of the committee. Councillor S.E. Hughes was appointed as Chairman and W.M. Morrison as Vice Chairman with the organizational structure to include the provision for Honorary Vice Chairman, secretary, treasurer, advisory staff and representative delegates from community groups and working committees. In September 1957, the Centennial Committee submitted detailed plans for a proposed building to be located on the Centennial site on Burnaby Mountain together with a recommendation to create a Building Committee as part of the Centennial Committee. In November 1957, the Burnaby Centennial Committee recommended that the new road from Badger Street and Hastings Street to the Burnaby Mountain site be named Centennial Way. January 1958, councillors Mather and Jamieson were appointed to the committee by council to replace former council members that were no longer in office. Councillor Mather was appointed as Vice Chairman. CBUT station was owned by CBC and was first broadcast on December 16, 1953. "In 1975, the CBC consolidated its Vancouver radio and television operations into one building. Prior to this, CBC's Vancouver radio properties – CBU (690 AM), CBU-FM (105.7) and CBUF-FM (97.7) – had operated from a separate studio facility at 701 Hornby Street, within the basement of the Hotel Vancouver. Together, those stations formed the basis of the Regional Broadcast Centre at 700 Hamilton Street, a few blocks east of its previous radio and television facilities.

History
Donald "Don" A. Copan was born in Victoria B.C. in 1928 and moved with his family to East Vancouver in the mid nineteen thirties. Don graduated from Britannia High School in the nineteen forties and graduated from the BC Provincial Normal School in 1948. In 1952, Don married Barbara Thomson. The couple moved to Highlawn Drive in 1954 where they raised their two sons Angus and Todd. Don and his family were active members of the Willingdon Heights United Church. Don's teaching career began at Westridge Elementary School. He worked in Burnaby as an educator, including serving as the Principal of Twelfth Avenue Elementary School and retired from teaching in 1983. He served on the 1958 and 1971 Burnaby Centennial Committees and was the founding President of the Century Park Museum Association (the non-profit society that operated the Heritage Village Museum from 1971 to 1989, now Burnaby Village Museum). Don served on the Executive of the Century Park Museum Association (CPMA) every year of the organization's existence. Don's wife Barbara Copan was also active in the CPMA, as a volunteer with a focus on the gift shop. In 1982, Don became Burnaby's first "Citizen of the Year" and was awarded the Kushiro cup for his volunteerism. Don was also involved in many other community organizations in the 1970s, including serving as President of the Burnaby Region, Boy Scouts (1975), and as a community resource person of the Board of Burnaby Big Brothers Association. He was Chairman of the Burnaby Family Court for seven years and Chairman of the Lower Mainland Family Court Committee for four years. He was also President of the Burnaby Teachers' Association circa 1974. Barbara Copan died in October 2017 and Don died in June 2020.

History
Burnaby's Centennial Project was conceived to re-create a permanent memorial to colonial settlement on the west coast based on the period between 1890 and 1920. The commemorative project was initiated by The Burnaby Centennial '71 Committee in close co-operation with the Burnaby Historical Society, Burnaby Parks and Recreation Commission and Project Consultants: Hopping, Kovach, Grinnell, Design Consultants Ltd.; General Contractor : Ballarin Bros. Ltd; Finish Contractor: Franco Pozzollo - Trevi Construction; Architects: Donald Erb and Associates; Landscape: Burnaby Parks & Recreation; Mechanical: Slinn S.P. and Co. Ltd. and Electrical: Arnold Nemetz Engineering. Student Labour from Douglas College and Simon Fraser University provided by "Operation Ahoy" (in conjunction with the Opportunities for Youth programme). The Century Park Museum Association held it's founding meeting on October 26, 1971 in the Council Chambers of the Burnaby Municipal Hall. The Association was founded under the auspices of the Burnaby Centennial '71 Committee, to adminster Burnaby's Centennial '71 Commemorative project, "Heritage Village" located at Canada Way and Deer Lake Avenue. The original project proposal included a museum, blacksmith shop, buggy and bicycle shop, print shop, general store, green grocery store, ice cream parlour, dentist office, apothecary shop and jail. The first phase of the Heritage Village (Park) was officially opened on November 19, 1971. For the opening the Print Shop, Blacksmith Shop and Pharmacy were operating. The General Store, Land Registry Office, Chinese Store, Bike and Buggy Repair Shop and Barber-Dentist were filled with temporary exhibits illustrating the future plans. The schoolhouse featured a class in penmanship given by Mr. H.B. MacLean to a group of children dressed in period costume. Coffee was served to those attending in the area which will be developed as an Ice Cream Parlour. The Interurban Tram from Kingsway and Edmonds was partially restored for the opening.

History
Burnaby's Centennial Project was conceived to re-create a permanent memorial to "founders of our west coast society", how they lived, how they worked, played and created the basic pattern of our present city. The project was patterned after "Barkerville" and "Upper Canada Village". The Municipality of Burnaby assembled components of a park on a five acre site located on the east side of Century Gardens and just north of Deer Lake. The site was named "Heritage Village" which would be compirised of an 1890s townsite with a Main Street bordered by workshops, businesses and offices and a village square with a bandstand, a maple tree and boardwalks. The first installation of "Heritage Village" was funded by a combination of Federal, Provincial and Municipal grants with work beginning on April 10, 1971. The first phase of the Heritage Village (Park) was officially opened on November 19, 1971. The project included the following buildings; a blacksmith shop, buggy and bicycle shop, general store, land registry office, schoolhouse, print shop, apothecary shop, Barber - dentist, Chinese shop window display, ice cream parlour, Interurban tram and station, restored country home (E.W. Bateman house).
