Photograph of an L shaped building with a flat front. Letters on the front of the store read, "Ontario Liquor Store / Grocery / Tailor." Four men are standing near the store on the boardwalk, three boys are sitting, and a woman is standing on the boardwalk leaning against the fence on the far left. As is normal for most tintypes, the image appears reversed, left to right. (Few tintype cameras included a mirror or prism that made the image appear 'right way round').

Scope and Content
Recording is of an interview with John Burton conducted by Colin Stevens inside the Music Shop at Burnaby Village Museum, 1988. John Burton discusses his experiences working in music shops in New Westminster in the 1920s. Major themes discussed are: sales, displays, popular culture.
Biographical Notes
John Burton was born in 1912 in New Westminster. He went to Second Street School, then Edmonds, then Saint Anne's Convent, and St. Louis College and Connaught before graduating from Burnaby South School in 1930. While at High School, John worked at Cowan's Music Store at 716 Columbia Street in New Westminster on Saturdays and after school. John Burton's grandfather John Foley was the founder of the Orangeville Sun newspaper in Orangeville, Ontario, established in 1861. He ran the paper until his death in 1882, when his son, John Foley Jr. took over as editor and publisher at the age of sixteen. Two of his daughters were involved in the newspaper; Margaret Foley was a regular contributor to the paper, and John Burton's mother was a typesetter. When John Burton was a teenager, he went to Orangeville to learn the trade from his uncle. Unfortunately, he was only there eighteen months when his uncle died December 21, 1932. The family was unable to hold on to the business and the paper amalgamated with the Orangeville Banner newspaper in 1933.

Scope and Content
Recording is an interview with Eddy Wood conducted by Burnaby Village Museum employee Eric Damer, September 24, 2012. Major themes discussed are: Regent Fish Market and the Vancouver Heights business district.
Biographical Notes
Eddy Wood was born in 1943 and grew up working in various shops in the Vancouver Heights area of Burnaby. Eddy's father, also Eddy Wood, bought the Regent Fish Market in 1947 or 1948. When the senior Eddy Wood died in 1960, his wife took over the fish market and ran it for the next fifteen years. Their son Eddy then stepped in and continued with the family business. Through this, the Wood family was able to run the Regent Fish Market for over fifty years. Eddy Wood recalls the busy nature of the business in the post-war period, the role of the streetcar in bringing customers to the area and the preferences of the local customers. Vancouver Heights merchants joined together to form the North Burnaby Merchants in 1954. During Eddy Wood's tenure, the North Burnaby Merchants created “Hats Off Day” and organized to fight the Provincial Department of Highways’ plan to remove street level parking along Hastings Street.

In “The Store” film maker Teresa Switzer reminds us of the power of second chances. She shares the story of opening a second hand store called “Yesterday’s Collectibles” with her friend, Pete. The store was located on West Broadway in Vancouver from 1983 to 1985. She recalls the challenges of operating a small business, coupled with the personal challenge of the end of her marriage. The film ends with a reflection on the lessons learned from the experience, and her good fortune of finding a second chance with her new partner, Patrick.
History/Biography
Teresa Switzer is originally from Winnipeg. She moved to the Westcoast in 1973, and has lived in South Burnaby since 1997. After the store closed, Teresa worked as a project coordinator for cancer research at UBC and BC Cancer Research. Teresa and Patrick Lucy were together from 1985 until Patrick passed away in 2007. Patrick was an Exhibit Preparator at Burnaby Village Museum for 13 years before retiring in 2006.
