- History
- Fraser Wilson was born in Vancouver on July 1, 1905 and brought up in the Grandview area, with fond memories of berry picking in the wilds of North Burnaby as a child. He left school in 1923 and, although interested in art, he didn’t try to make it a career until a double hernia forced him to stop working in factories and start apprenticing for commercial artists, later opening a sign shop of his own. In 1926 he worked in Australia as a set decoration painter, but had to return to Vancouver when his father fell ill in 1927. Wilson was a political cartoonist for the Vancouver Sun newspaper from 1937 to 1947. When he moved to Burnaby in April of 1943 he was also the artist and author of the cartoon-type serial “Bill Northwood - the personification of the modern Resource Manager” which served to teach the community why forests are important and should be preserved. He lost his job at the Vancouver Sun in 1947; he was the chairman of the Co-ordinating Committee of Newspaper Unions which was involved in the Vancouver Province strike and his publisher didn’t approve. Soon after, Bill White, then-president of the Marine Workers’ and Boilermakers Union, asked Wilson to decorate the Marine Workers’ Auditorium at 3337 West Pender, the Union's hall. The mural that Wilson painted depicts the BC labour movement to honour British Columbia’s workers. This mural launched a new career for Wilson; to this day, hospitals and libraries across British Columbia display his work in lobbies. In 1988, when the building housing the Marine Workers’ Auditorium was sold to a new owner, Fraser Wilson’s mural was removed from the wall, restored by Ferdinand Petrov of the Vancouver Centennial Committee, and installed permanently at the new Maritime Labour Centre on Victoria Drive in Vancouver. Throughout the 1960s, Wilson served as president of the Burnaby Historical Society. He ran for City Council as a Burnaby Citizens Association candidate in 1969 and 1970. Fraser Wilson died on 31 July 1992.

Also included is a map of the federal Burnaby-Douglas riding (ca. 1990). Also included is typed copy of R. A. McMath's Comments on "A Report of Saskatchewan's Socialist Government" which appeared as a paid advertisement in both Vancouver daily papers on election day August 27, 1969. McMath challenges the "Report" which contains excerpts of a speech by Ross Thatcher, Saskatchewan's Liberal Premier, on the CCF and the NDP. Also included is a informational flyer on the BC Parliament Buildings from 1969 (28th Parliament, 3rd Session) and lists the members of Parliament. Also included is a booklet from Simon Fraser University listing the donors, which Hazel Simnett is one of, from July 1, 1989 to June 30, 1990. Also is an envelope in which the following was found: 1990 BC Election Act, three sheets referring to Joan Sawicki's election expenses, Canada Post receipt, report on Joan Sawicki's campaign from 1991, list of Burnaby Willingdon team, notice of nomination meeting in 1990, BC election calendar, 1990 Guide to the Elections Act of British Columbia, faxed letter from John Pollard to campaign managers, six sheets of Appointment of Scrutineer (one blank, rest signed by Hazel Simnett), fax of Provincial General Election Calendar of Events, receipt for nomination paper for Joan Sawicki, receipt for declaration of candidate for Joan Sawicki and two copies of photocopy of signatures on Nomination Paper for Joan Sawicki. Also included is Burnaby-Willingdon NDP Constituency Association Minutes of March 14, 1996 Executive Meeting.

- The Burnaby Gem and Mineral Club was formed in Burnaby in 1963 and became a chartered member club of the Lapidary Rock and Mineral Society of British Columbia on June 15, 1965. Meetings were held at Bonsor Hall on the third Tuesday of every month. The club became a registered federation member of the Gem and Mineral Federation of Canada in 1978. From 1978 to 1985, Marguerite “Mary” Skinner was the recording secretary. Mary and her husband John Skinner were members for 21 years, and during that time, John organized all of the “big shows” with the help and support of fellow members. On December 15, 1985, the general membership of the Burnaby Gem and Mineral Club voted to close the club. They had a final dinner meeting on February 18, 1986, at the Copper Kettle on Kingsway.

- History
- Warren Mulligan, son of Julia Mulligan and brother of Maurice Mulligan, was born in Semans, Saskatchewan, in [1921] and moved to Langley, British Columbia, in 1934. During his youth, he attended Langley High School and was a member of the first Tuxis group at the United Church in Langley. He was also an Assistant Scoutmaster of the Milner Troop under Reverend Daniel Donaldson. During World War II, he spent seven years serving in the Royal Canadian Navy and retired in 1947. In 1949, Warren married Mary Beulah Bush, who was also from Langley. They had two sons. Warren joined the B.C. Jail Service in 1949 as a guard at Oakalla Prison Farm, later becoming the Chief Custodial Officer for the Young Offenders' Unit. He also had experience in the Westgate Area. In 1955, he was named Deputy Warden of the Prince George Provincial Jail. He was appointed as Warden of the Prince George Provincial Jail in 1956. During his time at the P.G. Jail, Warren was involved in administration and professional program training. In 1963, he was appointed as Warden of Oakalla Prison Farm, a position he served in until 1974. During his time within the B.C. Provincial Jail Service, Warren was credited with innovations in the provincial penal system, particularly in relation to prisoners' group therapy and relations between prison staff and inmates.
