- On May 10, 1951, the Burnaby News-Courier reported on the new Parkcrest subdivision, saying: "Central Burnaby is the scenic locale of a successful attempt to produce modern houses economically and yet avoid the mass production effect common to other housing developments. That is one of the many highlights peculiar to the new Parkcrest development of 275 homes...By giving home purchasers a wide choice of finishes, extras and colours, hundreds of variations are possible on the six basic floor plans...Travelling time by car to Hastings and Granville from Parkcrest has been clocked at 15 minutes...Both primary and junior high schools are within walking distance. A modern shopping centre is planned for the future...Several streets are laid out in a straight but irregular manner, thus eliminating the prosaic side by side appearance block by block, as in other housing developments."

- Photograph of Charles Bruce Patterson and his first wife, Elva Patterson.
- Charles Bruce Patterson (called Bruce) built many early homes in the Edmonds district of Burnaby. He also built the Sperling Avenue School in 1913. For a time he was put in charge of Vulcan Iron Works of New Westminster, a business owned by his father Dugald Campbell Patterson Sr. Bruce quickly developed a passion for wrought iron work which would last his entire lifetime. Some years after the Vulcan Iron Works property was absorbed into the Dominion Bridge Company, Bruce opened a smaller iron works operation in the Arrow Transfer building on Granville Island. He named this company Vulcan Metal Works Ltd. Here, he made a variety of artistic railings for homes, churches and apartment buildings and drew inspiration from both Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. In addition to his wrought iron railings, he also designed and created many other architectural pieces which included iron patio furniture, leaded glass window panels for French doors, headboards, and decorative designs for the exteriors of clocks. Bruce also built and renovated numerous homes throughout the lower mainland. Bruce married Elva Eleanore Elliott on July 17, 1918. After Elva’s death he married again at the age of 82. However, she has always been employed in the Burnaby District. She presently works as a librarian at Burnaby Public Library. Prior to that, she was employed at Simon Fraser University, Burnaby campus. She loves Canada, but still treasures the fond memories of her childhood in Kenya. Yasmin visits Kenya every 8-10 years to feel the warm waters & white sands of the tropical beaches.

- Recording of an interview with Elsie Hughes (nee Parker) that was conducted by Jim Wolf in the Love farmhouse on site at the Burnaby Village Museum on May 1, 1989. Jim Wolf walks through the Love Farmhouse with Elsie Hughes after it was moved onto the site of the Burnaby Village Museum in 1988. Elsie Hughes is the daughter of William and Sarah Parker and granddaughter of Jesse and Martha Love. Elsie married John Malcolm Hughes at St. Alban's Church in Burnaby on April 9, 1942. Elsie and Jim discuss the furnishings, decoration and amenities of the house at the time she moved into it in 1925 with her family. Elsie’s recollections were to be used as a resource for redecorating and refurnishing the house as it was in 1925 for its use as an exhibit at the Burnaby Village Museum. An unidentified man is also present, and sometimes contributes to the conversation.

- History
- Milton "Milt" Waller Knight was born in Canada circa 1904. His wife Virginia Harrington was born in Duluth, Minnesota circa 1905 and lived most of her life in Canada. Virginia was the first person in British Columbia to breed budgies when she began in 1932 and by 1939 she and her husband created the first crested budgie in the world. By 1942, Virginia was also housing two-hundred and fifty birds at the home of her mother, Mrs. N.M. Herington, which was located at 1775 West 13th Avenue in Burnaby. Milton and Virginia Knight moved into their own home during the war years but, as they could not get their large aviary moved, they were forced to sell their crested birds. When they started up in their birds again, they obtained some of their crested back. By 1948 they had created two types of crested: those with a miniature cockatiel crest and those with a crest like a crested canary. By 1950 they had created the crested in over twelve colours of budgie, including cobalt and yellow-wing greens. The Knights lived together at 3718 Sperling Avenue (later renumbered 5255 Sperling Avenue) and opened Lakeview Aviaries on their one acre property at Deer Lake where Virginia specialized in budgies (Budgerigars) and bred the first albino in Canada and the first crested variety in the world. She kept Java rice birds, button quail, red factor canaries, cockatiels, finches, love birds and twelve varieties of budgerigar. She was a member of the British Columbia Budgerigar and Foreign Bird Society. The facilities at Lakeview Aviaries included two heated aviary cages and three outdoor flight cages constructed by Milton. Lakeview housed the only "hospital" facilities in the city for cage birds, which featured an electrically heated, thermostatically controlled hospital cage. Virginia, known in the community as “the Bird Doctor” nursed many sick birds back to health free of charge for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or SPCA. The Knights often donated their trained birds to sick and injured children, for Virginia believed, “Budgies do wonders for the kiddies. They make them forget their troubles and of course a happy mental outlook is a definite aid to better physical health.” The couple’s personal pets included eight different types of parrot, three talking budgies, a dancing bare-eyes cockatoo, three talking cockatiel, and “Hoppy” her pet owl. By 1952, they had a toucan and a macaw as pets. In later years, they added two small dogs. By 1965, Milton had over 25 years of service as a truck driver at the Vancouver Service Department. He was also an avid collector of antique watches and clocks. He reconditioned the timepieces, systematically restoring them to their original condition. He was a member of the National Association of Clock and Watch Collectors. Milt also treasured old music boxes and restored their large metal discs and rolls to “as new” condition. Milton Knight died March 7, 1966 at 62 years of age. Virginia Knight lived alone at 5755 Sperling Avenue after her husband’s death and continued her work at the Lakeview Aviary where she “doctored 700-800 [birds] a year free of charge (except medicine) and gave SPCA donations up to $1000 a year.” Virginia Knight passed away November 10, 1987 at 82 years of age.

- Clock - wall clock in a wood case with a pendulum enclosed by a lower extension of the case. The case face is octagonal with a round clock dial. The clock is made by the "New Haven" clock company of the USA. and is marked as a "REGULATOR"
- There is a paper label glued to the back of the clock : "8 Day ERIE REGULATOR / TIME PIECE / MADE BY / THE NEW HAVEN CLOCK CO. / NEW HAVEN CONN. / U.S.A. / DIRECTIONS FOR REGULATING THE CLOCK / If the clock should go too fast, lower the ball; if too / slow, raise it." printed on label.

- Object History
- The donor was a janitor working for the Burnaby School Board durring most of his career. The clock was donated is from the Riverway East School. This school was built in 1906 and torn down after the Second World War, ca 1948, and replaced with a new school called Glenwood.
- Riverway East School was very similar to the Seaforth School now located at the Burnaby Village Museum.
