Photograph of Woodward cottage as seen from Deer Lake. The cottage was a prefabricted building designed by J.J. Mahoney and architect Joseph Bowman and was manufactured in Vancouver by the B.C. Mills Timber and Trading Company and erected here in 1904. Maude Woodward established a post-office here which was operated by her sister, Harriet. Harriet also began a small private school here, the first in Burnaby Lake. The cottage was enlarged with several additions until 1912 when the Woodwards built a new house. This photograph shows the cottage as it appeared in 1990.

Photograph of three men standing outside a fence next to a log cabin. The man standing to the right with the white shirt may be Claude Hill, but the others are unidentified. This cabin may have belonged to early Burnaby resident Charles Sprott. During the late 1880s and early 1890s, Charles Sprott settled on a piece of land in Murrayville (Langley) near the border with the United States. When his cabin burned down in 1891, Sprott moved to Burnaby where another former Murrayville resident, Claude Hill had also relocated.

Photograph of James Dykes (Jim) Shearer, his wife Katherine (Dormer), and their daughter, Katie posed in front of the temporary shelter erected at 5573 Buckingham Avenue during the construction of their home on that site. The coupled immigrated to Canada in 1910. Their son, James Francis Shearer, was born shortly after the picture was taken, on April 11, 1913 (died Aril 24, 1997 in London, England). The house was commissioned by Katherine's father, Francis Joseph Dormer, who published newspapers in South Africa. The couple later divorced and returned to the UK around the end of the decade.

Photograph of an unidentified person sitting on the porch of the Maude and Harriet Woodward cottage. This house was a prefabricated cottage erected in 1904. The cottages were designed by J.J. Mahoney and architect Joseph Bowman and were manufactured in Vancouver by the B.C. Mills Timber and Trading Company. Maude Woodward established a post-office here which was operated by her sister, Harriet. Harriet also began a small private school here, the first in Burnaby Lake. The cottage was enlarged with several additions until 1912 when the Woodwards built a new house.
