Scope and Content: Photograph of school children with their teacher, who is standing to the right of the picture. Crake as the teacher. However, the first two-room Armstrong Avenue School was built in 1911 with Miss Lilly Mackenzie as the teacher. The present Armstrong school was built in 1955 with eleven classrooms. Later additions to the school occurred in 1962 (two classrooms), 1964 (four classrooms), 1967 (four classrooms), and 1969 (four classrooms). Annotation in blue ballpoint pen on back of photographs reads, "1st class of Armstrong Ave School. 1913 / Miss L Crake teacher."

History: The first Armstrong Avenue School was built in 1911 and it consisted of two rooms. The present school was built in 1955 with 11 classrooms. Additions: 1962 - two classrooms, 1964 - four classrooms, 1967 - four classrooms.

Heritage Value: The site for the Armstrong Avenue school was cleared in 1911. In 1955 the original structure was replaced by a new building and additions were constructed in 1962, 1964, 1967 and 1969. Armstrong Avenue was named after J.C. Armstrong, an early property owner of Burnaby who was involved in the effort to make Burnaby a municipality in 1892.

History: Burnaby's first May Day celebration took place on Saturday May 23, 1925 in Central Park. The May Queen and her court were chosen by "lot" in Burnaby Muncipal Council chambers with candidates submitted from Burnaby's public and high schools. Names were placed in a silk hat and Burnaby Reeve Alexander K. McLean drew the successful candidates. Ruth Bearn from Riverway West School was chosen as queen and Agness Kilgour from North Burnaby High School was chosen as Princess Burnaby. Candidates chosen for the Queen's court included First Maid of honour, Jessie Gungeon (Kingsway West School); Second Maid of Honour, Margaret McCallum (Schou Street School) and Third Maid of Honour, Eileen Jacques (Armstrong Avenue School). Candidates chosen for the Princess Burnaby court included, First Maid of Honour, Nellie Mitchell (North Burnaby High School); Second Maid of Honour, Lucretia Adair (South Burnaby High School) and Third Maid of Honour, Louis Lister (South Burnaby High School). Scope and Content: Records consist of 14 digitized photographs of Robert Burnaby Park and the Massey family with views of buildings, gardens, and trails.

History: James Massey was born in Lancaster, England, in 1890 and immigrated to Burnaby in 1910. He married Alice Wilcock who also immigrated to Canada from Lancaster. James and Alice (Willcock) Massey were married in New Westminster on September 11, 1912. The couple built a house on three adjoining lots on the south side of 13th Avenue in Burnaby near Cumberland Road. James and Alice had three daughters, Betty, Grace, and Evelyn. James worked in road construction for the Burnaby Municipality, assisting to build Sperling Avenue (formerly named Pole Line Road) in 1912. He also worked in the brick yard in the glen behind the B.C. Penitentiary, which was owned by the Cogband family. In 1933, James accepted the job of caretaker for Robert Burnaby Park and moved his family onto the property. He was paid 30 dollars a week and the house was rent-free, leaving the family to rent out their house on 13th Avenue for extra revenue. The house that they moved into in Robert Burnaby Park was formerly owned by the Ramsey family and was a pre-fabricated design with no bathroom and a wood stove in the kitchen for heating. The park is situated south of Burnaby Lake on District Lots 87, 89, and 90. The land was originally owned by the Ramsey family, who purchased the property in 1905 and then sold it to Mr. Vidal in 1909. Annie Ramsey bought it back in 1917, but lost it to the city through tax sale proceedings where she entered into a lease agreement allowing her to live on the property until her death in 1926. As the caretaker of Robert Burnaby Park and Burnaby Lake, James also fulfilled the role of game warden. In his role as game warden, James would watch for any poachers, pull traps, take any firearms from children and also act as a deputy for the Provincial Police, which later became the R.C.M.P. The Massey family's dog, Pete, a spaniel cross, assisted Jim in tracking down any traps. Mr. Massey had three aviaries on the park property, where he raised canaries, and in 1939, he installed a goldfish pond. He was also responsible for constructing a playground and raising the flag up the flag pole on all public holidays. The family built a greenhouse behind their house to grow plants for the extensive park gardens. James' brother was the caretaker of Queens Park in New Westminster and assisted him in the planning and design of the gardens. During the 1930s, many unemployed script worked for Mr. Massey in clearing land and building trails and a bridge within the park. A garage was built at the foot of 2nd Street with two additional rooms built by Mr. Massey with the intention of them being used by the Parks Board. However, it was never used for this purpose and the Air Raid Patrol building from the 2nd Street School grounds was moved to the park and used for storage. The Army for the Common Good gardens were located on the west side of Hill Avenue with a shed for tools. The Army of the Common Good grew food and distributed it within the community to those in need during the Depression. The Massey family moved from the park in 1947 and James decided to run for the Burnaby School in the early 1950s. James retired at 65 years of age but continued to work as a custodian at the Armstrong Avenue School until the age of 72. James died in 1985 in Princeton, B.C., at the age of 95.

Scope and Content: Subseries consists of Pollard family photographs.

History: Joseph Pollard was born in Boston, Lancashire and moved to Preston, Lancashire where he apprenticed as a butcher and worked as an attendant at Rainhill Mental Hospital. In 1909 he immigrated to Canada; first to London Ontario, then to Brandon, Manitoba where he met his future wife, Agnes Colvin. Agnes Jane Colvin grew up on a farm in Northern Ireland near Bushmills, county Antrim. She, her sister Mary and brother James emigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1910. Agnes was hospitalized wtih scarlet fever. As soon as she was well enough, she moved to her cousin’s farm in Moosomin, Saskatchewan and began nursing at a mental hospital in Brandon. Joseph and Agnes were married on September 13, 1912. After traveling to England for their honeymoon, they settled in Port Coquitlam, BC in 1913 where their first child, May Elizabeth was born. Shortly after, they bought their first home in East Burnaby at 332 17th Avenue where their second and third children, Joe and Sidney, were born. The Pollards second home was at 1095 16th Avenue in the Edmonds district of Burnaby. Twins Peggy and Claire were born in this house. In 1916, Joseph enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force and was sent overseas to England where he remained for the duration of the WWI. In May of 1919, he returned home and opened J. Pollard Meat Market in South Burnaby. He operated this business until 1936 when he and Agnes bought Lily Auto Court on Kingsway in Burnaby. They managed this business for about seven years, then sold the hotel and retired to Vancouver. Joseph and Agnes's eldest child May graduated from Burnaby South High School in 1930 and the Provincial Normal School in Vancouver in 1931. She worked as a substitute teacher for four years before getting her first teaching assignment at Armstrong Avenue School in 1935 where she taught grades one to five. After two years, she was promoted to Nelson Avenue School where she taught grade one for two years. She married in April of 1939 and her two daughters, Diane and Marilyn, were born in 1948 and 1952 respectively.

History: Burnaby's first May Day celebration took place on Saturday May 23, 1925 in Central Park. The May Queen and her court were chosen by "lot" in Burnaby Muncipal Council chambers with candidates submitted from Burnaby's public and high schools. Names were placed in a silk hat and Burnaby Reeve Alexander K. McLean drew the successful candidates.
