1 photograph : b&w tintype ; 10.6 x 13.8 cm
Scope and Content
Photograph of an L shaped building with a flat front. Letters on the front of the store read, "Ontario Liquor Store / Grocery / Tailor." Four men are standing near the store on the boardwalk, three boys are sitting, and a woman is standing on the boardwalk leaning against the fence on the far left. As is normal for most tintypes, the image appears reversed, left to right. (Few tintype cameras included a mirror or prism that made the image appear 'right way round').
History
From Denby Bros. Shoe Store at 163 West Pender in Vancouver. Stafford Ague Denby (1882-1957) started peddling shoe findings in 1918 around Vancouver to repair shops around town from the back of an old Ford. Two of his brothers, William Albert (1873-1947) and Melvin Stanley (1879-1953) joined him in 1919 to form Denby Bros & Co. Ltd Leather and Shoe Findings at 163 West Pender. William Gordon Pope started helping out in the shoe store at the age of 10. He eventually ran the store with his cousin, Pat Denby (son of William A. Denby) starting in the 1950s. The store closed in 1974.

Scope and Content
Photograph of the exterior of a store on the ground floor of a two-storey building, with a sign painted on the front face of the second floor. It reads, "A. MacKenzie & Co / Jubilee Store." There are two men in suits standing out in front of the display windows that show stacks of boxes and cans. The lot around the building looks vacant, but fenced. There is a wagon drawn by a team of two horses parked or travelling towards the store on the right side of the photograph. The store was owned by Alexander MacKenzie, (1870-1949) who arrived in Vancouver in 1907. There is a discrepancy in the date of the photograph; the accession register dates the photograph 1909 while the donation form signed by the donor dates all the photographs in the accession as 1907 or 1908. Annotations on the bottom front of the card mount read: "Ralph Libby" and "Vancouver B.C." This store later became the Matheson and Sons Market.

Photograph of Bill Hay (on left) and James Scott standing at the front entrance to the Model Grocery Store, situated at 2nd Street and 15th Avenue in Burnaby. The store has wooden shiplap siding all around and a peaked roof with a tall false front with a wide cornice at the top. The righthand side of the eaves show, and the details of the gutter and downspout are clearly visible. The bottom front of the building is all one store. Display windows fill the front in three sections. On the extreme left and right are two wide windows. In the centre is another narrower window. Between these windows are two doors, set in about five feet. A canvas awning (furled) spans the store over the windows. Inside the windows, displays are visible. In the right hand window are stacks of tinned goods. In the centre, flats of fruit set up to face outwards. In the left window is a large display of White Swan soap. Below the right and left windows are small enamelled signs advertising Fleischman's Yeast. No other sign or advertising is visible on the exterior. In the right hand doorway is a display of washboard and corn brooms. A canvas covered horse drawn delivery wagon with a "308 6th St. Model Grocery" sign is positioned to the right rear of the store.
